Title: Turbo Busa Car
Post by: proutyc on November 11, 2011, 02:01:00 AM
My race car build from down in New Zealand. Not sure if much interest to you guys but you can make out its still a Busa engine

Engine is a 99 Busa turbo on E85 with the following parts.
MTC turbo pistons
Carriilo Rods
Billet Output shaft
APE studs and valves etc
DTA ECU.

Picture is the engine sitting in the car. Plan to run  at 8psi initially with 550kg car that corners at over 2G due to gfround effect aero as outlawed in F1 in the 70-80's

Engine Bay. You can see the headers and turbo sit above engine, though not benfical to centre of gravity it helps get heat out of engine bay and also keep plumbing to a minimum

Shows suspension which is pushrod as per most formula cars but also has 3rd spring which is used to control ride height

Kind of a 956/962 body style, yes? :thumb: Very cool project.

More pics as you go. Vids, too!

Its called a Saker but yes similiar to old school lemans. but like a 956. Mine is a one off as only bike powered car, normally they have Turbo EJ20's or Lexus v8's

Will update when brake and plumbing goes in

Good choice to use a lightweight Hayabusa Turbo engine  :tu:

Not much interest Chris? Quite the opposite.

More build pics. You don't necessarily have to go back to teh very beginning, just start from the Iron Ore and Carbon being mixed for the steel and the Bauxite hitting the electric arc furnace for the Aluminum and go from there.

Hey John.

What stat was your motor in after the dyno blowup?

Car's definitely no bike and must say the engine bays filling up quick with other stuff. Real happy with the external dry sump and pressure pump configuration.

Here a couple of the early engine miockup pictures

Happy to post whatever picture people interested in. Let me know what you'd like to see and will post picture.

Suspension is pretty well straight off an indycar with adjustable swaybars and also weight jackers on both end to adjust the aero balance

Post by: proutyc on November 21, 2011, 11:12:09 PM
Some pictures of the external dry sump system. Is driven off the starter assembly.

Have removed mount so pump can be pictured. The mount is made from 4130 and mounts off one engine mount and also the old smog mounts. Increases pump capicity significantly over standard. Pump is a 1.2in wide 3 stage raceline pump. Also uses external filter and pressure relief valve (set at 85psi)

Second picture show race heat exchanger and some of plumbing.

Main pressure feed is into main gallery and you can see the scavenge section attached to bottom of pump

Some of the carbon parts.

These include fender vents (front and rear) and also indy car side mirrors (I really like the look of these.)
Title: Re: Turbo Busa Car
Post by: Lumpasaurus on November 22, 2011, 05:33:07 AM
I was going to ask to see dry sump, very nice.  Do you come from oil filter location straight to main galley?  Remote oil filter or a spacer with line feeding main oil galley?  Super cool build, must distort your smile in the corners with all the g's it pulls.
Title: Re: Turbo Busa Car
Post by: proutyc on November 22, 2011, 12:18:53 PM
The dry sump pressure line runs around the left side of the motor through a Petersons external filter directly into the main gallery as pictured.

The sister car to mine pulls over 2G cornering so yeah they get bit tough on the neck by end of the weekend. Definitely nice going around the outside of someone for postition on what people think is the slippery side.

Car runs ground effects so has carbon tunnels. I've not finished them yet but will post a picture in a couple of days.

Have any photos of the car showing both sides ?

Nice work !!!!!

I've not finished the custom sides on mine as we have no need for any of the intakes.

Here's a picture of a mates one. This one is powered by a EJ20 turbo motor

Picture of brakes.

The discs are Ap racing Nascar superspeedway rear discs. The caliper are PFC formula3 race car calipers.

Sorry for picture quality was off my phone the other night
Title: Finished dry sump system (well almost)
Post by: proutyc on January 12, 2012, 02:08:14 AM
Indy car oil/water cooler now installed and mount for finished external dry sump system.

Next task is to complete the composite front aero diffuser and the wiring.
Title: Cooling plumbing
Post by: proutyc on January 12, 2012, 02:14:27 AM
If you are interested here is a picture of the water system.

Pipes are increased to 28mm (1.125") this is due to pumping the radiator to front of car. pipes are almost 2.5 meters long
Title: Re: Turbo Busa Car
Post by: proutyc on February 01, 2012, 05:57:39 PM
Front diffuser. My first go a resin infusion. This was a heap of fun and heaps easier than vac bagging wet layup.

Electric blanket is to help with the cure, just pealed away to show the carbon.

Very rigid and quite light
Title: Re: Turbo Busa Car

Continuing to play with Carbon. These are the full length ground effect tuneels (aero as outlaw in F1 in the early 80's) These weigh 8lbs complete each side

Title: Re: Turbo Busa Car
Post by: proutyc on February 29, 2012, 04:26:14 PM
Thanks Guys.

Yeah has been alot of fun and especially considering I sit in an office all day running code. Its refreshing for the brain to hide in garage

Cookie the carbon was pretty simple really. I have a table that we made long enough and then I have some stiff plastic on  top (to seal the table surface) The tunnels are simply eps foam wrapped in packing tape then that's taped to the table and vacuum bagged over.

Hope that's what you wanted to know

We've now got the brake fitted for real. really happy with the.

The disc are rear Ap Racing disc off JGR nascar Toyota's as used on Superspeedways. The Calipers are also Nascar Superspeedway but a billet PFC radial 4 pots.

Making wings this weekend so hopefully they come out well

Haven't updated much recently.

Been doing little things recently. Have just watercut and made a new debris catcher which sandwiches between case and sump. Works on dry sump system. Mate wants one for his racecar now.

Made on Aircraft alloy, stainless filter and alloy grade solid rivets.

Also here a picture of the modified Nismo torsen diff whoch is used for the chain drive

Progress been slow recently with making wings and a few other carbon parts. I did mount this nice little quaife diff last week. diff is great as keeps axles a similiar length even though drive of the hayabusa engine is offset.-

Nice progress  :tu:

Would it be perhaps better to use a steel sprocket and not aluminum ?
Just a thought because your car is much heavier than a bike  .....

Title: Re: Turbo Busa Car
Post by: proutyc on June 26, 2012, 03:13:39 AM
yeah the sprockets are alloy. They are the same as used on the radical race cars. I'm using these so that between me and a friend we can share spares.

We probably do a total of 800-1000km in a season and we change the sprocket at most tracks. I plan to use 2 or 3 different front ones instead of changing the rear.

thanks for the feedback always great to hear what people think

If you perhaps want to change, those are nice and solid sprockets:

Been frustrating recently as the finish is now visable but it takes so long.

Am current up to my ears in wiring but had a break from it over the weekend and fitted the aero.

They turned out quite big so hope they do there job.

getting into the last few big bits before we give it a start. Test external oil system on my poor little drill. Over 70psi on spinup. Happy with that.

Exhaust all made
70% of way through the wiring but hopefully will have it finished this weekend
Fuel pumps all fitted. They are a tight fit but got it in there

New Dash made
Wiring getting close now.
New side panels have been made to make the cockpit air tight

Hi, I hear what you say about the office job and tooling around with cars to keep sane.

What is the power output of the motor now? Is there a particular class of racing?
Just wondered, because the V8 busa lump delivers some useable power in cars.
Interesting and cool car though !
Title: Re: Turbo Busa Car

Thanks guys. Yeah difficult staying motivated as when I spend a couple of hours on it at night you dont see lots for the time.

I went the turbo route mainly due to weight and cost. The turbo is pretty stock as we only race at 8psi though engine is built for over 350hp. The v8 would cost 10 times the turbo investment and then you need to spend a similiar amount on a racing gearbox. The car would weigh probably 40-50kg heavier

You are going to have a very rapid motorcar when thats done  :tu:

Bearing in mind I don't know your background with fast cars or bikes, but can I give you one genuine piece of advice for when the car is finished: Take time to recalibrate your brain. Your brain might need to speed-up to match the performance of the car/bike.

I can see your in for some fun !  :D
Enjoying your build !

Car ran its first race meeting and went better than expected. Motor comes out tonight for the big one to go in. The motor we've used for testing over the last 2 years is totally stock (other than the clutch springs) and put out 225hp at the rear wheel even though its had done 65k miles. Great little motor

Been very slack on the updates.

New built motor is in and as the driver is the slowest part of this package boost has only been increased from 5 to 7.5psi which has it around 250rwhp now. Biggest update is we've change the turbo from a garrett gt3082 with a hks hot side to a EFR6758. This setup is lighter (10lbs) and a little more modern.

Few updates on the car to but those little boring. We're finally going to bolt on some new slicks and see how it goes
