Title: Got-Busa? 2008 Project bike....
Post by: Got-Busa? on December 23, 2008, 08:30:17 PM
I've posted about my build on a few sites but figured I would start an information thread here that anyone can view/follow.

I haven't decide which route I'm going to take the bike (N/A, Turbo, Supercharger, NOS, etc.) just yet but will update this thread periodically as I go.

Phase-I: Right now I'm looking to go 200mph in 1-mile on a stock motor Gen-II BUSA and document ALL of the mods required to get there from OEM factory BONESTOCK.

I'm 6' 2" and 220lbs. at this stage in my life so it may take a few more modifications than on previous bikes I've owned...

On with the bike....
My wonderful wife decided to buy me one of the new Gen-II BUSA's for Christmas 2007!  She put a deposit down in September without even telling me.  THANK YOU again Sara...  :D

The beginning, picking the bike up from Honda East in Toledo, OH and paid $10,500.50 (Out The Door).....

THANK YOU to my Dad for helping me get ready and attend the first Texas Mile race....

Prepping for the TEXAS MILE and how to pass tech!

Safety wiring is VERY easy as long as you do it "correctly". The key is to take your time and do it right the first time. You need to drill at the correct speed of the bit. It doesn't do any good to run the drill as fast as possible if the bit isn't designed to cut that fast. Drill it nice and slow with varying pressure AND most importantly a few drops of oil every couple of seconds. If the bolt and bit get to hot it will just frustrate you because it won't cut and you'll start snapping bits. Take your time and cut it slowly and it will go through like butter. It took us about 35-minutes to do all the bolts once we figured this out.

How the safety wire needs to look on the front forks and pinch bolts....

I drilled the rear axle on the 08 but now have to find a castle nut....

Oil cap....

Oil plug....

Oil filter (K&N comes pre-drilled for safety wire)....

Also a THANK YOU to Guy at Tiger Racing. He sent me a free metal chain guard when I was deployed over seas. It fit perfectly, looks great on the bike, and most importantly is safer than the cheap OEM plastic guard. I had it powder coated Black to match the bike...

*PICS of the Tiger Racing Chain Guard, THANK YOU GUY!*

What's great is that it looks OEM but extends front and back to protect your bike.  The stock plastic piece won't do much at 180+ if you have a problem...

....and that's pretty much it for tech and safety on the bike.

What you'll get if done correctly....

These were the only changes to the bike before the Texas Mile (cosmetic only) and no performance was gained from any of this.

OEM rear-sets removed and Powder Coated Black to match the frame...

Removed the factory MUD-FLAP to clean up the tail of the bike a little.  A FREE mod, I used the factory reflector mounts that came on the bike to mount the plate...

Added Black/Gold Pazzo Racing Levers from Pashnit!

I also added mirror block off plates from my 2003 BLACK SE BUSA to clean up the front.  You are required to remove the OEM mirrors for Land Speed Racing, so I figured it was a good time to install them...

I also added my Garmin eTrex GPS to the bike (with home made mount) so I could log and verify my speeds over the ridiculously high speedo readings...

Some people were wondering how I defeated the factory 186mph restriction....

I utilized the GPS sensor mod done by Greq at Boost-by-Smith....

Time to get out to an LSR event and see what she'll do 100% BONE STOCK unrestricted!

These runs were made at the October 25 & 26th, 2008 TEXAS MILE event....

More info about the TEXAS MILE event can be found here---> http://www.texasmile.net/

I wasn't expecting much because it was my first time out and I didn't want to be disappointed. I was thinking 170-ish first time out BUT really didn't know what I'd run being 6' 2" 225lbs. (at the time) without gear.

THANK YOU DAD for the help and pics...  :thumb:

Ahhh.....the fastest stock color gleaming off the sun... (sorry had to add that in here)..

Getting ready to head out for MY first pass...

My VERY FIRST run I couldn't have been happier and I was pretty shocked really....

What the GPS read...

It felt good to make my goal on the very first pass but like anyone else, I now wanted to go even faster....

After my first pass of 179mph, I took off the factory seat and tried a few other things. The bike felt a little better with the lower seat but I accidentally double shifted 6th on my second pass which slowed me to 177mph.

By then I had received some help from a few people and decided to go ahead and lower the bike and remove the stock mufflers to save weight. I went ahead and dropped the bike 2"s with Brock's Performance lowering kit....

Found here---> http://prostores2.carrierzone.com/servlet/brockracing/-strse-1363/2008-Hayabusa-Drag-Race/Detail

....and removed the 30lbs. of factory exhaust canisters. It sounded like I had a race bike then even though it was completely stock performance wise...  :)

Third pass was later in the day and wind had picked up. It felt good and rock steady the entire run being lowered but I could feel the wind up top. The last run of the day on Saturday had me pulling 178mph...

Sunday, started out beautiful and the weather couldn't have been more perfect.
First pass off the truck had me running my fastest time of the weekend on a completely STOCK 2008 Hayabusa....

"ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY TWO POINT TWO SIX FIVE MILES PER HOUR!"

