It's time for the rebuild!
My bike has 25,000 mi. and using a little oil.
So I decided to rebuild it myself.
This is the first time I've rebuilt a Hayabusa engine and it's the first time in a long time that I rebuilt an engine period!
But I feel pretty comfortable with my mechanic skills. I've read the shop manual and Tech's turbo install instructions a billion times.
So I dig in.
Now there was now way I was going to tear this bike down, fix the oil problem and go back stock. I knew that since the first time I noticed it using oil.
I decided to go with a Ghetto Stage 1 Turbo, .08 base spacer, HD valve springs, ape adj. cam gears, pro mod studs and super HD clutch springs.
First thing I did was to put a Tial BOV on the plentum as it did not come with one.
Then, when I got all of my parts in, I tore the bike down.
So this is where I stopped for tonight.
What is good to use to clean up the pistons and the head? ...red scotch brite and degreaser???
-
I just put the adj. cam sprockets on. That was easier than what I thought. :thumb:
-
Where did you get your BOV with weld-on adapter? I need one.
-
lookin good so far Coryonbusa!!!

Where did you get your BOV with weld-on adapter? I need one.
I got it from Richard at www.rccturbos.com. He's a good guy!
-
Got a lot of work done this weekend.
Got the pistons cleaned up and new rings installed.
Here's a side by side comparo of stock head bolt and the pro mod studs.
Then the hardest part was putting the cylinder on. But I got it.
Here is my cylinder head work bench! My wife had no problems with it! Merry Christmas!
Here's a side by side comparo of stock valve springs (on right) and APE HD valve springs (on left).
I didn't read the note inside one of the springs until I had all of the intake valves in that said the springs only go in on way.
Sooo,I took all the intake valves back out to check to see if I put them in right and I had put 2 in wrong. Love instructions!!!!
Here's the head assembly all cleaned up and ready to re-install.
It's amazing what a little wire brush and a lot of patience can do!
So here it is when I stopped for the night.
I pick up my cams from the machine shop tomorrow, had the hubs weld on, and begin timing the cams to 105/105.
For not having built and engine in 15 years, I don't think I'm doing too bad!
-
Looks like you made some progress there Cory- :thumb:
Sent ya a PM call me tom eve after 7/8pm if you have a chance.

Will be starting my rebuild after the first of the year, after buying another home and moving for the 2rd time in 8 months. :thumb:
Right now I am looking at a badass Victorian, 4030 sq ft. on 1/2 a city block.

It's time for some maintenance and it's time to turn it up! :trb:
Gonna replace the plentium boots, fuel lines, fuel filter, and the oil return hose.
Do the ZX-Alan fuel pump mod.
Install water injection.
Crank it up from 6# to 10 #!
And try to fabricate some sort of catch can for the oil breather.

Schweet- good improvising :thumb:
I need to replace my boots too... Did you use Rad hose or?
I am gonna cut up a rad hose myself not running 60psi of boost so it should be fine...
8)
-
It's fuel line (filler neck hose) from Napa. They cut it for me too. Just need to even them up and clean them up. :thumb:
-
You're gonna shit your pants when you ride that thing with a 10lbs spring up from the 6lbs......Its gonna spool so much harder and more violent you will be shocked.....its MUCH better....make sure you get you a good map in there... :thumb:
Oh and straight C16 for top end runs.... TRUST ME....

Today I installed the Aquamist system, check the video below!
I added a dummy light to tell me when it's on but because Aquamist engineers are backwards, the light goes off when the mist is on.
(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p25/coryondrums/th_aquamistSetup.jpg) (http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p25/coryondrums/?action=view¤t=aquamistSetup.flv)
Changed out wastegate springs from the red to the yellow.
And safety wired the oil drain plug and filter. I couldn't get a good shot of the plug.
-
You're gonna love riding it on 10lbs.....water should help it live on pump gas....just make sure you're not getting any creep. Keep it fat also..
-
Cory,
Is your Water tank vented with a 1-way valve?
It has to have a vent to allow air to replace the removed water...
Or a vacuum will be created and cause the water to stop flowing from the Tank.
-
It should be like this...
-
Good idea. I dunno, I'll check it out.
Thank you! :thumb:
-
The cap has a one way vent in it and it works. :thumb:
-
Good idea. I dunno, I'll check it out.
Thank you! :thumb:
If not, a pin hole drilled in the Cap will work too. The 1-way valve keeps water in (not leaking) , yet allows air to come in to replace it.

Made the LM-1 easy to pull out.
Had to cut a hole the trunk lid.
Now I'm just waiting on J-B weld to dry.

NICE PICS :thumb:

Looks like you made some progress too! :thumb:
I rode mine today for about an hour shaking out the bugs,
was smooth ride (well actually like a freeking pogo stick on roids)
Get R finished so we can roll soon. 8)

Where does your crankcase pressure go? The crankcase needs to breath somewhere.

I like the floor coating, Heruliner. Took almost 2 gallons to cover the 7x14 floor and the gate with 2 coats.
Dried rock hard by this morning. I think it's gonna work pretty good.

I've got a Tiger Racing extended undertail, Airtech +8 tail section and some adjustable links on the way.
Still gotta get an air shifter, one of Smitha's 2 steps and a multistage clutch. Then, I'll be calling Tony for a Stage 2/MS set up.
It never ends... But I love it!
-

Man, that would be a blast! I'm moving to Georgia next month, maybe we can meet in the middle sometime!

how do you generate the AFR CHART OVER THROTTLE/RPM? just got a dl32 trying to learn my way around..
-
When your looking at the log go to "View", "New Chart", on the Horizontal Axis select "RPM", on the Vertical Axis select "Throttle", Under number of steps type in 16, under Chart Content select "A/F". Hit OK.
Now he's the long part. You want to set it up where it looks like your PC software to make tuning a breeze. To do that you'll double click on the numbers in the grey columns and rows and change their values to match the PC software values. Once you've done that, hit "File", "Save Setting as Default". You wont have to enter the values ever again. Just next time when you run a new log you'll hit "View", "New Chart" then instead of hitting OK you'll hit "Default Setting" Easy peasey.
The only other thing that I do once I'm viewing the chart is hit "Colors", check "Color by average value", then go back to "Color" and select "Wobniar". Move the sliders on the left to 15.00 and 10.00. That will show the rich areas in red and the lean areas in blue like on my chart above!
-
got ya! thanks :thumb:
-
that looks confusing as hell!!,the tuning that is

Nah... PM'd ya.

Good luck with the motor. I hope that all it is is the OP shaft.
A trip to deals gap would be nice, not at 68" though! Maybe I'll have added a new busa to my collection by then???
We'll see.

 Yes, I am addicted to SH.org. And because of that, I learn new ways to spend money on my bike daily!
-
I know what you mean. I know I wouldn't have been where I am at with my bike without sh.org. You can find any info you need here and you have some of the best busa mechanics here that are more then willing to let you know what works or doesn't. So when you making the move?I wanna see that thing run!

Good job on the trailer!!
Everything's looking NICE!
Moving to GA. Your plate says TX. That's a ways to go.
If you stop over somewhere, lock it up like Ft. Knox :thumb:

Here's an update.
In the past month I've installed a DL-32/LC-1/XD-16, BoostbySmith 2-Step, the taillight bracket in the Airtech tail, painted the tail section, added a straight link, raised the front about an inch and set my preload in the rear.

Oh yeah, the straight link stiffened it up and lowered it quite a bit.
No, you're ahead of me with the strage 2 for sure. I'm just running out of money now!
Still got to get an airshifter and a Multistage clutch. Then, I'll be content. For a while...

No doubt.
What sux is that my grandfather/inlaw leases it all out to cotton growers. :( No room to ride.
Maybe once their gone, (I'm not praying any bad will on my inlaws...) I can build a MX track!!!
-
it's still nice you wontr piss of the neighbors when you mess with your busa,my neighbors hate my ass

Sweet! Are you still coming out to Albany tomorrow?
-
I am going to try and make it but it'll depend on work. If I do go I will probably just go to watch. The more I think about racing a stock 600 the dumber it sounds.. I do want to see your bike run!
-
A stock 600 would be easy! Just pin it!
I'd like to talk more about the building. I'll get the actual diminsions of the slab so maybe we can get the ball rollin. :thumb:
-
I sent you pm
-
let us know how you did at the track :thumb:
-
Not so hot. I only made 1 pass. I didn't feel that comfortable there. A lot of bikes were not getting traction and there was a nasty rubber build up at the line. I just babied it and didn't bother picking up my time slip. Oh, and the time display lights were not working either.
Oh well, get 'em next time. :thumb:

It's taking some getting used to. But it's nice to have the space.
-
It's got:
Yellow Box
PCIIIr
BBS 2-step
Innovate DL-32
Cycle-Tech Kill Box
Water Injection w/tank
SAE shift kit w/pump
I think I'm gonna have to build a shelf for a secondary controller, if I ever get one. :D

Can't beat Tony's secondary set up. Just a smarter way to go. He's got me talked into a stand alone. Just don't want to wait until March to get it.
I think you'll be getting a couple sets of forks to shorten soon too. :thumb:

Cory do you know how many inches you gain from that pan? inch and a half? I have to get me one
-
It's go to be close to 2" by time you figure where the plug and the shield are...
I though you had a 2" pan already???
-
nope when they built the motor RPM was out of pans and I didnt want to wait any longer for my motor. I know if I do end up shortening the forks like I think I am I will need a pan
-
OHHH YEEAAH, you're gonna need a pan. :D
-
On your new pan it doenst have a drain plug anywhere? you have to drop the pan to drain the oil?
-
It uses the factory plug and it's in the very front of the pan. :thumb:
-
Damn Cory, I didn't know you dumped your ride....>Glad you didn't get hurt. Bodywork looks GOOD..... If you were still in Dallas, I would get you to do mine and I would drive it up there and drop it off.... :D
-
any more progress?
-
What's the latest bro?
-
After I installed the oil pan, I rode it around for couple of hours to make sure everything is OK. Got back home, removed the plenum and sent it off to Tony for a secondary upgrade.
I went wiring crazy on Saturday. Removed every aftermarket box and wire from the bike.
Relocating the Water inj., Kill box and the 2-step to the ram air tubes. Removed the PCIIIr and the yellow box.
Gonna get one of these and rewire everything.
Also got the AMS 1000 all plumed. Put a weakened small yellow spring in the gate (~4#). Gonna wire it up and mount it when my fuse block comes in. I also did a bunch of porting to the waste gate pipes. Should hold psi a little better now.

Nice work Cory....... Funny after a couple years of adding electronics to a bike how fucked up the wiring can get. I recently redid 8yrs of wiring "mods" on my turd. It was nice to clean up all that old shit, solder and shrink wrap everything.... I couldn't believe how shoddy some of my wiring was in the early days....(circa 2000) :grn:
You going to Megasquirt?
-
Thanks! Yep, doing the MS. :thumb:
Can't wait to get it back together. Should have everything back from Tony by next weekend.
-
Water injection mounted in left ram air tube.
Boost by Smith 2-step, Cycle-tech kill box, AMS 1000 seleniods and regulator mounted, wired and plummed.

any word from Tony on the secondaries?
you cant even see the ram air tube anymore :D

Way to go crayon... looking good man.

coming off the wastegate is that your regulator?
-
have you started to rewire it yet? post some pics if you got some
-
coming off the wastegate is that your regulator?
That's the map sensor for the AMS. I need to angle it in a little more so the fairing will clear it. It's supposed to be as close to the gate as possible.
-
have you started to rewire it yet? post some pics if you got some
I've started cleaning up some of the wiring. Still waiting on the fuse block, though. Nothing looks "neat" yet.
-
Clean slate! :D
(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p25/coryondrums/IMG_8701.jpg)
Replumed the AMS map.
Built some brackets, mounted and wired up the AMS.
-
Got my accessory wiring harness in and wired up everything in the front of the bike.
AMS 1000 & soleniods
Water injection
Kill box
2 step
XD-16
2nd fan
Needless to say, I'm sick of wiring at the moment!

-
I know you dieing for the plenum to arrive :D
Yes, I am!!! :D
I bought a lil gauge for the the reg. :thumb:
Or I might put it on the stock fuel rail??? Haven't decided yet...
-
Looking good Cory!!
That looks like a gawt damn drag bike right thurrrr.... :thumb: 8)
You gonna still street ride?
Now with secondaries, you can ream that little ghetto kit out and see what the little bastard will make ballz out.....I always wondered what they would max out at but never had enough fuel for it. That and I had stock rods back then....
-
Thanks! :thumb:
I think it'll be a while before I out grow this turbo on the track. Still running stock rods too. (fingers crossed)
It's still set up to ride on the street, though, I don't get to as often as I would like...
Looking forward to playing with different boost levels on the street too. If you look to the lower left of the XD-16, I installed a button to cycle thru the boost stages while riding on the street. Should be fun!
-
Gave the lowers the "low" cut today. And cut the holes for the new dump and air cleaner too. I have to say, I like this better.

