Hey man, what arm do you have now?  I am going thru a very similar deal with "Elite Custom Machine".  After not even 500 miles the bearings blew out of the jackshaft locking up my rear wheel on my way back from Bike Week.  The guy won't respond to me and lied to me.  He is still using a pic of my bike on his web page, after I told him countless times to remove it.  I am so sick of these dirt bags screwing people over!

I purchased a used 2006 gsxr 1000 with a 12 over swingarm with 360 tire from a dealer in PA that had an SB swingarm on it. I took my first ride with the bike and noticed a funny sound in the drivetrain while riding. took the bike to a shop that said the issue was in the driveline and the end result was the swingarm was not centered on the bike. end result was I had to replace the swingarm. I can say there swingarms are shit.

now that all the crappola has died down, here's a couple facts regarding eracer's issues:

eracer aka Ed Johnson, was told point blank his "standard" arm was not suitable for turbo-charged super-uber powered Busa racing machines.

he did it anyway.

anyone familar with fatigue failure in metal? check out the pix.
this is not a catastrophic failure; it's long slow fatigue.
(yeah, I'm a degreed engineer and I did the FEA. . . )

close as SB-Customs LLC can pin it down, eracer was running this arm for some two years in competitive drag racing before failure.

anybody run two years plus at 180mph+ drag racing without inspecting their running gear?

and, according to an eyewitness to the event, eracer aka Ed Johnson made modifications to the stock design.

SB Customs LLC offered to replace the swingarm, and power coat damaged parts, however:

eracer/Ed Johnson refused to return the (modified) damaged parts - wonder why?
insisted per "his lawyer" he was entitled to recover his travel costs, track costs, travel gas/tolls/mileage, entrance fees, breakfast sandwich costs, etc etc etc.
while engaged in competitive closed track racing,,,, yeah, that works.

eracer aka Ed Johnson made super big hay with the Better Business Bureau that SB Customs LLC refused to address his "problem" - he neglected to mention to the BBB the competitive racing bit, the two years of racing use, his demands for a new swing arm, new bike, new trailer to put it on, new truck to tow the trailer, new garage to store it and a new house to attached to the new garage, his refusal to return "defect" parts, etc etc
(okay, a bit over blown....)

so, bottom line, no - SB-Customs LLC does not support such unreasonable idiots.
otherwise, SB Customs LLC stands behind its products 100%

your a jackass from this post, first of all it wasn't on a turbo busa looks to be on a 1000 and second of all I very seriously doubt he was doing 180mph in the quarter on that particular 1000,and I very seriously doubt the rest of what you are speaking is the truth. :td:

That is a turbo'd 1000 and I'd say 180mph isn't unreasonable.

no dog in the fight but...
look at the picture, there is minimal penetration on the piece still welded to the arm
Looks like the piece separated at the weld, then tore the remaining metal
I would guess if litigation is involved the last thing anyone would do is give the evidence back to the manufacturer... I'm sure you will have the chance to see it in the future...

Title: Re: Stay away from SB CUSTOMS York PA..MY swing arm broke!!!!

eracer can whine all he wants.

SB Customs told him the arm was not suitable for turbocharged drag racing - he did it anyway.

SB Customs offered to replace the arm, he declined the offer.

for all the welding experts, the photo clearly shows the weld intact on both the cross member and the shock mount.  so much for cold welds.

check the bulge in the cross member.  it has been over stressed, repeatedly, and finally the weld bead itself fractured.

as to other arms breaking, etc. - interesting fabrication. wonder why SB Customs has not heard about this.....
SB Customs has supplied literally hundreds of stock, 240, 300 and 360 extended arms for all the GSXR, Busa and Kawasaki models.

it's not a  fake screen name

SB Customs sources the 6061 aluminum from a mill in Georgia, United States of America - just in case there's a Georgia, China

you were told by SB Customs the arm was not intended or suitable for turbocharged drag racing.  you did it anyway - now you want some one else to be responsible for your mistakes.

So you must be the only company ever who makes swingarms who claims your product is "not suitable for turbocharged drag racing."  :bah: Yeah, I'm sure people reading this are going to be knocking at your door wanting you to make a swingarm for them.

...back to F again

yes indeed.  and it will stay there.

as a company SB Customs has disowned the Better Business Bureau.

read their crap:  "... we don't know enough about this company, .... so we give them an F."

SB Customs LLC awards the BBB our coveted triple FFF award for most bull*hit on a stick.
we do not respond to their idiotic "complaints" anymore.
our ethics exceed their ethics by light years.

now, if a company chooses to "join" and pay them a couple hundred a quarter, then they'll consider the case.
most people call that extortion.

lemme see, he so loudly reported his version of 'truth' here in July of 2012, and it took him until October of 2013 to complain his link broke?

no.  not holding any water.

his complaints of "wouldn't do anything about it" are completely false.
he was offered a replacement with caveat - declined
he was offered a refund - declined

it's all posted here - he's admitted his deception.

everyone seems to insist that any swingarm that fits up to a bike must be be suitable for unlimited horsepower drag racing, off road use, Evel Knievel bus jumping, whatever.

something, again, broke.  perhaps there's an installer problem, as the link maker thinks?

in October 2013 the affected swingarm was "whole swingarm broke" but now in November 2013 that's not true; apparently it's made from some self-healing metal.

frankly I think there is a really serious question about some people's creditability.
as do our customers.

dunno that's between you two.   but as far as your statement about the swing arm not being for his use...

are there that many people who buy a stretched arm that's not for race/turbo/nitro use?

would it not be in the manufactures best interest to OVER engineer their product for safety\ legality issues?
have the swing arm designs been tested to failure?
does SB sell a different version that is for this use?
does  SB state on the website and warranty card that it's not for this use? is there a warranty at all?

as for bashing the BBB... agree with them or not that's just not very professional.
Title: Re: Stay away from SB CUSTOMS York PA..MY swing arm broke!!!!