I tried a few things after that but just couldn't get it going any quicker. The wind had also picked up a bit so I knew I probably wouldn't go any quicker. Not to mention my family and I were all very tired and had a 3+ hour drive home to work early Monday morning...

It's hard to describe but in drag racing you punch it for a 1/4-mile and then shut down. In one mile you are just getting started at that point, shift into the next gear head down and keep running her out for all she's got as you slowly pass the markers 1/2.....shifting into 6th gear.....3/4.....still holding her wide open as the needle has been pegged for some time only watching the tachometer now.....and then finally you blast past the 1-mile board.....

Plenty of room to shut down on a stock bike. Ease off the gas, let the engine decelerate for a second and then lightly apply brakes. By then you are in the 150's and can slowly poke your head up. You still have a half mile to slow down and a 2,000 ft. overrun if you need more than that. Great track (runway) and very smooth with no problems. A few pebbles on the taxi ways but nothing major.

More pics of the Oct '08 TEXAS MILE can be found here---> http://www.suzukihayabusa.org/forum/index.php?topic=134450.0

To close out my factory stock times on the 2008 Gen-II at the Texas Mile my runs were:

First day:
1st pass- 179.314
2nd pass- 177.4
3rd pass- 178.358

Second day:
4th pass- 182.265
5th pass- 181.479
6th pass- 179.571

Now I begin my next stage of modifications....

First, I will be doing the BASIC mods that everyone does to a Hayabusa.  It will pretty much include a pipe, air/fuel tuner, air filter (to include sealing the factory air box), race gas, and a few other little things.

As winter passes, I will get a few parts ordered and installed as we approach the next Texas Mile event in March '09!

Hope to see you out at an LSR event....  8) :thumb:

Before I begin the next stage of modifications, I needed to baseline the bike.

I also wanted to baseline the bike on the same dyno I would be getting the custom tune on for comparison so a trip to Johnny Cheese was in order.

Thank you....Johnny for taking the time to dyno my bike and chatting with me about everything.

Here are the numbers 100% BONESTOCK as Suzuki delivered her out of the crate (in the same condition as she ran the Texas Mile race).  I haven't even changed the oil yet.

STD: 180.31 HP  108.6 TQ

SAE: 175.90 HP  105.61 TQ

In my opinion, it does no good to swap dyno's half way through since most dyno's are ONLY a tuning aid and really can't be compared

I'm still waiting for parts to arrive so once I get them all installed, I'll be heading back for pump gas and race gas numbers.   :thumb:

Thank you again Johnny for your time...  :beechug: :USA:

Well, it's finally time to update the thread a little bit.  I got some time this week to get things installed. :D

Even when I had my 01 and 03 BUSA's something I had always wanted to accomplish was running 200mph.  After a few military deployments and my last BUSA getting totaled, it was time to start a new project.  Since the BUSA is essentially the best platform to build on and the most aerodynamic, where else should I start but with a Gen-II.  It received most of the updates that people wanted on the Gen-I so it only made sense where to start over....

After living in Dayton OH for a few years, I got to know Brock Davidson pretty well.  After seeing what he did with his 08 at Maxton last year, I figured that round of modifications was a good place to start.  For those that don't know.....Brock, Dave, and Lee took a stock bike with some minor tweaks and were able to run over 200mph.

LINK to the story: http://www.dragbike.com/dbnews/anmviewer.asp?a=3669&z=2

As a privater, regular off the street Joe....I want to accomplish this same feat!  So grab a cold one and follow my path in search of the magic 200MPH at a 1-mile event...  :thumb:

STEP 1: Picking an aftermarket exhaust system!

I enjoyed the Gen-III Street Smart System on my 03 BUSA so when I decided to upgrade the 08, I knew exactly who to talk to....

I decided on a Black Ceramic Coated BROCK's ALIEN HEAD full system exhaust.

RETAIL PRICE is $1,065 on the system but worth every penny! (If you want it Ceramic Coated it's an extra $250)

LINK: http://prostores2.carrierzone.com/servlet/brockracing/-strse-1390/Alien-Head-Exhaust-System-dsh-GSX-dsh-R1300/Detail

There are many reasons for choosing this exhaust but before I give you my opinion, lets talk FACTS ONLY!

Using a bathroom scale, I weighed the factory exhaust system when I took it off the bike.  The full header with 2-catalytic converters AND two mufflers weighed 43LBS!!!! You didn't miss read that guys/gals, that's FORTY THREE pounds for a factory OEM exhaust...

The Brock's system with full header and everything weighed right at 8LBS!!!  For those that aren't good with math, that's a weight savings of 35LBS. coming OFF the bike.  There aren't many other things that will drop that kind of weight on a bike.  Not only does this weight savings help in straight line performance but also makes a BIG difference in the cornering department.

Now to my opinion: The other reason for choosing a Brock's system is simply they can't be beat.  If you want the best quality pipe for the money, best customer service, AND best performance from your bike.....I suggest you give him a call.

Back to FACTS....everyone wants to know what kind of a performance gain the pipe gave so hang tight for the dyno numbers...  8)

Now that you have a pipe picked out....

STEP 2: Getting some form of tuning device to ensure a proper Air/Fuel ratio!

Since the factory O2 system is NOT a true closed loop system (let alone one that can keep up), you must get an aftermarket tuning device!  There currently isn't a system on the market that will self adjust.  You must have the bike professionally tuned or at least verify the A/F tuning yourself if you are capable.  Again, the factory computer will NOT adjust to the proper A/F ratio...

I've used Power Commanders in the past so I decided to try a new system on the market.

The Bazzaz Performance Z-Fi Quickshift with optional Air Fuel Mapping...

I'll get more info up on this system after I get time to play with it.  Johnny Cheese did the tuning so he may be better at answering any direct questions that I can't answer from the tuners perspective.

The quick and ugly though is that the Bazzaz DOES control ALL 8-injectors!  From a tuning perspective you can only adjust in 500-RPM increments and NOT 250-RPM like the PC.  I'll email Bazzaz and see if they have any plans for updates or additional features.

RETAIL is: $850

*CAUTION*
When installing the Bazzaz harness be very careful with the injector plugs.  The pins inside can bend down and will NOT close the loop on the system.  If your bike doesn't turn on and fire up immediatly after installation, CHECK ALL plugs on the Bazzaz harness and ALL injectors on the bike.
*CAUTION*

I had injector 1 and 3 on the lowers bend down and the bike would not start.  Later on the dyno, I had injector 2 and 3 on the uppers not make contact also.  Check them carefully before/after you install the system.

Quickshifter:

I'll have more info on logging and using the AFM self tuning device as I get miles on the bike.  I'll also record the runs at the Texas Mile to see what the ECU and O2 sensor says.  That will also give me an opportunity to test the Quickshifter...

STEP 3: Get more AIR into the engine!

I received a PIPERCROSS RACE filter for Christmas so I figured this was as good a time as any to install it.

LINK: http://www.pipercross.net/motorcycle/applications.asp?m1=12&m2=263

I didn't get any pics of the filter but will post some OEM filter and airbox pics so you have an idea the difference.

OEM airbox, filter, and velocity stacks!

The next step to get more AIR in was to install all short velocity stacks from a GSXR-1000.

The FINAL step for AIRBOX modifications on the Gen-II BUSA is sealing the RAM-AIR tubes....

LINK: http://www.schnitzracingstore.com/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=5025795&showprevnext=1

*CAUTION*
BEFORE YOU DO THIS MOD, THINK LONG AND HARD!  This modification is NOT easy on a Gen-II BUSA.  What took about 15-minutes on a Gen-I took me OVER 4-HOURS to complete on a Gen-II.  The airbox is NOT the same and you will have a long job ahead of you.  My opinion is that it's a major PITA to complete.  It took me longer to finish than it did to take off all the fairings, remove the factory exhaust and re-install them...
*CAUTION*

For those willing to attempt...

Start by removing the OEM foam and see how much plastic MUST be removed for installation:

Grind all of the plastic off and install the seals....

It doesn't look pretty but it works...

Regardless of what your buddies say down at the local hang out NO BUSA will run 200mph 100% stock or with stock gearing (Gen-II 18/43).

In order to get the correct ratio to achieve 200mph, I installed a 41-tooth rear sprocket.  Based on factory gearing of 18/43 which is good for around 193-195mph actual speed (not speedo indicated but GPS verified).  In a perfect world, the 18/41 should be good for 205mph but based on wind, drag, tire-slip, etc. I'm hoping it will be enough to eek out 200mph.  It will be very close so I may have to try 18/40 so we'll see...

As far as break in, the bike was broken in properly (well more of a race style than owners manual recommendation) and then the oil was changed to Mobil-1 at 250-miles. It was ridden on the street for a while and then I changed the oil again before the first Texas Mile race (right at 1,000-miles). After the race, I had the bike dynoed as it sat from the Texas Mile race for the bonestock numbers. I did this so I had an idea how much power it was making when I ran 182-mph...

Once all of the basic mods were complete, I decided to try the Alisyn race oil which is in it now (and during the dyno runs).

I can't wait to ride her and see how she runs.  I truly about pissed myself with the results.  After all the results and info you see posted online, I was going to be tickled if she made 190rwhp on Race Gas. I really can't believe what Suzuki has done with the Generation-II Hayabusa and how much they've given us from the factory.  These are great times people; the Hayabusa really is an amazing platform to build on and I look forward to posting more info as I learn in my attempt to go FASTER!!!  8)

NICE NUMBERS!!

I didn't know Johnny was tuning the Bazzaz boxes....I got a buddy that needs to tune one of those things.

Hey how did the auto mapping thing work?  was it pretty close to the dyno sniffer?
Title: Re: Got-Busa? 2008 Project bike....
Post by: Got-Busa? on March 16, 2009, 10:52:07 AM
The Bazzaz setup seems to be pretty nice so far but needs a lot of testing still.  It doesn't have all the features that Johnny would have liked to see but it's a start with the 8-injector control.  Maybe they will update the software soon to add a few other features.

