Bust out those knee dragging (or close) pictures! Contrary to popular belief, Hayabusa's are not just for straight lines! Track days, Canyons, Mountains, something that turns left or right.... :P

Awesome pictures!!
Fyi, Pahrump is my favorite track. But if you ever want to ride there again, plan on doing it this fall. Rumor is, bikes won't be back for the '09 season. Only cages.

No prob. I enjoy the road racing more than drag racing. It's just a lot cheaper to drag race.

The expense is not what bothers me, but more so the fact that the better you get, the more expensive it gets. Then again, I suppose the same could be said about drag racing.
I used to be all about drag racing until I went to the AMA Superbike races at Barbers. That ruined me. Been itching to get on a track since.

Gotta just love the Bittersweet annoyance of the contact patch! Got one myself.

Do you guys know of any tracks in New York? I'm in western NY and would consider traveling a little ways but certainly not to california. I can't seem to find any tracks that have like rookie or amatuer nights.

You're about to get one.

Also, check out Barber and VIR. Would be a drive, but both absolutely top notch tracks.

$125,000 to join? No thanks. Did I read that correctly? So you can't just plan a day to go ride there, you actually have to be an elite member of society and shell out $125,000 to hang out with Jerry fuckin Seinfeld? Where is Barber and VIR?
-
Yeah! Lol, it does suck! It's being made for elite track day goers.
But, you don't have to worry about that. What you can do, is HOPE that some company will come in and rent the track, and you pay them $150-250 a day for a track day. That's what all tracks do. There are tons of them out there!
Go to Borders or some book store, and pick up RoadRacingWorld Magazine. In the back, is the list of all the track day organizers, where, and when they are having events. You can try and see if you can find one nearby. While you're at it, mention the track above and see if they can solicite the track to rent, and do a track day there.
Barber is in Alabama, FAR away. But it's considered one of the finest tracks in America. Let alone, just going for the museum! Click on the link, then click on the Museum.
http://www.barbermotorsports.com/
For Barber Museum ( http://www.barbermuseum.org/ ) <------MUST SEE!!
VIR is in Virginia, a lot closer. Also a fine track.

You can also go to Summit Point in West Virginia. It might be closer since you are in western NY

Very Cool. Thanks a lot man. I appreciate the help. Where do you ride?
I'm in San Diego. So the places I frequent most are Willow Springs and Fontana in California, and Pahrump in Nevada. I'm still dying to do Laguna Seca but you need a quiet exhaust (or stock) in order to do that due to noise regulations. Still need to hit up Button Willow, Sears Point and Infineon Raceway in California.
-
Gateway International Raceway right across the river from St. Louis, MO. This was my first ever track experience. It was the coolest thing I've ever done in my life.

VERY SWEEET!!! WISH I HAD THE TIME TO GO. :(
-
Lol! Chris I'm trying to lean it over, but what's funny is, in that pic, I'm got 5 guys behind me that I'm showing the line too on the track (I'm a control rider/corner worker for SoCalTrackDays at Spring Mtn Raceway in Pahrump NV). Came around the corner and saw the camera guy, and just threw up a '#1' finger!!
And Vince is accusing me of NOT drag racing much anymore. Haven't been out for a while, but we're heading to Fontana on Saturday to try it out. I have absolutely no idea what to expect, where I'm going, or what class I'll be thrown into.
NDVBusa, trust me, track days are addicting no matter what bike you ride.
-
you know me, im just bustin ya a little bit. see you guys saturday
-
You still got your Taco, right?
Look for the white Dodge van, Astro van, and I'll be in a black Cherokee.
-
yea still got the taco, and white enclosed trailer. should we bring the gloves and a ring for brian and vince?
-
Lol, no, they both like to take it to the strip and settle it there.

This was my first track day in September '08 at LVMS. I was on my '04, which is set up to drag race (notice how low it is), but I had a damn good time anyhow. I'd like to get a 600 for a dedicated track bike.

Dude, I corner work for Pahrump! SoCalTrackDays has been my 'home' for a couple of years. We got one more in May before summer break, then 2 more afterwords, while opening up Chuckwalla in Palm Desert this Fall.
If you go to either, let me know!

I've been to 4 or 5 SoCalTrackdays. If you've seen the 05 LE out there, that was me.

I'm trying to remember if I saw your bike. I do remember a number Busa's out there, but I never had a chance to come up and say hi. I'll do that.
I was supposed to be there last weekend, but had to substitute a back up. But I was there in March, with the Duc. Kept the bike over in the main SoCalTrackDay tent along with Mickey's 1000 and Cliff's R6 (owners of SCTD's).
But I'll be out there in May for sure.

A bunch of the guys from h.org were out there last April and I showed up with them. That's the only other time I've seen other Busas at the Pahrump track. Not to say they weren't there, just not when I was.

Hi guys, I was on the Brno Circuit with GH-Moto agency. Three hours of open pitlane riding was pretty cool. My best time was about 2:54 which is too slow, but it was great experience. There are many things to improve on my ride, for example breaking point, visual skills and body position, but it gave me great lesson which can't be taken on road. There was professional photographer, so the pictures look really great and I'm looking forward for the full size photos. Hope you enjoy it.

Btw. I did use the Bridgestone Battlax BT-023 sport-touring tyres and they performed really great even with worn-out front tyre on the marks which already ran almost 15000 km. 8)

It's good to see you out on Brno tearing it up! :tu: This is you?

Hi, of course I know SLUGI, actually, we are the best friends. :thumb: And you're right, starting number 102 is mine. I was the only one crazy man, who tries to compete with light and often race modified bikes with completely stock K7 Hayabusa. Masaryk circuit at Brno is great track and I really love it. Most bikes braked me out, because I tried to ride carefully and it's not easy for me such a heave bike flick into the turn as quickly as needed. But there were some who saw my back. Especially on exits could my Busa show her muscles and I feeled that tyres hold much more gas than I actually had. Below are pictures how they look after the event.
Here are some other photos:

Looks snotty
Try running a 190 or better 180 on rear. Also EBC 'HH' pads with steel braided lines should help. All in all, mate. :tu:

I'm using the size recommended by the manufacturer, which means 120/70 on front and 190/50 on rear. Both BT-023 sport-touring and the bike is very agile and really likes twisties.
Braking pads are now from Carbone Lorraine sintered metal and they're bit better than the original one from Tokico. Some people recommended me softer pads to improve the braking power. My bike is now four years old so the original braking hoses needs to be replaced and I want to use the steel armoured ones to prevent fading.
The problem is on my side, because I have still bad sense for speed and weight. Simply applying brakes too hard and too early. I'm quite small and haven't enough strength which is needed for that kind of bike. I also have to improve my visual skills, because sometimes I do many steering corrections which is mistake. Also my body position is not optimal, because most of the time I use my Hayabusa for long distance touring and that doesn't teach you the right things for harder and faster ride. Of course long journey doesn't mean I ride only in a straight line, I really love winding roads with twisties, but I have to ride much more carefull because of other traffic. Brno is great circuit, but also expensive and there is no other possibility where to learn to use all of Hayabusa potencial.
I'm studying the video and also book from Keith Code, probably you'll know Twist of the wrist II. which is totally outstanding and helps me a lot to improve my riding. :tu:
-
I have in my "library room" "Twist of the Wrist" by Mr. Code. It has been very helpful over the years. Counter steering is critical. Also, you must pick your line and keep the bike marginally accelerating all the way thru the turn. I was amazed. It all works.

As you wrote, Keith Code is real professional and his work is really great. His superbike school is the university of bike riding and the best from the best riders of the world comes to him for advice. He developed also training program for the US Armed forces because motorbikes are still wide used by soldiers.
You're right, counter steering it's the main secret. I ride fourth season and know that rule, but it's not easy to use it always in the real world, because the body is used to initiate the turn instead the arms on the bars. Picking up the right line is about visual skills and I know that there's much to improve. The acceleration is needed for the proper weight distribution, especially with the full fuel tank. :tu:
-
I had to bring out the back up bike to teach a class and do a little control Riding. The Clutch cover wasn't helping my confidence that day. At least I was only in charge of the newbies.

The busas has only been on track 3 times, it's not my first choice. But I had a minor argument with my 1k and it won.
So, In haste I picked up another 08 1k, and then got a 636 for a track toy.
The faces of people when I roll out onto hot pit with the busa are priceless. It's kinda fun, but a lot of work,
Prior to that, my favorite picture pre-argument of the 1k

That is friggin' insane. More power to ya!!!! Awesome. :tu: :bike:
-
The Busa is actually pretty fun to ride on a road course. I made it more fun by upgrading to Ohlins suspension and Nissin Radial brakes from a ZX14R.....as well as Slicks of course. The bike is a hoot to ride with only 160hp, bike lightened up to 490lbs w/1 gallon of fuel and +6 rear sprocket.