My opinion is buy from someone who has tested and true equipment rather than the best deal around, especially when its our ass on the bike.  I have learned this lesson the hard way with other equipment which was luckily not an arm or something that could cause a crash.  I am luck enough to say my choice in arm was a decent one, at least from the strength and safety standpoint.  I also snicker at people fabricating arms but also stating not made for race use or whatever disclaimers are on there.  Do we buy these parts to park the bike in a museum??   :bike:

Besides the "he said she said" going back and forth here, I would trust Mike from SAE post on the first page and his opinion as one of the most valuable on what he noticed on the product, since he is a welder and machinist in his shop among other things.

rant rave babble and whine.

you were told not to do it
you did it anyway
you got another arm
according to you, you broke that one.
well, sort of.  in Oct it was all broken, by Nov it did not break.

>>your lying and trying explain why your  junk broke!!!!....
who is lying?
the swingarm broke because you used it in an application which exceeded the material strength
you were told not to do it - you did it anyway
and now you've broken another arm - soon you'll be full-time occupied putting companies out of business.

>>" for off road use only"
this is why SB Customs insists on talking to prospective customers.  some people cannot / do not read.

as to keeping this thread alive - definitely going there - you're doing a real fine job of showing the world your problems.

I weld for a living, and have been doing so for the past 22yrs...if my welds fail buildings blow up,people die. I can tell you with 100% certainty the weld pictured on the 1st page has absolutely zero penetration and would NEVER pass any bend or xray test. Its a shit weld,to say otherwise proves how little you or anyone else knows about the topic. Any dummy can buy a Tig machine and with a few days practice lay down half way decent beads, doesnt mean its a quality weld...

Yup..the welds looked good on outside...but no way to tell how well they burned in to other surface...funny thing is he writes about what i wrote (which is pretty clear) and not just admit his junk parts break..like i said before.after my incident i heard and seens pics from others whos SB arms broke.were crooked.one had two different adjuster blocks...one kawi one suzuki!!s.... Rim at sae outlaw all wobbly seen it with my own eyes and that arm wasnt straight either...

Rim at sae outlaw all wobbly seen it with my own eyes and that arm wasnt straight either...

I've seen several stock stretched arms that have never failed. Even after 10 effing years of hard drag racing. I guess the factory welds better than this douchebag.

If you knew his arm was not up to the task you shouldn't have modded it in the first place you dipshit!

Your welds did not penetrate and as an amateur welder even I can see that. When dealing with parts such as a swingarm, you best know your welds are 100% or have them xray'd before tackling something that could result in a death. Even if he wasn't drag racing, I would venture that arm would have failed after a few normal bumps and ruts in the road going a measely 40mph.

Sorry for reviving the thread, but I just was thinking out loud and realized I've had my SB-Customs swing arm installed on my bike for over 5yrs now and decided to search to see if others have used them after me...  Sad to see this, but mine is still solid as day 1 and looks just as good still.  I had a great experience with both Tom and Scott, got the chance to talk to both of them throughout the process.

For the record, I distinctly remember their site having a disclaimer saying it's not meant for drag racing or something to that effect.  I do not recall turbo being part of it.

Terry McIntosh..........and that is all I have to say about that.  From first phone call to my front door was 5-6 weeks. 2-6" over Pro-Lite are stock black powder coated, welds look as good if not better than factory, 1/4" thick alloy both sides. Top and bottom of arm are 1/8" thick. All bearing races installed and ready to bolt on, 5 lbs lighter than stock.

1425 to my front door.

QUALITY DOES NOT COST, IT PAYS.

To me, one broken arm out of 1,000 is one too many.  I guess that is an unrealistic expectation, at least from SB.  Not trying to make an enemy but we have a world-class welder here in town who taught it for his entire working career - Freddie - who won Sturgis in Harley Top Fuel recently.  I've known him for 20 years and his stuff looks a fugguva lot better than what I have seen on this thread.  He used to weld on my cylinder heads on my old Shovelhead strokers - both were 109 inchers back when 109 inch Hoggs were not that plentiful.

That is double ugly welding.  You can really tell by the two in-tact tubes that look like someone smeared bathroom caulk over them with their fingers and then spray painted it black. :td:

A picture is worth a thousand words, as old mama used to say, when she caught me in bed with my first cousin, a female, in case you were wondering.

You laughin' again? I don't think its' nice you laughin'.  See, my mule don't like you laughin', he gets the crazy idea you're "laughin'' at him........but if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I just might convince him you didn't mean it.

I ended up marrying her (no, we ain't hillbillies) on May 4, 1974 and we stayed together for 3 1/2 years..........until she finally realized what a horrible mistake she had made.

Outrageous sex, but different life goals...........she ended up with a six figure government job in DC and never married again.........guess I ruined it for her.  She has, I believe, now gotten close to retirement age and owns a beautiful home in Durham, paid for, and has close to a million stashed away plus her govt. pension.............when she leaves........according to her brother.

I ended up with Lynda, she has remained with me for 35 years now so I think this one is a keeper.  :tu:  Marvelous cook, fantastic mother and mate/friend, world traveler, great physical shape, and most of all..........................she still loves me, I can feel it and see it in all she does, don't have to hear it, just know it, just like I know the sun will rise tomorrow.  You cannot put a price on that - it is priceless.  :tu:

When I had reached to "low point" with the vodka/beer and valium, I took my pistol-grip 12 gage and blew three 00 buck rounds into my town house walls when we were separated.  That was the end.  She pulled me out of that shit and got me into rehab with the VA and I got "clean".  She did not have to do that.  But she did.

The woman saved my life.  :hrt:
