Title: 2004 Yamaha R6, 130 lb. rider. How fast in a mile?
Post by: 106mm on October 18, 2009, 10:58:19 PM
My girlfriend wants to attempt the Texas Mile on her stock 2004 Yamaha R6. The bike has about 100 hp in stock form. She will weigh approximately 135 in leathers. It will be lowered and MAYBE have a shot of nitrous. She's 5'4". Any ideas on how fast she could go assuming a good tuck and all of that kind of stuff? She's not afraid to launch hard or go fast. Thanks in advance.

I've bone 162 mph on an 06 R6, pipe, pc3, filter, stock gearing no mirrors

I've gone 164 mph on an 07 GSXR 600, pipe, pc3, filter, -1 up front, no mirrors

Both speeds verified by GPS.

I weigh about the same suited.

160 mph is a good target but practice...practice....

If you're gonna spray, start SMALL!

That's what I thought I'd hear. What size of shot would you run on such a small engine? 20?

I'm not sure how serious you guys are but prep the bike safety wire tires brakes etc Come out spend the weekend having fun and getting a besline and find out if this is really what you want to do. If your still interested go with the Nitrous. I'm no Nitrous guru but the guys at Nitrous Express put me over 200MPH on my second pass with their equipment. Also I can tell you that running a progressive controller makes it so you never feel the Nitrous come on. I was scared to death(sorry to many Fast and Furious Movies) with a wet progressive system I never really "felt" the system"hit". Also the wet system is the way to go because you don't have to worry about leaning out or running out and getting too rich. The thing is to set up a wet system and a progressive controller you are going to have to spend the $$$ so thats why I say come out try it out and then if she is still interested go for it!

Safety is my number one concern. She's my girlfriend...and a mom of two. I've done 200 at Texas (LIKE YOU JUST DID....SWEET! CONGRATS AGAIN!!) and I will prep the bike and rider in a huge way. She's not afraid to go fast, and more importantly, she's a thinker. She doesn't do things without preparation and mimimalization of risk.
I've used lots of nitrous on race cars (325hp hit on one of my old Corvette drag cars) , but I'll be the first to admit it's a different scenario for bikes. We'll more than likely stick with a small wet shot and only use it only if she gets close to a particular goal and can't grab it. She and I both meticulously plan before taking action. Thanks for the help and congratulations once again!

I've talked to all three Mikes at NX quite a bit and Owner Mike(Mike Go Go and Mike Abney are the other 2 Mikes) he told me that one of their customers ran some 170's on a 600 on juice! The nice thing about my setup is that i can adjust it to what HP I want and also what HP I want it to start out at and then also how long from the starting amount it takes to ramp up to full spray. I can honstly say I never felt the NX kick in it just felt hella faster.

The big goal is 160. I'm going to do everything I can to make that happen. I think it will be LOTS of little things and a couple of big things. lol

How much distance did it take? I'm hoping that the bike can get it done in 5,280 feet, which is hard to do.
Exhaust has been bought. Getting a Power Commander and nitrous over the next week or two. Removed the rear pegs, lowered it bigtime, mirrors removed, 2 teeth down in back...makin' progress.

Not sure but i can tell you it traps 126mph in the 1/4 with my chubby ass on it so if i maintained that rate of acceleration (within reason of course) i would think a 130 to 140lb rider would be close to 160mph easpecially if the went -1 on the front sprocket...

K7 Gixxer 600 I went 164, roll-on for just under 9/10ths of a mile at a good clip, even at 3000 rpms in 1st it does 163:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDCNCJSW9PU

06 R6:  162 geared stock (tall):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N3EbvUHVwI

1st gen CBR 600RR with no ram air tubes and missing bodywork went 154 but that thing was damn near a deathtrap with motor mounts bolts falling out.

160 is a good goal for you guys  :thumb:

Thanks for the vids. I'm approaching this the same way I did the Texas Mile, I'm building a bike that should go past the goal easily...then I'm allowing for reality, screw-ups and stupid luck. lol

I think 2-teet down in the rear is going to be overkill on the 600 but I'm just guessing...

Why? I just don't want to run out of gear (been there).

I could be wrong but I don't think you'll have the power to pull it.  It's not like the TURBO Busa and stock gearing.  You might be able to add teeth on the 600 and pick UP some MPH in 1-mile.

So that's equal to around +3 in the rear.  Don't you think -2 on the rear from stock would be a bit much in 1-mile...?

Maybe I'll take both with me. I really want this to happen. She BY DAMN will reach 160. lol
I've seen several sources that list the top speed as 160. That's why I want to have more power.

Don't shoot yourself in the foot, go out there rolling stock gearing and then see what happens.  Everyone always gears too tall and can never pull it....especially first timers.

That's what I'll do. I'll just take the extra gear and install if needed. Thanks!

I think the mistake alot of first timers might makek is not realizing that this is a 1 mile drag race. If you gear really tall you might not be able to accelerate fast enough to be topped out by the mile. on the other hand if your too short you might find yourself like I did bumping the rev limiter at the mile. I'll regear for March for sure good luck!@ let me know if you need any "girly"help!

Us Girls gotta stick together! Support each other! Besides if she needs any pointers or to borrow gear etc etc. Remember sometimes it's easier to hear it coming from your peers than from your spouse. If you guys need anything let us know

Remember that the power commander itself won't necessarily make you go any faster.  I've seen bikes lose HP and MPH with the generic downloadable maps from Dynojet.  In other words they were better off not even having the power commander installed in their bike.  Get it tuned properly before you go.

I totally agree. The bike will be dynoed with and without the nitrous, muffler baffle and Power Commander.

Just went 157 mph on GPS on an 03-05 model with -1 up front, +1 in the back, mirrors, normal bolt-ons, stock motor...that was on the rev limiter with a slightly worn 180/55 rear tire.

8/10ths roll, slight decline, a little bumpy, decent conditions, no headwind or tailwind, I'm about 120 lbs.

-1 up front with a fresh 180/55 tire, you should be damn near the rev limiter through the traps at an actual 160  8)

Bike is now down 2 on the back sprocket and has a 24hp shot. I'm using a Dynojet control hub to facilitate two maps (all motor/nitrous). The fuel enrichment is 9 percent at full throttle on the "B" map. I'm taking my laptop in case it needs a bit of tweaking. Got the GF a Teknic one-piece. Race happens in a couple of weeks. Woohoo!

Just noticed that I never updated this thread. Sorry! My GF went 159.403 with a headwind. She wasn't able to use the nitrous because they shut down the track early. No big deal though, we only drove a thousand miles to get there. All in all, it was a great time and she enjoyed herself big time. She wants to race again soon. We plan to take both of our bikes back next winter. My 'Busa should have over 400 hp by then. She's gonna try to go a little faster and so am I.

Had there not been a headwind, we'd have 160. Another timing unit at the track said she went 159.8! Good luck!
