I would not go 2 teeth down in the front, start with a 17 tooth and if you need more go up in the rear.

I am sure you found this out already but the front sproket is diff on the 08 than the 07's and older.  They have been out on the market now for maybe a month if that.. I have a 17 on my 08 now and it is off the chain!!!

Yea I know its different from the old busa.
I got mine from Chuck at streen n track man what a great guy to deal with.  One of the best.
No one else had one but he got me one in two days talking about fast service.  Anyone looking for great service and speed call Chuck.

Puts the chain more in a bind and is more stress on the output shaft

I put a 16 on my gen 1 busa and bent all the pins in my chain.

Nothing wrong with running a 16tooth. It's easier on the clutch AND the output shaft. However, if you are at stock length, It's gonna wheelie ALOT easier. As far as the chain goes, it will depend on your ride height. If you have it so low that when you sit on it the swing arm is parrell to the ground, then when you're on the gas hard it will be travelling past parrell and when this happens the chain will be cutting into the chain buffer (the grooved rubber piece on the front of the swingarm) and eventually cut into the swingarm itself which will damage the chain and over time the swingarm.

your right a 16 tooth would have been beeter than a 17 tooth the bike is not as strong a 1397 and people run 16's on there 1397 all the time.
