I lost a close friend today and I'm still having a hard time processing it. There are so many things bouncing around in my head and so many things to say. I have been around racing my entire life and he was the greatest racer that I have ever known. He looked at things differently than everyone else and this is what put him on that other level. His Mile racing was incredible: 200mph VMax, 1st Busa: 255 mph naked, 278mph faired, 2nd Busa 296MPH & 311 MPH in the 1.5.
I hoped that he would have stopped racing after his first accident but he had a plan and there was no changing his mind. He was ready to be done with racing and wanted to get "The Big Number" in the Mile first. I hoped that he would have done it this past Friday right out of the trailer. He would then sell the bike and be totally focused on operating his next project, the Houston Mile. He already had so many great ideas and things in place to make it the best mile event out there.
I asked him again Friday night if he was ready to move on and he said yes, this thing is too fast and is going to kill me. I regret not being with my friend on his last days here. :whaa:
Bill's sister asked me to share:

R.I.P. MR.311 You'll be missed, and always remembered!!
-
Oh my god :(
-
He made his mark on this sport in a big way for sure. I will miss him and his smiling face. Godspeed Bill !!
-
What a loss. Bill was an icon in this world.
-
I remember years ago the boys and I looking & talking about a V-Max that was getting ready to make some passes at Maxton. Little did we know then how determined Bill was to run some numbers no one dreamed about, not only on the V-Max but later on his 'Busa.
After watching him make history at Loring in '11 he was ready to move on to the magic 300 in the mile. He told me last year up there as soon as he broke 300 in the mile he was gonna retire the 'Busa and concentrate on the V-Max, said he had a wild set of heads to try out!
A 290mph pass was just not going to make it in his eyes!
What a GREAT guy that was truly humble. It was always a joy just to visit with him......he will be sadly missed. I feel so sorry for his family & girlfriend but also to his close friends. He was a wonderful member of our racing family.
Godspeed Bill, may you Rest in Peace.

you are right Tom.... he told Trillium friday he was mad when he got his 289mph time slip, he was hoping it was the big number..... he said it was like playing Russian roulette going that fast so many times...
-
Such a huge upset. Didn't talk to with him much, but a very intelligent and humble guy. A true legend.

Lost for words
Just too tragic
Ride in Peace Bill

Tom, VERY nice write up.
I know this has devastated you, and you have articulated what many of us feel.
Thank you. :thumb:
I
am
speechless.
Everyone:
Bob Sellers and Jimmy Lee are in Caribou handling stuff.
Bob and Bill had become very close over the last couple of years and Bob is crushed.
I don't know what we can do to assist Brutha' Bob but please be on the lookout.

Tom, thank you for the news. I'm shocked and saddened..........
I just talked to Bill at Wilmington last weekend. I'll always cherish the time we spent chatting under my umbrella while we waited for the driver's meeting. He always had time for my questions and was truly one of the finest men I've ever known.

A sad day. I was lucky to have Bill as a friend. I will miss him terribly. Many times, at Bonneville, Bill would come to me, as I was getting ready to run, and offer words of encouragement and sometimes advice.
RIP MY FRIEND

Get to work on the golden mile up above Bill. Hopefully I'll race with you there one day.

WOW, .
My deepest sympathy, to all Bill's friends and family. I met the man three times at my trips to Maxton. He was always nice and more than willing to help or talk about what he was up to. I remember being drawn to the vmax in 2006 and to the shopping cart/ mobile pit cart and bike stand the next time I saw him.
Being on vacation with family this weekend I saw the story on the ticker on Fox news as I was flipping this morning.

I'll never forget working on that, those moments and all the "what is he doing and how is he doing it" conversations....
Inspirational to say the least. I am glad to have been part of it, and you are solely responsible for the moments and conversations I had with Bill. THANK YOU
REST IN PEACE Mr. Warner

RIP Bill. Its very sad to lose people in this let alone a pioneer of it.
-
I always got a kick out of Bill quoting Mike Tyson, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth!"
Bill could out plan anybody, got all the right people on board and then executed it. He was not a conventional thinker.