We didn't really play with the auto mapper to much because we were running out of time.  BUT....the sensor is spot on!  It was actually more correct than the dyno and confirmed a hunch Johnny had with his machine.  I'm happy with the purchase just wish I could record everything for review later with the mapper.

The only thing that sucks is that the Bazzaz is it's own system.  Since the dyno is made by Dynojet who makes the PC's, you can link right into the system and it all syncs for tuning.  Where the Bazzaz you have to run it's own program so as you are making changes the tuner is having to constantly flip back-and-forth between the two screens/programs when changing the dyno load.  The spare laptop I was trying to use to make it easier wasn't working right so that made things harder also.  You also have to turn the bike on THEN load the Bazzaz software.  It may cause errors or lock the computer if you don't turn the bike on first.

Maybe Johnny will come give his opinion of the setup...  8)

Out of curiosity, was the Bazzaz box reading richer or leaner then Johnny's sniffer?

The reason I ask is, when we were tuning mine at Johnny's a month ago, my LM1 was reading about .5 point richer then johnny's.  I also had my laptop up there to tune the Microtech box and run the logger, we ended up using the numbers my logger was showing....For instance, if my logger was reading 11.7-1 afr, Johnny's was showing 12.2-1(which is a tad lean for a turbo but....) we stuck with my numbers....so far, so good, I guess we'll see in 2 wks.... :grn:

My buddy Joe(he is on motohouston also) has the bazzaz with the auto mapper and he can't get the bike to run right when using the "Recommended" settings....he probably just isn't using it right.  I can't wait until someone gets a closed loop system that works and stays closed at WOT.....that will be the shit.

The Bazzaz verified what your LM1 was showing versus the dyno also.  The dyno was reading lean where the Bazzaz was showing .5 richer than his sensor. :thumb:

UPDATE:

Lucky o'l me ran some awesome runs March 27-29, 2009 at the TEXAS MILE....

I wasn't trying to get my hopes up based on my size and weight but was shooting for 190+MPH.  I secretly was expecting 195MPH.

First day PUMP FUEL:
1st pass- 187.817
2nd pass- 188.403
3rd pass- 188.379
4th pass- 191.938
5th pass- 193.012
6th pass- 193.494
7th pass- 195.210
8th pass- 194.207
9th pass- 193.923

I wasn't leaving like I wanted on Friday and was battling a cross wind on the big end running 194-195MPH ON PUMP GAS which had already put me past my goal.  I figured I could try a few things but wasn't trying to push it to hard since I still had Sat/Sun to race and experiment.

Saturday morning, dumped in the MR9 race gas and first pass out the gate ran 203MPH at stock height, 100% how I ride it on the STREET.  I couldn't believe the number so I hurried to slam her down 3"s to see how fast I could really go.  By the time I got back up to the line the wind was picking up but I managed to launch okay.  Slight wheelie with a bobbled 1-2 and early 2-3 shift but still busted out an impressive number.....

Second day MR9 RACE GAS:
1st pass- 203.741 (stock height)
2nd pass- 204.468 (remaining runs lowered 3")
3rd pass- 203.029
4th pass- 202.244
5th pass- 199.347

With a perfect launch, I feel I could have gone 206 on an absolutely PERFECT run but it just wasn't in the cards.  I tried a few things and then the wind got BAD.  After running 203 again, then 202, and then getting hit with a crosswind that had me leaned over about 10-degrees going through the traps....I figured I better call it quits while I am ahead.

Third day:
1st pass- 193.029
2nd pass- 193.477 (tried the double bubble windscreen and didn't like what the bike did with the crosswind)
3rd pass- 193.485
4th pass- 193.099

I couldn't be happier with my speeds and thank everyone for the help and support.  THANK YOU to my wife Sara for going and being my pit crew and getting a bunch of great shots....  :thumb:

I also want to say THANK YOU to Johnny Cheese for the tune, Brock & the guys at Brock's Performance, Guy at Tiger Racing and EVERYONE that has helped me along the way! THANK YOU...
 :USA: :beechug:

Remember this is on a 100% STOCK ENGINE, STOCK WHEELBASE bike with the only changes being what's posted in THIS thread...

.....PERIOD!!!

Awesome write-up!!!!  We are both about the same in height and weight(killer for top runs compared to the 5 foot nothing 100 pound nothing riders).  I have the Brock's short meg, PCIII, and X-TRE along with my bike being lowered and a few other parts removed for weight reduction.  Hoping to go somewhere and see how I can run.  Nervous b/c I have never gone to try a land speed record.  Any pointers would be great and very very helpful.  Thanks again for an awesome write-up and keep on rippin it up.

All I can say is get out and try it, you will never know until you do.  The first time out I would just feel out the bike and racing process; don't even expect to run anywhere close to 200mph.  Take lots of notes and ask lots of questions to see what others are doing.  Like the drag strip, it's all rider and weather conditions (if the bike is setup correctly of course).  If you come out to the TEXAS MILE, let me know and I'll do my best to help you.  If you have any questions or anything don't be afraid to ask...  :thumb:

It's a complete blast and you'll be hooked.  Just a warning once you do it, you will more than likely spend more money trying to go faster... :D

What an absolutely inspirational article, Josh. Congrats on your record. I enjoyed the read. Thanks for sharing your excitement!!

Did you ever hear back from Bazzaz regarding the 250 increments as to whether they were going to change up from the 500rpm adjustments?

Post by: Got-Busa? on April 10, 2009, 11:19:35 AM
Thanks!  I just wanted to show my results with an average size guy on the bike.  Most people don't believe these speeds and then they see a 150lb. guy/girl on board and don't think it's possible.  It's nice to have done my own testing and seeing the results.  Now I just need to decide the next step.  Big Bore, Nitrous, Turbo, Supercharger...???  :?

Bazzaz said they are getting ready to do some updates on the software but don't know if they are going to add this feature.  I told them they really should based on tuning ability and other systems out there but haven't heard back.  I'll give them another call to see if anything has changed... ;)

Finally talked to Bazzaz today and they are still waiting to release the new features.  New tuning capabilities are coming but they couldn't tell me everything just yet.  Sounds like the first changes will be easier smoothing ability of the fuel tables (via the software) and more low end RPM tuning for now but possibly more.  They are waiting for the owner to decide how for to take the upgrades.  I'll post more info when I get it....

I know I haven't given an update in a while so I figured it was time to let everyone know what's going on.

I went riding with a friend back in May and a truck turned into us.  We did everything we could but my friend was killed.  That event kind of slowed me down with my bike project.  It has been very hard for our friends and family so I needed to take a break for a bit.

Godspeed Brad!

I've given myself some time to think about what happened and will continue with my project.  At this time, I've decided to not ride on the street for a while and make it primarily a track bike (even though it will be street legal).  I was raised on motorcycles and have great family memories on motorcycles so I don't think I could ever give up something I love so much.

With that in mind, I probably won't be able to make it out to the Texas Mile in March so the next phase of mods will be slightly delayed...

The good news...

My wife and I are expecting our first child (October 10th) a little girl.  I don't want to leave momma home with a new born alone so I figured I could sit one out this year...

Life has been very busy and hectic for us due to recent events, work, and also trying to purchase a new home.  I'll get more up when I can but the next few months are going to be busy.....a very....FUN busy...  :D

Good luck to everyone at Loring, Maxton, and Texas this year, I'll be on the sidelines until 2010!  :thumb:

Take care,

Josh  :beechug: :USA:

As far as the bike, I'd like to get an air-shifter installed, data logger, and start playing with the ECU hacking.  I'm trying my best to make Loring this year and see if I can go 210+ on stock motor.

Once that is completed I need to decide on the next step. I'm thinking a head/cams package to keep her reliable and fun.  It appears to be the road less traveled in the LSR BUSA community for 210mph+.  I still can't get a TURBO out of my head though...

Always looking for sponsors if anyone has any extra trick parts they need tested back-to-back...  8)  :thumb:

Latest update:

I've sold the Bazzaz setup and gone with the ECU editor.  I also picked up the Innovate Motorsports LC-1/DL-32/XD-16 setup for logging and fine tuning track side.  Matt @ cycle-tek fixed me up with one of the air shifter setups that ties into the factory ECU also.  I'll update the thread when I get some time after the race.   :thumb:

Installed the Cycle-Tek air shifter...

Worked great and decided to go with the smaller 4.5oz bottles so I could keep it hidden in the tail.  It's a very nice system with a easy install.

Sold the Bazzaz setup to start testing the ECU flashing....

This system allows you to flash the factor ECU without using a piggy back system like the Bazzaz or Power Commander for tuning.  I didn't have time to do proper testing before the March '10 Texas Mile so I had a little trouble getting the bike to pull in top gear.

The flasher can be purchased from Greg: http://www.boostbysmith.com/ecugen2.html

Price: $200

Installation Instructions:

The software can be downloaded for FREE from PetirK who developed it.

It's been a long and busy couple years so time to get things back on schedule....

After doing a few LSR events, I feel I reached my goal on stock motor with my size/weight.  Of course everyone gets to the point where they decide that X horsepower just isn't getting it done anymore.  Once I hit that wall, I decided to go the Turbo route.

I started out with what I feel is the BEST!  I talked with Richard several times over the years and talked his ear/keyboard off on many occasions.  Every time I felt he was more than happy to answer my questions.  Even when I wasn't ready to buy, he still took the time.  Finally when it was time, he was the first person I'd call.  Since it was my first TURBO bike, I/we decided on a RCC Stage-1 kit to start.   I wanted more than the regular 4psi so upgraded injectors/fuel rail and an inter-cooled plenum was needed.  So you can either call it a Stage-2.5 or a Mini Ultra kit....whatever you like best... ;)

RCC Stage-1 Gen-II Turbo System-

I didn't want the bike to loud since I have small children so I decided on a full exhaust system.