Watching the on-bike video that Stu shot from his YZF and uploaded of you guys. You, Jeff, Gregg, Pranav, etc.
Was that Kim's red SV that "WitsBusa" was riding in the opening of the video?
Looks wierd to see rear view mirrors on the track.
Trying to get it to load past 13:23...
-
Yep.
Was Banditmans - he delivered that out to our trackday there in 05 for 6 who turned it into a semi-enduro for some time then gar got it and put it back to stock. I think it had over 200k on it when 6 got it.
-
...finally got to watch the rest of it.
It was nice to see Dino and Fulltilt also.
I must say, that was cool. I miss those guys. :bike:
Looks like Jeff's 1000 had a bunch of people riding it. :)
My spy, VTSG (Vorton The Space God), who was there in disguise, told me that Stu was giving guys tows also. Looked like Snail needed one- I mean WTF, did he get lost and was stopping to ask for directions, or was he just taking a lunch break, parking in the middle of the track like that.

I think I remember helping with an electrical problem on that bike on Fox Hill at Laguna Seca back when it was nearly new. :bike:
We MAY have been sober. Think monkeys + football.

Snail had some great lean (I thought) but it was his first track day and he is like a million years old - I think he did great and he said he had more fun than anyone else did. Having said that - I'm sure he's fast as hell on his home roads. Dunno if he had more fun than I did though - I ran every session and only came in early on the last one cuz the sun was blinding my ass coming into 2 and then again around 8 8)
Stu is awesome - just kills it on that track. He was on a bone stock R6 and would pretty much just disappear whenever he felt like it.
Vortons celebrity appearance was merely icing on the cake - that was an awesome weekend.
I want to get back out there again in March.
Once I get the CuNT mapped and hopefully running properly (next weekend), I can look into doing a coupla upgrades that I feel will help on the track.
I really just need some experience - bottom line.
-
Is your pipe a Big Bird?
Tell me about the rest of your set-up (tires, suspension, brakes). :)
-
Um yes, yes it is - unfortunately :td:
Pretty sure yer jokin but here goes...
The CuNT - 12.5:1 1397, 06 Forks with Racetech 1.1 springs and 10W oil, newer/low mileage stock shock (for now, I have a newer G1K shock that I'm going to put a heavier spring on), braided lines and recent HH front pads, Bridgestone 022 tires (I think) and I haven't messed with the damper (yet).
I had only ridden this bike about 300 miles before taking it on the track so my comfort level with the bike was not real high. This bike wants to kill me so I was not tryin to push ANY limits that day but had a great time getting to know the bike and the track.
Assuming the bikes driveability issues are resolved with the correct map (like I think it will) then I'd like to upgrade the front rotors and damper after I replace the shock - sucks bein on a budget.
I'm on a 1 bike budget so I'll do the best I can with what I've got - wasn't as bad on the track as I though it would be but I'm sure another liter bike would show me the error of my ways pretty quick on that matter.

Like so many other jobs, The Hayabusa is wonderful as a track day bike.
I'm sorry it's trying to kill you. I'm sure that once you've sorted out the mapping of those small throttle openings, it won't try to kill you anymore.
Good job on the fork and brake upgrades so far.
If you have not already pulled the counter-balancer, I would do so immediately, or at least the next time you have the pipe off. It's easy.
Save your money on the rotors- with today's brake pads, you can get really good performance with stock stainless rotors. I don't know which HH pads you're using, but if they are the regular "FA" EBC part number prefix and you still want more performance, try the "GFA" kit race pads. You can even step up to the "EPFA" or even the "GPFA" HH pads, although EBC expresses concernc about using their most powerful pads (GPFA) on the street, simply because of their power.
Forget the steering damper- a worn-out 13 year old steering damper is perfect for a Hayabusa on the track.
You might mean the Bridgestone BT-002 or BT-002 Racing Street tires. What sizes are you using?
-
I had replied to your HMF inquiry on the Second Gen Board here - I think you called them after you read my response.
I believe the coutnerbalancer was removed when the engine was built. I don't know this as fact because the shop that built it is gone and Walter can't remember too much about a motor that was built by one of his guys over 4 years ago - my seat of the oants feel is that it's not there.
I don't rememeber which HH compound they are, I just know they were 1000x better than what was on the bike when i got it.
I'll look into different tires when these wear out.
-
Fixed my typo above. Doh.