Yesterday was really tough for me. Thanks to everyone for the PM's, emails, calls and visits, it really helped. Not much more I can add to the wonderous outpouring of affection for Bill, he was special to all of us. Here is a pic of Bill getting ready to ride my bike to the diner to celebrate his 311. He had a plate of french fries. I was looking forward to doing it again tomorrow, you know I think I will, 296 is damn fast. Leaving thursday morning... thanks Tom
we're leaving early Friday morning and staying at Knight's Inn, they also have a big enough restaurant for use to gather at Saturday night to swap Bill stories. The guy at the funeral home (Harry) knew Bill from when he was a kid. He told me to call Mary the manager of the Inn, she went to school with Bill. They both said it's a small town, perfect- we won't get lost :thumb:
-
I'm booked at the Knight's Inn, I'll get there Fri afternoon. Thanks Tommy.

I am sorry for the tragic loss of Bill.

I copied this from LR, it was excellently written by Scott G :tu:
BILL WARNER WAS A MAN IN FULL.
Only 44 years old, Bill Warner accomplished more in land speed
racing than most racers accomplish in a career – probably ten careers.
Most knowledgeable racers expect that Bill’s 311 MPH terminal speed
record in the 1.5 mile race will not be broken in their lifetimes,
and that Bill’s mile record of 296 MPH – set only hours
before his death – will be the same.
Warner, a marine biologist and college graduate was a
gentle tropical fish farmer in the Tampa Florida area.
Bill came late to land speed racing, beginning a racing career
of rocket-ship-like performance less than 10 years ago.
Always trying to reach the next level of speed, Bill was
never satisfied with “good enough.” Bill quickly proved
his championship strengths by taking the Texas Mile motorcycle
track record with an un-streamlined bike in 2010.
It was at that point that we all realized that everybody else
was playing catch-up ball, and that we were in
the final 2 minutes of the game.
The next year, Bill slammed down his earth- shaking,
and world-beating 311 MPH run at Loring.
In one single run, Bill became the first to break
270 mph, 280 mph, 290 mph, 300 mph and 310 mph.
In a time when the ultimate record was being increased by
Measures of 5 or 10 mph – or even 2 mph – Bill in one run
advanced the mark 50 mph.
And he wasn’t even done.
Bill brought to the sport, and to his pursuit of that sport,
a drive and intensity rarely seen in it’s combination of intellect,
scientific thinking, willingness to work 24/7 and to place
all his worldly assets in the service of his racing goals.
While doing this, Bill maintained an even temper,
rarely if ever raising his voice in anger.
He blessed his friends with his ready humor,
and he humored those that thought they were his competition.
In fact, Bill had no competition.
And he never will.
-
RIP Bill
-
I just heard. Great man, pioneer, terrible loss.
-
I only knew Bill through the forums. I felt that he was a tremendous person and obviously the man when it came to LSR. He will be missed for many, many years to come.

I only got to meet Bill a few times, but even with my limited interaction with him, I knew he was a great man. Last year In Loring I had a small chat with him about his bike and some of the stuff I was working on. I really felt like I was wasting his time, but he was happy to talk and answer questions, he was just that kind of guy. Very smart, very nice, very humble. I am glad to have met him. Hes down in the history books, nobody will ever forget him. rest in peace Bill

I never got to meet Bill in person. I did talk to him a few times on the phone back when he wanted to re-flash his previous bike to raise the limiter higher. I always liked the fact that he never just took someone else advice and always tried to figure things out a different way than "normal".
Being the only crazy turbo motorcycle guy that they know, today at work, my coworkers asked me if I knew the guy who wrecked, because they saw it on Yahoo, or CNN, or Fox, etc.
Each time I told them yes.
I felt like I did.
Each time also ended up being a 15 minute conversation about Bill and what he had achieved, how difficult it was to do what he made seem so easy, and how dedicated he was.
I'd bet most everyone Bill met felt like they knew him forever.
I've never even been to a Land Speed Racing event. In fact, I'm not even sure I have ever even met many folks who have, face to face. I feel like I know quite a few racers though.
Tat said, if you think I didn't get chills and have my eyes tear up the first time I heard "Ladies and Gentleman, We've just had the first motorcycle in history go over 300 miles per hour", you'd be wrong. In fact, I just watched it again. Got chills and a tear again too, and I knew exactly what I was going to hear this time.
When a guy you've never met brings a tear to your eyes (more than once), you just gotta say to yourself, "Man, that was one helluva guy."
None of us are going to do what you did Bill, but keep an eye on us when we go out and try.
We'll be sure to be smiling and saying Woohoo in our helmets every time we have a good run and better our own personal goals.