Ultra Plenum setup

I made a several changes to the regular kit so if you have any questions I'll answer the best I can.  Otherwise, Richard would be the one to ask. :thumb:

Indeed!

It looks awesome!

It's been a few years since I did mine and I'm a little jealous of the clean plenum.  I have the secondary injectors in the top of the plenum which makes it a PIA to change the plugs.  It's also not as 'clean' looking in my opinion.

By the way, where is your fuel pressure regulator?

The new style plenums use the Bosch regulators and they hang underneath the fuel rail.

Damn Josh, I didnt even know you were going turbo.....  ( I Obviously havent been on here in a while)

Looks like a great kit!   Which turbo is it?  Is it the same T3/T4 the stg 2 kits use?  ( psi / HP is very similar to mine)

Why no windscreen for pics?

Congrats man!!!  FINALLY boosted after all these years. :thumb:

Thanks Alan!  Ya, I've been trying to do it for to long and have had WAY to much going on.  I finally got tired of it sitting and just said screw it, it's time.  Same Turbo (as far as I know), I decided 400whp should be more then enough for a while for what I want.  If I ever need more then that, it will probably become a full blow race bike at that point.  I actually forgot to bring the windscreen with me and wanted pics before I left so it just ended up that way for the shots.  It will be at Wilmington this weekend for its first race so hopefully everything goes smooth... :D

I hit you up on my thread on MH about the details of your kit but I went back and re-read your thread....  Awesome street turbo kit for sure.....exactly what I would want... That turbo is PLENTY  for what most of us do....  A 35R would suck on the street...

Yours made pretty much exactly the same HP as mine did at each boost level.... My compression is prolly a little lower with the JE dish pistons tho...

You're gonna want to put a 4" arm on that thing so its rideable... I ride mine at stock height, 3.5" over, 19/47 gearing and a 14.5lb spring.... Its ALMOST too much for 3rd gear....sometimes it power wheelies 3rd, sometimes not...depends on if I nail it quickly or roll into it.  I pretty much forgot I even have 1st/2nd gear, I don't even try to play in those.  Big spring and low gearing makes it nasty..... I can grab half throttle and it will spin the tire from 40-50 mph in 2nd... :bah:

You're gonna love the shit...

Remember to datalog EVERY pass..... You never know when it may pop and you'll need the data if it does... Plus you may need to add some fuel to it out on the track.

Figured I would update the thread and give some results of the first time out with the new Turbo build.

We arrived in Ohio the week before the September Wilmington Mile race to see some family and take a little vacation.  Due to the mishap at the last event no other events license or speed runs would count and everyone had to start over going fast.  That meant I would need to do a 150, 175, 200,...shake down run before I could go wide open throttle.  I rode the bike around on Thursday doing some testing and everything worked great.  Got to the track on Friday for tech and the bike ran fine.  The bike was inspected and passed tech with flying colors then covered for the night.

We arrived early Saturday to be first in line and get the license runs done. Put the key in and the bike won't run.  Cranks and cranks, fires for a second or two then dies.  I figured it was just cold because of the temperature drop over night so keep trying and nothing.  The bike ran fine the day before so I lift the tank to look around and it fires right up.  We looked everything over checked all the fuel lines and wiring and couldn't find anything.  Lowered the tank and went and got in line.  I waited 3 1/2 hours to make my first run; didn't get 500' down the track and the bike starts sputtering and dies.  I keep restarting it and limp it off the track.  Back to the pits, we pull the tank again and start looking at everything.  Can't find a single thing anywhere.  I start pulling plugs and checking connectors, wiring, etc...everything to find something and nothing.  Start it up and do a few test runs up and down the pits, everything seems to be normal so we go get in line again.  There were a bunch of people and both lines were over a 1/4 mile long.  We waited and waited another 2 1/2 hours but the second run never came on Saturday.  We had to leave by 4pm to get back for my daughters Birthday so we only got one failed attempt on Saturday. Bummer...

Sunday morning with the lines, we arrived again extra early to test the bike and make sure everything was okay.  The bike fired right up did a few runs and everything seemed fine.  I got my gear on and headed for the starting line.  Just about to the starting line and the bike starts bucking and surging.  At this point I'm beyond pissed and head back to the pits.  I remove all the fairings and start going part by part, wire by wire, and connector by connector trying to figure it out.  It looks like one of the fuel pump wires (not the lines) may have got bent or tweaked so we fixed it.  I left all the fairings off and went out for a quick street ride to see what it would do.  At that point the bike ran fine.  Did a couple of quick blasts up to 160mph with no issues.  The bike purred like a kitten same as it did before.  I went back and put all the fairings back on.  At that point it was almost 10am so I went and got in line.

The lines at that point started getting shorter and shorter.  At 11:30 I finally got my first run down the course.  Everything went smooth as butter as I putted down the track watching the GPS closely to make sure I didn't break out of my speed.  I needed to stay within +/- 10mph of the first license speed of 150mph.  As I watched the GPS display 155mph all the way down course I made quick glances back and forth.  Just before the traps I saw 148....then 144...so I gave it a little bit of gas just before the line so I wouldn't go below 140mph.  My first run resulted in a 160.011mph run.

