Title: RACE IN OHIO? I need your input!
Post by: 106mm on December 29, 2010, 03:43:18 PM
I can't be terribly specific yet, but who would be interested in attending or running their bike in an event in southern Ohio? The strip is just under 11,000 feet long.
1. What must the strip have for you to attend an event there?
2. What does the venue need? (Camping, electrical hookup, etc?)
3. How much should it cost (seriously! lol)?
4. How far would you drive?
5. When should it be scheduled?
6. How many days?
7. Special needs? Nitrous refills, race fuel, etc?
8. Anyone want to be a sponsor?
9. Anyone live close and want to be involved in some way?
This will be an event with Tag Heuer timing equipment and a staff of people who know how to use it properly. Please take the time to respond in a thoughtful manner. If you send me a personal message, I will keep our correspondence private. Thanks in advance for your input.

1. What must the strip have for you to attend an event there? - SECURITY
2. What does the venue need? - SECURITY
3. How much should it cost MORE THAN MAXTON, LESS THAN MOJAVE
4. How far would you drive? - 18HRS, 59MIN
5. When should it be scheduled? - TWO WEEKS AWAY FROM EVENTS AT TEXAS, LORING, MOJAVE
6. How many days? - 2 DAYS
7. Special needs? Nitrous refills, race fuel, etc? - KEEP IT SIMPLE AT FIRST, NO NITROUS, NO RACE FUEL UNLESS VP WILL DO IT
8. Anyone want to be a sponsor? - TOO BROKE
9. Anyone live close and want to be involved in some way? - TOO FAR AWAY

Not sure if you are talking about Wilmington Airpark but if you are you may want to check this thread.

Seems like those guys may already be working on it. Might want to hook up with them and see if they can help you or you can help them.

Hope you guys can make it happen. That is only 5-6 hours from me.

Karl covered my replies pretty good except keep it a couple weeks away from Maxton also.

Being in Tennessee me and the boys could make this event drive-wise easily............I'm in!

Dan,
keeping it away from all Maxton events is difficult bc there are 5? of them.

some time in mid/late June could be good; after Texas Memorial day 3 day event, before Loring 3 day Mid July event (including Monday at Jim's lobster fest)

I think Karl summed it up, but maybe running 1.25 Miles might keep it a little more intersting and draw in some more people that run the 1 Mile venues.

You're right Karl it might be tough because of the 5 events, there are no meets in July & August due to folks getting ready for the Salt.

I'd vote for the first week or two in April because it's hard to getting runs at Maxton at the first event because of the Hot Rod magazines top speed challenge for the cars. We quit going to the first event a couple years ago. If this things happens in Ohio I'm sure they'd need/want the car guys there too.

I'd like to see an event in Ohio.

1. What must the strip have for you to attend an event there?

Wilmington is very close to lots of stuff so you really don't have to pack EVERYTHING like some of the other events out in BFE.  Hell, Brock's and a few other shops are just up the road (35-minutes).  Restrooms, power would be nice (but not required), good organization, and security!

2. What does the venue need? (Camping, electrical hookup, etc?)

Restrooms (anything else is close or can be brought).

3. How much should it cost (seriously! lol)?

$200-300ish

4. How far would you drive?

I have in-laws just up the road so it's do-able...

5. When should it be scheduled?

Whenever the snow is gone.  Prefer off season so I can get vacation when others are NOT taking it... :D

6. How many days?

I like the 3 day events because it gives me more time to race since I have to take off work anyway.  I'd even do a weekday event if someone had one...

7. Special needs? Nitrous refills, race fuel, etc?

Not really, most of the VP fuels or special stuff people have to bring anyway...

8. Anyone want to be a sponsor?

What kind of sponsor or do you just mean financial backing?

9. Anyone live close and want to be involved in some way?

I don't live close anymore but use to.  Will probably end up back in Ohio someday so will probably use it a lot in the future...

A mile and1/4 might entice me to come. Its almost as far a Bonneville so would be iffy. If it was in April to June might be a good shakedown for Bville.

Hey 106,

Since this would be close to Brocks place and he makes some LSR events, he might be interested in sponsoring something........just a thought. He's awful good with the drag racing crowd and has been good to our sport.

Things that come to my mind:
When considering dates, only take salt racers as a minor influence.  Take the lead from TX, they in no way care about salt racers(and justly so).  They care about people that want to go fast, have a vehicle to do so with, and have money to do it.  Salt race only care about salt and the few that will do both are in such small numbers it doesn't make a difference.
saying that, the Hot summer months would be the best for a northern state like Ohio.

to many classes make it complicated, especially full LSR classes.  Keep it simple.

advertise, get the word out about the race and it will be profitable.

No matter how long the track, timing should at least take place at the 1 mile to unify the tracks.  The extra timing @ the 1.25 will be a bonus and an extra draw to the race.

Basic classes can be used to invoke repeat bussiness. (something to shoot for)

Start out with a very fare price to get people interested, later the price can go up a little

Talked to a few people and Clinton County Port Authority is in charge of the field now so you'd have to call them to discuss it.

I think there are a LOT of people in the midwest that would attend, they just don't have the time or means to travel to Maxton, Texas, Miami, etc.  Just on the local boards I know a bunch would attend and even more cars...  :thumb:

I think there would be a real GOOD chance of this happening at Wilmington if you can get insurance coverage for it.  They are really hurting with the economy and DHL pulling out.  I think the amount of hotels and local businesses that would benefit would definitely get the city to help advertise...