I'm just getting settled in from a 30 drive home from Loring. It was a long uneventful drive with plenty of time to think and reflect.
Not much I can say about Bill that hasn't been said here already. I'm truly blessed to be able to call Bill my friend. He was the most humble, gentle person you could ever meet. Until his visor was shut. Then it was all business! Serious business!! I never heard Bill raise his voice or get mad. He always made time for anyone that wanted to talk in the pits. He always made them feel welcome. Just this weekend alone I watched him at least 5-6 times stop what he was doing, put his tools down and take the time to talk with someone or sign something for some or the local school kids. I wasn't with him the entire weekend and I saw no less than 10 kids get a picture with him and his bike. He was happy to do it. He was a hero to those kids, and to me!
He didn't love all the attention. He was so humble. He told me Saturday, "Ryan, I don't like it when people treat me special. I'm not special." The fact is he couldn't be more wrong. He was special. He just didn't see it because that was just Bill being Bill. He was special to everyone who knew him.
As far as his racing goes...c'mon!! He was a man among boys! He was and still is light years ahead of ANYONE. Hands down, the undisputed champion of motorcycle LSR. Everyone here knows what he's done on the track. I don't need to go into all that.
Saturday night after the racing was done I had dinner with Bill. When it was time to pay he insisted on paying for mine and Jennifer's dinner. I asked him why. It was for a favor we had done for him in Ohio last weekend at the track that I had honestly forgot about. I argued that it wasn't necessary and that he would have done the same favor for me had i asked him to, but he insisted. I thanked him and told him I appreciated it. That was the kind of person Bill was. He remembered Ohio. I didn't. I was glad to be able to help him. He has helped me and others here countless times. I'm so thankful for that time I spent with Bill Saturday night at dinner. At the time it was just dinner with great friends. Now it's so much more.
Here is a picture of all of us at the track after Bill's 311mph pass. Jody and I were so excited that his feet aren't even on the ground. Bill said that this was one of his favorite pictures from that day. It's one of my favorites too. Look at the pure joy and awe on everyones face. It was taken by Rebecca Ebert.
RIP Bill Warner. I'm truly blessed to have known you.

I'm not sure if I ever met Bill, maybe at Bonneville, but I'm not certain if he ever ran there. I definitely remember being amazed upon hearing the speeds he had run at the paved LSR events in recent years.
I remember a phrase that I identified with, when I heard it: "Racing is life. Everything that happens in between, is just waiting".
I like to think that he wouldn't have wanted to go any other way. To die doing what you are absolutely passionate about, no matter how untimely it seems to those left behind, I don't know if we can ask for anything more than that.
My sincerest condolences to his Family and Friends.
RIP, Mr. Warner.

i'm a hard boiled old fukker.
NOTHING makes me cry, nothing.
But, Bill getting killed makes me cry.
Bill lifted me up, inspired me, his lil quips made me belly-laugh.
Now he's gone, torn from us.
I'm really angry.
FUK!
I cannot imagine what Bill's family is going thru,
What Jody & Trillium, Larry Forstall, Billy Shoemaker, Brutha' Bob Sellers, and so many others are going thru.
-
I just checked my e-mails before I went off to work this morning. What a shock to learn about Bill's fatal crash!
The weekend he made his world record 311 run, I had burned up the engine on my bike and was leaving Loring early. As I struggled to load my trailer alone, Bill drove up and stopped to help me. This is how I will remember Bill Warner; a humble World Champion who always had a minute to help someone.
Looking over the other posts, Ryan said it best "Not much I can say about Bill that hasn't been said here already"
Rest in Peace Bill.

"
Bill a very private, humble man who somehow attracted people to him."
Everyone who met Bill came away feeling that they had made a new friend.
He rarely cussed and I never heard him run down others, even when they richley deserved it.
Bill was a quietly passionate, complex man, a fish farmer allergic to fish
Bill was a true gentle man.
Everyone loved Bill.
There was no luck in Bill's racing program
His objectives were carefully defined.
And the steps needed to achieve his objectives were written down and he followed them
He wasn't obsessed, but he had total focus, and worked around the clock.
He achieved the highest level of success, but seemed embarassed by his success.
I was lucky to have Bill in my corner when I crashed last year.
He told the staff in the trauma center that he was my nephew, pointing to his blue eyes as proof
They let him in and he was able to get information for my wife & kids who were on the way.
I loved Bill and I will miss him

Well, I tried multiple times to post on the "rememberance" page to "share a story" without success.
We all have life stories which we were touched by Bill. Here's one of mine from the October 2010 Texas Mile:
I met Bill in 2006 at the Maxton Mile event. At that point he was hell bent to hit 200MPH on his Vmax. We exchanged some contact information since we both lived in the Tampa area and we attended sportbike related events together in the Tampa area once in a while.
A year or two later Bill purchased a Hayabusa for land speed racing. Bill broke several naked records with this bike then asked John Bullock and I to help him with a special fiberglass fairing project. John and I both thought he was crazy. The Hayabusa had engineered fairings for extreme speed and we assumed this guy who was used to racing a Busa without fairings was wasting his time modifying the fairings. Well, we were wrong because that motorcycle with the crazy fairings became the fastest Hayabusa in the mile!
Bill later asked me to help him at the Texas Mile event in 2010. I was honored that he asked me and I thought I would be proud to see those fairings that I spent an ungodly amount of hours on move down the track.
We had a great road trip on the way there. Bill has lots of stories and experiences. Also, he has quite a few land speed friends that we got to network with before and during the event.
I noticed that Bill was anxious during this event before he got to the starting line. I think it was because Bill wanted the track record pretty bad. I asked Bill can I do anything for you? Bill said yea, slap my back
.hard. I said ok. So, I slapped his back and off he went. He made a few runs and reviewed his logs. He then told me this next run is going to be fast. Sure enough the MPH board said 270.7 which was a new track record for a motorcycle!
That night we celebrated with Billy Shoes famous fajitas and beers. Well, most of us except for Bill. Bill had one beer and one plate of food then he was off to review his logs. Later that night Bill came to me and said can you help me install that fancy fiberglass plate? I said sure. Bill and I fabricated a radiator/heat exchanger block off made of fiberglass.
This project took us about ten minutes but felt like two hours when youre intoxicated. After everything was installed I said what is the purpose of this? Bill said Im out of boost so I have to spray the radiator/heat exchanger to get more power. I then said you already have the track record. And also why would you want to risk the motor for a few MPH? Finally I said I dont think this is going to work.
Any of you who know Bill are aware of his competitive nature. Bill then said to close out the conversation It WILL work!
The next morning we were up early to get a good spot on the race line. I wasnt real optimistic about Bills contraption that we attached the night before. As a matter of fact, I doubted it would do anything.
I slapped Bills back as instructed when he went to the start line and waited for the MPH board. This is the moment that Ill never forget for the rest of my life. The MPH board read 278.6MPH for a new track record. Everybody, and I mean everybody including those in wheelchairs were up celebrating this triumphant event! Also, I learned to never doubt Bill ever again!
Bill......you will be missed
-
Even though I didn't know Bill personally, I wanted to offer my condolences to Bill's family and friends.

Very well written short-story jgennaro. I really enjoyed reading it. Gives an insight to Bill's competitive nature. He probably couldn't wait to be done with his celebratory dinner and beer so he could go and analyze his logs.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill on the salt around 2005 or 06. He showed up with the nicest VMax I had ever seen. I mean that bike was polished and candy powdercoated top to bottom.
The bike was waaay too nice to be dipped in the salt. Bill was friendly and focused on going 200+ that week. If i remember he was just a couple mph short. A huge accomplishment for his first trip out.
Bill and I talked many times on the phone and I said to a few people " If Bill ever gets a busa we are all in deep trouble"
A year or so later he had a turbo busa!!! We were all going to get schooled and we did!
I remember Bill calling me when I was driving in northern BC and Bill called. We talked about the maximum naked speed I thought was possible. He asked was 250 out of the question. I told Bill "For me, out of the question , but very possible for you!"
He ran 255 naked a full 20mph faster than I ever ran naked.
Last year at Bonneville Bill and I talked about work, life and a little about racing. He was focused on running fast and doing whatever it took to get to his goals. I admired his drive and focus.
Bill taught us all that the impossible is possible.
Godspeed Bill, I know you are in good company and running on your next record.
Thanks for the memories and friendship.
Until we meet again,
J.

Thanks so much to everyone who attended Bill's service yesterday. I know he would be pleased with the turnout. Never has so much 2-wheel MPH been present in one room. I am very grateful to finally meet my "phone friends" and make many more acquaintences. (Somehow I missed you Tom G) Please put the Warner family in your prayers. The journey to healing is long but we can reach it. God Bless you all. LSL

Here is a perfect example of the people Bill had inspired and touched, most he never even met. This was sent to me from a customer of mine from Australia. His name on here is (03nos). Thank you for this!!
You cant understand
If your not there
The need to dare
To push that bike as far as she will go
Adrenalin rush is all you know
And Bill you where one of them
Who threw danger to the side
When you and the boys would go
On one of your many rides
Im sure god saw your M.P.H.
As you would do all the time
He must of thought you where really good
And wanted you by his side
To show them all in heaven
How proper M.P.H is done
So good bye MR BILL WARNER
Till we meet again
Go stir them up in heaven
With your crazy wild M.P.H.
Thinking of you all on this day
Cheers Russell

I saw Tim at MIR for the MIROCK race this weekend. At about 2AM, Tim was walking away from a Pit Party to head to his hotel, he gave me a wave as I stood at a grill cooking some steaks (yea, at 2AM...) and as he went past I couldn't help but notice he was wearing his Bill Warner 311mph shirt. I watched him until he disappeared from view under the single remaining illuminated light pole.
It was a nice end to a long day at the track.

At the time I wrote this service, I knew
that Ellen and I were not going to be
able to attend Bill's funeral.
I sent this to Walt Kudron, in hopes
that, with Walt's help, there could
have been one final "coming together"
with Bill before we wished him our
"final goodbyes"
I had hoped that this could have been
delivered at Bill's graveside remembrance.
Bill Warner’s graveside service
Today, we share a Gathering of Eagles,
the men and women who held the throttle wide open,
and who in spirit joined Bill on every run.
No-one but this group truly understands Bills drive,
and all that he accomplished in his unfortunately
all – too - brief career as the best LSR pavement racer
in the history of the world.
As we give Bill back to the earth,
we remember how high he flew.
Let him go to our friends who have gone before,
with our praise ringing in his ears for a job well done,
and thanks for his friendship lovingly given.
Let us form one last circle with Bill and remember him.
In this circle, may we also be joined by Debbie Dross,
Larry Forstall, Karl Gunter, Scott Guthrie and Billy Shoemaker.
Those friends of Bill, who – but for fortune – could
now be waiting for him, but who can still twist the throttle
in his honor.
One last time, let us all hold Bill’s one hand,
while Bill offers his other hand up, and is greeted
by our old friends John Becket and Dave Owen.
Bill: Go forward, with us knowing that you would
have made your last run, your greatest run ever,
at over 300 mph in the mile.
The memories of your life and accomplishments
will live in our hearts until we join you.
Thank you Bill, for filling our lives with smiles.
Thank you Bill, for making our world a better place.
-
Thank You Scott.
-
WOW!!!!
Scott, that is beautiful!!! :thumb:
-
Thank you, Fred and Karl.
At times like this,
if our friends
cannot speak for us,
who will do it ?
-
Scott I cold not have said it better. :thumb: :tu:

Very Nice

Thank you Scott.