I almost broke out so I got very lucky on that run.

By this point it was approaching noon and we heard that a lot of people leave after noon on Sunday to make the long drive home.  That worked out great for us because I hurried to get back in line to make another license pass.  By this time the lines kept getting shorter and shorter.  It was a little after 1pm when I got my second license run done.  On the 175 license I ended up running 174.643mph!

It was getting late and racing stopped at 4pm so we hurried again to get back in line.  On my third pass I ran a nice and easy run up to 200mph and just shifted into 6th and cruised through the traps running 202.399!  First 200mph pass on the Turbo setup...   :thumb:

I looked at my watch and hurried back in line.  It was a little after 3:20pm at this point and I wasn't sure if I'd get another run.  I got up to the starting area and there were a bunch of people ahead but most were bikes.  I was lucky enough to get called into the pre-stage area at 3:50 and there were still 10 people ahead of me.  I thought no way am I going to get another run.  So I just waited and waited and finally they make the radio announcement that it's 4pm.  I thought for sure we were done.  There were still 4 people ahead of me and then Al the starter says I would be the last run of the event.  I got excited that I would finally be able to make a full pass going wide open throttle and seeing what the Turbo was capable off.

Last run ended up being only 204.542mph!

The good news is I didn't hurt anything on the bike, I beat my previous best of 204.465 when I was stock engine N/A...

BUT....I found out I have plenty of power I haven't even used and I have a LOT of tuning and experimenting to do with ECU editor.  The boost was turned way down.  I was barely even using 240-260whp and due to the boost spiking a few times from 8psi up to 16.6psi according to the log, the bike just shut down.  Once the computer saw that I reached my boost limit (which I had set very low) the ECU essentially shut the bike down in 5th and 6th gear.  So the bike ran fine through 4th, wheelied just a little in 4th and then once I shifted the bike into 5/6 the bike quit pulling.  It surged on/off as the computer fought to keep the boost below my target setting at half track.  So the bike pulled fine into 4th and essentially coasted through the traps in 6th gear since the ECU wouldn't allow me to over-boost and build power in the last two gears.

I know, rookie mistake on my part but then again it's my first TURBO-bike, first time out with the Turbo, first time at Wilmington, and many other firsts.  I'm really just glad to get back out racing.  I've taken almost two years off racing and have had two beautiful daughters in that time.  It felt good just to get back out to the track, see some old friends, and enjoy the toy again.  I'm looking forward to next year and trying some new stuff and changing the setup a little.  Good to know I've got an extra 200whp left on the table that I haven't even touched yet.  :tu:

Another funny part is I missed the class record by .02mph.....  :hys:

I just want to thank my father in-law Steve for taking off work and coming out to the races to help with loading, unloading, trouble shooting, etc..etc...and everything!  Thank you to my family for the support, Mike and Austin for bringing your pit bike to run around on and help.  Thanks to Charles Freeman at the track for getting ECU editor working again on my laptop, and JP for checking out my logbox.

Also want to thank Rick Livy @ Rick's Custom Cycle for the build!

Richard Peppler @ RCC Turbo's for the kit and all the TURBO knowledge and help!

Thank you Brock @ Brock's Performance, Johnny Cheese, Shane Stubbs, Tom Gates, Bill Warner, Bob Sellers, Guy Caputo, Karl Gunter, and many others I'm probably forgetting.  Thank you guys for taking the time and sharing your knowledge and secrets to the newbie!  :tu:  :beechug:

Did some testing at Johnny Cheeses shop last weekend and things are looking good for the Texas Mile!

We played with the ECU editor and tested a few things.  The tune looks to be spot on so we'll see how it goes... :thumb:

I guess it's time to finally update this after all this time.  Life has been more than busy just glad to get back out and do a little racing...  :thumb:

March 22nd:

I had to work in the morning so wasn't planning to race Friday.  I arrived in Beeville TX about 3pm to race on the new Texas Mile track located at Chase Field.  No issues with tech or anything.  Made sure to take my time on the track drive through and look everything over real close.  I wanted to pay close attention to the new course due to previous events.  Everything looked great, they had worked on the transition patches and they felt/looked really nice.  The shutdown was longer than Goliad and they seemed to have did a lot of work with the big patch area at the very end.  After checking everything over I was ready for the next morning shake down runs.

March 23rd:

I arrived at the track at 6:30am (racing starts at 8am) and there was already a GIANT line waiting at the grid.  By the time I got in line I was about three rows back before I would get my first run in.

Considering how far back I was, I ran my first pass just after 9am.

This was a shakedown run to test the bike as well as the track.  I took off very slow because I wasn't sure how the ECU editor boost control was going to react after the latest updates/changes.  Started off very slow and everything felt perfect, smooth, and no issues so stayed in it for the full mile.