Ah...thanks, buddy. :tu:

Wouldn't surprise me. You're probably right. That's a reasonable modification to make when building an engine. It only takes a few minutes to drop the pan and take a look the next time you have the exhaust off.

Most likely the regular FA-prefix pads. They are by far the most common, and unless you specifically sought out the other pads, you would probably never see them. You're right, they are 1000 times better than the stock pads.
If your bike still has the 6-pot Tokico calipers, the correct part numbers are going to be FA188HH for the pads you most likely have, or if you want to upgrade from there, it would be GFA188HH, EPFA188HH, and GPFA188HH, in order of braking power. I did fine with the stock brake master cylinder like you have. Fresh, well-bled, high temperature brake fluid (I used Motul 600F degree DOT 5.1 synthetic) is also important- the Hayabusa is a heavy bike, and can put a lot of heat into the brake fluid. Bleed it well, and bleed it often. :tu:
I'll look into different tires when these wear out.
I don't know, man- if you like those tires, they may work for you. I've never used them, but I think they're good tires. :bike:
What tire sizes are you currently using?
-
Tires are what came on it when I got it - they were almost new and I think did very well at the track for a more street/tour oriented tire. Reality is that my skill level is nowhere near finding the limits of traction on tires ( that isn't induced by excessive throttle).
Right now just the 190/50 but I'm looking to try the 190/55 and maybe some links to raise the rear. I do like to do some top end runs every now and then so I'll prolly just try the 190/55 before the links. Even that's kind of a dumb statement as 98% of my riding is street and most of that is commuting really.
-
I saw a simple pair of aluminum fixed 1" raising links on e-bay recently for like $17. Probably the most cost-effective improvement you could make in your bike at this point, and they're easy to intall.
You'll like the 190/55. A lot. When it's time, if you'd like help picking a tire, I'd be happy to help.
Don't forget to re-aim your headlight after doing either or both of those. The stock Hayabusa headlight actually works pretty good, but Suzuki delivers them with the headlight pointed in the dirt.
...and your riding looked just fine. I wish I could have been there. Thanks again for sharing the video. :)
-
I would love to ride that track.......looks really fast which I love to do on some mountain roads we have out here but helluva lot safer...
-
I don't have the exact stats on Big Willow, but I can think of two other tracks, both on the west coast, that should be significantly faster.
Here are little 750 and 1000 cc bikes at PIR, with top speeds of about 175 mph for the faster bikes:
http://www.youtube.com/v/iOEAb1OlLoM?version=3&hl=en_US
The other track that I'm thinking of is Spokane, which has has gone through a couple of owners, is NOT near a trauma center, and has had some safety issues with run-off in the past. The new owners appear to be running a new somewhat shorter front straightaway, but in the past, they have had a spectacularly long front straight. If memory serves, it was a mile long. When Rad Greaves unsuccessfully attempted to break the 200 mph barrier in competition, I was going to try to beat him to the punch, by using Spokane Raceway Park (as it was known then). In the end, neither one of us did it. Aerial photographs show that the pavement is still there- I just don't know if there's going to be any way to use the old configuration.
-
HPR in Colorado has a long straight that is about 3/4 mile......
-

The info I found on High Plains Raceway said that in the longest configuration (the 2.54 mile version), the longest straight is the 2200 foot long back straight (about half as long as the front straight at PIR).
Am I looking at the wrong track? :?

Where did you get the radial adapters for the old Ohlins RT fork ? I have a fork like that but only with "std" brakes on one of my track bikes.
-
I got it from a seller on Ebay who is located in Japan. I was enquiring about something and mentioned these and he said he had he thought he had some. So a few days later tells me he has some so I got them for a decent price. They are hard to locate as some companies were making them but quit after awhile plus for the more common 108mm spacing it's harder. There are some made by Cycle Cat that has them for the 100mm spacing common in the Brembo calipers.

I have seen several different ones but Yours are the nicest one I have seen.
I just have t keep on looking .:)

I got lucky cause I was looking hardcore for like 2 weeks and even found a guy who could make them but they were pretty plain and expensive