I've been in the Mile racing for sevral years now and there are positives & negatives to all events. I've only raced at Texas but have talked to lots of people and read what people have said about the other events. Someone will probably get their panties in a wad but who cares. We need to be honest about things for the Mile racing to grow.
Texas - wide track & short shut down, better when there were less people, less cost, and shorter waits in line.
March 25-27
May 27-29
October 21-23
Loring - wide track with long shut down, not crowded, not expensive, should also time at the Mile though.
July 15-17
Maxton - narrow & curved, too much tech, politics.
???
Miami - trying to get off the ground but having trouble, track is great, not too expensive, not too crowded.
???
Mojave - Just started, I don't know much about it.
April 10, October 8-9

At all the drag races you race for a purse, tropy, or plaque. Someone should step up and off something to the King of each event at their track.

Post by: entropy on December 30, 2010, 01:02:23 PM
to amplify what Tom said:

Texas, i love it but they let too many people run, often times long waits in lane

Maxton - too much tech, 3 times is way overkill, curve on start not an issue, curve on shutdown requires attention (sort of like Texas short down requires attention), more like a family gathering than an event.

Miami - trying to get off the ground but having trouble, track is best condition of all,  not too expensive, not too crowded.
???

Mojave - beautiful track, WAY long & wide, most organized of any event
April 10, October 8-9

Yep, I'd try to keep the first event economical $125-150, 2 days, keep overhead as low as possible........just Johnny on the spots.
..................But if your serious about making money hire a consulting firm to shoot out e-mails to get people's demographics and see what you can sell them next. LOL, sorry could not resist.

I'd go for a June or August. As I know a few fellas on here that will be attending Loring and then WOS Sept 14-17.

The first draft of the proposal for the folks in Wilmington is finished. I will carve it into the final version over the next few days and present it to them on Wednesday or Thursday. The response from racers and officials has been very good. After we receive our response from the city, we will go from there. Think positive thoughts!

Living in this area for several years, I can tell you that August isn't the nicest weather.  Temps can easily approach 95-97F with humidity through the roof. I was with a client at Edgewater Drag Strip this past August and temp hit 100F. I'm sure not as bad as Texas, but not anything near what we see in Maine.  Also, anything earlier than April 1st or later than mid-Nov you risk snow being on the track.

I would vote June.
I know quite a few of us that have done Maxton in June and it is REALLY hot.  You could do it the weekend before their event, June 17-19th, so as not to conflict with Maxton, and it is still 3 weeks after Texas.

1. What must the strip have for you to attend an event there? Over a mile.  It looks like there are extra "run-off" areas.  A mile and a half with a 3/4 mile shutdown is ideal
2. What does the venue need? (Camping, electrical hookup, etc?) Just camping
3. How much should it cost (seriously! lol)? $200
4. How far would you drive? 14 hours max
5. When should it be scheduled? June
6. How many days? Two - Tech available Friday, race all day Saturday and all day Sunday
7. Special needs? Nitrous refills, race fuel, etc? Race gas vendor
8. Anyone want to be a sponsor? Approach Brock first
9. Anyone live close and want to be involved in some way? N/A

1.5 miles = 7,920 feet.  11,000 - 7,920 = 3,080.  3/4 of a mile = 3,960.  So you would "only" need 880 more feet to have a reasonably safe shutdown area.  It looked like there were other paved areas before and after the ends of the runway.

Per Airnav, the runway is 10,701 'x 150'.  SW end has 1,000' overrun and NE has 200'.  Not sure if that has been updated/changed or if it's usable.  Most larger fields typically have 800'-1,000' of overrun...

Post by: TURBO KING on January 04, 2011, 02:52:48 PM
If that 1,200 feet could be added to it, it would be a mile and a half run with almost exactly 3/4 of a mile for shutdown (21 feet more)

I just got off the phone with the city official I've been dealing with. They got my proposal. They will be discussing the venture over the next "couple of months". Everyone may now officially relax! lol

Anything added from the discussion on Landracing.com?

Someone on the Ohio forum said the local car club is trying to use it for Auto-X racing.  If more than one organization is pursuing it, hopefully it makes things easier.  Then again, hopefully one doesn't screw it up for the others...

You must admit, we like to move faster than others. lol
For the record, this will not slow me down at all. I'm going to use the time to prepare even more.

The city officials and Port Authority members have seen my 7 1/2 minute audio/video presentation. I was told by a city official that they were all impressed. Other aspects of the continuing effort to establish a race in Wilmington will be presented to them over the next few weeks. Sorry to be so cryptic, but some of the plans must remain close to the vest until the right time. Thanks to everyone for your input and enthusiasm!

Karl,
I'm gonna try to make it to as many events as possible this year. I'd love to see the first 280 pass on a sit-on bike and watch my buddy break 200 in one of his Corvettes. I'd also like to bring my bike to an event soon. I'd love to see 225 out of it and 170 out of my GF's R6.

Just remember that you can't please everyone and some people never have anything positive to add.

Tom, thank you for adding that caveat.  I am sure Sean will have to refer to it many times to keep his sanity throughout this whole ordeal!

Sean, best wishes and best of luck to you in your quest!

We are all pulling for you.  Imagine how great it will feel speaking at the drivers meeting!