VIDEO of my slow start (THANK YOU Charles):

After the first shakedown, I felt more confident to go a little faster and give it a little more throttle...

Well this pass was going great and smooth.  Just after the 3/4-mile sign (estimate around 220ish) I felt something hit my left leg so I let up and coasted through the lights.  I start thinking WTFO was that and look down.  My front lower fairings on BOTH sides ripped completely off and disintegrated.

At this point I was kind of pissed because I wasn't sure what to do next since I still had a full day and a half of racing left.

I went and took a break and just relaxed for a while.  By this point the temps had gotten into the high-80's and it was starting to get HOT!

After a bit of looking and talking to my buddy Bob Sellers, he said "just run it naked!"  I thought about it for a second and said...."OK!"

March 24th:

I was up early again and still three rows back..lol.

I also went ahead and taped my ram-air openings close this time in hopes of a little help due to no lowers.

I also decided to turn up the boost for day two since the bike was a complete dog in 1st-4th gear.  With the boost turned up and the weather conditions in our favor I made my third run.

You can tell by my half mile speeds that I've still got a long way to go in the first half mile...

At this point I was like a kid on Christmas morning! :D  I couldn't be happier because I met my goal of over 220mph but.....

I still had a lot left on the table fighting wheelies through 4th gear.  I was going to just pack it up and go home but figured I would try one more time and see if I could get a cleaner start and first half.

On my second run I was a little cleaner starting but still BIG wheelies and wheel spin in 5th/6th...

The run wasn't anywhere close to being clean but at least I know I have plenty more on the table for improvement.  Just happy to be back racing and get some runs in safely this weekend.  I'll be back for more with more tuning/tweaking and progress.  But for now I'm VERY HAPPY with the results.

I want to thank a LOT of people for helping me get to this point.

Rick @ Rick's Custom Cycles
Richard @ RCC Turbo's

...and many many others you know who you are!  :thumb:

Of course thanks to my family, wife and kids for allowing me to continue my hobby after these last few tough years.  Love you guys!

Time for an update with the latest changes:

OEM was coming up on 6-years old and decided to try one of the new Lithium battery's from SHORAI!

Saved about 5lbs over the stock (sorry about the pic quality, they are from my phone this time).

Depending which you choose, they are anywhere from $140-170 for the Shorai.  Others can be $170-200+.

I paid $143 shipped!

202.....is actually my bike #.  My fastest pass was 196.8mph and that's running 18psi in 3rd & 4th gear.  Yes on standing start,...I'm geared for the Mile so I had a gear change to 5th right at the traps which killed a little speed... ;)

What gearing are you running?

Figure I should give a quick update.

Ran her again at the ECTA season opener at the Ohio Mile.

I ran into some issues with ECU editor boost control, air shifter/trans, etc so didn't do as well as I hoped.  However,....

..my main goal was to get into the ECTA "official" 200MPH CLUB and was able to do that so I can't complain.

I just wanted to thank everyone that has supported me through this thing called life. Most don't know but this was a tough weekend for me.

6-years ago yesterday I went on a nice motorcycle ride with a friend of mine through Texas hill country. About an hour into our ride a truck turned in front of us and with zero time caused a head on collision killing my friend.

In his memory I wanted to dedicate my record passes and 200-MPH CLUB entry this weekend to him....Brad Marveggio!

Sometimes things happen in life we just don't understand. We've got to continue on, enjoy those memories, great times shared, and live every day to it's fullest because you never know when it's your time.

Godspeed Brad, DaveO, and Bill!

My first pass got me into the club at 205mph!

Second pass trying to get the boost control to work resulted in a 204mph!

Third run on Sunday got the boost to hold a little better but it kept popping out of gear went 212.77mph!

Fourth and final run after numerous missed shifts and crazy wind was another 212mph.

At this point the wind was to bad and not worth the risk with a crazy cross wind blasting you at half track so I packed it up for the weekend.

Also want to congratulate Wilson on getting in the 200 CLUB with a 200.99 run on a basic bolt-on Busa (202mph best) and Brandon with a 206 CLUB entry and a best of 213mph!  It was nice seeing everyone and had a great weekend.. :thumb:

Like a Boss Josh. I also had a hard time this weekend and had to walk away from the record booth for a second thinking about my buddy who died in a car accident a couple years ago. I dedicated my last run to "Joe Boss" and was breaking down alittle behind the shades.
Everytime I get a picture for the 200mph club ceremony I have crocks on which I think Keith and Tonya aren't fans off.

Ended up running 232MPH back in May at the first ECTA event of 2021.  Not a terrible shakedown after many years away and 10-15mph headwind with 15-20 crosswind...

Wind at Arkansas for the April event just wasn’t favorable.
15 MPH on Friday and 20-25+ Saturday
https://youtu.be/uodUORFbBPA

Didn’t even push th me Turbo bike because it was leaned over and wheelies the entire track so coasted to a 207 MPH

Gen-3 had no chance with the wind but did set the Production Class Record with it at 178.855 MPH

I’m really liking the Gen-3 and looking forward to making some changes.