I will this weekend. Fucking time change! Can't do nothing when I get home!!!
I think it's sitting at the same height it was, when it was strapped, before, just now, no strap. :thumb:
-
no clearance issues ??
-
no clearance issues ??
The lower vee, which I didn't cut BTW, is the lowest part of the bike, sitting a 3 1/2" from the ground with me off of the bike. The oil pan is about 4".
And from the top of the fender to the bottom of the nose I can put my hand in up to my wrist. (take that out of context! :D)
So I've got some room to go lower, if needed.
-
It's coming together nicely Cory! It's gonna look pretty sick and haul ass too!!!! :woot:

Pulls all the way to 10.5K and starts to break up. DaveO must have only extended 6th gear in the ECM???

Here's an update.
In the past month I've installed a DL-32/LC-1/XD-16, BoostbySmith 2-Step, the taillight bracket in the Airtech tail, painted the tail section, added a straight link, raised the front about an inch and set my preload in the rear.

BTW, we have TONS of car dealers(paint and body shops-isn't that what you do?), tons of local clubs that your band could rock out at etc..... lots of work here.....Petro-chemical is everywhere. Lots of strip clubs that need bouncers to... 8).
I know our economy down here is ok.....not great, but decent....it is getting worse but so if everywhere else.
Just think, if you came down here, you could join TFA....(Team Fat Ass), and be associated with all the big studs.....(Entropy, Me ofcourse, Sleeperbusa, Tricktom, Speedninja, EZ, Trooper Mark, SSVince) we're the local chapter of TFA.....pretty much all bad asses... :thumb: :D
Best of luck bro....you gotta get out of hick ass Georgia before your brain just stops working suddenly... :grn:

That's all of the parts I need. Still need to:
Complete the engine disassembly,
Send the tranny off to get cut,
Weld up the exhaust header crack,
Clean up and coat the turbo and header,
Send off the sing arm to get the top box removed,
and clean up some misc wiring.
Still a lot of work ahead, just need to get busy now. :D

Looking good Cory :thumb:
The new rider also :thumb:
Great weight advantage :D
Good luck guys !!!

First let me say that this is a great looking bike, and it seems that alot of nice stuff is on this bike.
I was going over your build and saw a few things I wanted to give you some advise on and I had a few questions also. I noticed that you tap screwed the fitting for you Aquamist system and then JB welded it...I would recommend against it, as I purchased my Ghetto Kit and it came with someone else's work that was identical to the mod you did and I' m wondering if it was suggested to you by the same member that sold me the kit I now have. They JB welded the aqaumist strap with screws exactly the same way you did, and also JB welded a 5th injector mod to boot. When I did a leak down test of the plenum and up pipe I learned that the JB welds were leaking pressure, which is sort of working against a good turbo system. I stripped all the JB and had them profesionaly welded up...its a much better and leak free set up.
As for the breather catch can that you fabbed I am curious...is this something has to be done when running a certain boost or was this mod done for a specific reason??? I only ask because I simply put a breather filter on mine and I am wondering if this will be enough or do I need to do something else???
-
love the new title :hys:
I know exactly what you mean

Thanks!
The nipple on the side was temporary and kind of a joke too. I used 3M Panel bond. Waay more stronger than JB weld!
It has since been removed, tapped and the proper fitting screwed in. If you can see it in this pic...
The breather catch can (bottle) is temporary too. It's something you have to have to race some venues and classes.
I plan on getting an aluminum tank at some point and mounting it in the subframe. Just haven't done it yet. The breather works fine as long as where you run doesn't require a catch tank. :thumb:

Shelling it out! :thumb:

Lookn great Cory.
Boost is like crack. Sometimes I think it costs more too!

DO NOT MOUNT IT IN THE SUBFRAME!!!
It will get warm and then Cool, collecting Condensation which will Drain back into your Crankcase... a lot of it too. :x
Ask me how I know...

He's young and doesn't know that way back in '03, we didn't have fancy high beam flashers! Our drag strips went up hill both ways! Didn't have but one good tire and we all shared it AND WE WERE THANKFULL!

Something messed up with the track timing on this run so I dont know what this run is but the run before was the 5.94.