Bill Warner Memorial Decal Donation info and link
"To the world he was Mr. 311, to those fortunate to meet Bill Warner he was more than just a number".
I despise the "why" this decal exists though it has helped the Warner Family understand the reason Bill loved LSR, the people. The Warner Family has been overwhelmed by the generosity and compassion of the LSR community, we call it "doing what we do".
Here is your chance to donate to the Warner Family and own a Bill Warner Memorial decal for a $10 donation. I am dealing directly with the Warner Family and the proceeds of each decal will be hand delivered. The decals are 5.5" wide and 3" high made from the highest quality vinyl, strong aircraft adhesive (for those blazing LSR runs) with a UV laminate to last outdoors for years. Quality and attention to detail, just as the legend himself would demand.
A donation of $10 covers postage for any quantity of decals. I will ship one (1) decal for each increment of $10 donated. Any amount in excess of increments of $10 will be considered a donation to the Warner Family. International supporters are encouraged to add a dollar or two to assist in the added fees. I will begin shipping early next week though it may take me a day or two after payment to get your decal mailed. Sorry, but Bonneville is less than two weeks away!!! I will have the decals and limited edition patches (see the separate post on the patch) at all the Salt events and if there are any left, Ohio and Mojave. I must thank my best friend John Brady for his donated time and talent creating a decal that encompasses all that was Bill.

Went to the movies last night with Trillium and we saw a preview of the movie Rush. A movie about the 1976 formula one season between rivals James Hunt and Nikky Lada.. a saying caught our attention that described Bill... it was " His fear for danger was superseded by his will to be the fastest" to us that was Bill... miss u buddy

I just heard about Bill's passing on another forum. I didn't know Bill personally but I was deeply saddened by the news. My thoughts and prayers are with Bill, his family, and all of his friends.
RIP

For whatever reason, LTA's Tim Kelly & I clicked from the 1st time i met him, so i am prejudiced.
Having him partnered up with Joe Daly, is awesome.
That said, i echo what Larry says, "Tim is a class act"!!!!

I am proud to announce the BILL WARNER MEMORIAL TOP SPEED TROPHY. This permanent trophy will stay with the LTA and have the name, speed and date engraved on it. The racer will receive a custom colored hat that will signify their accomplishment. This award is open to all vehicles (but let's not let too many cars get it !!). Designs have not been finalized but it will be ready for 2014. :tu: :tu: LSL

Excellent idea Larry! Thank you for making it happen. :thumb: Dean

Yesterday we where filling out our Christmas cards to get them ready to mail out, it was not the same this year... Filling one out to send to 100 9th st in Wimauma Florida had a different name on it this time... Raymond Warner , Bill's brother.. He is living there taking care of the farms until future plans are made... Miss you Bill, this Christmas without you will feel empty, we use to love going out getting you sometime "Canadian".... love always Jody :(

It snowed yesterday in Philly. I would have gotten a phone call today saying Hi, I'm wearing shorts what's it like up there? All in good fun. He touched us all in different ways but he touched us because he was Bill. A rare an unique personality sadly gone but surely never forgotten. Miss you Bill but so glad I knew you. LSL

We still love and miss you buddy! :(

I was looking at my permanent background picture of him today on the newly painted bike. Every dzuz faster handle was facing the back of the bike. So thorough he was. :tu:
-
I was cleaning up my missed calls / voice messages yesterday they seem to stack up way to frequently... I guess I'm missing to many calls... Anywho, I got to listen to acouple "Bill" messages I forgot I had. The last time he was in town he dropped by the shop and I took him to Hooters for some "Daytona wings". In one of the messages he was conveying how much he enjoyed the exposure to them and he added he had them again the next day for lunch..
A "Daytona wing" is just like any other hooters hot wing it just gets a little more attention after it comes out of the fryer. They season with hot sauce shake'em around the metal pan then they get dropped on the grill and basted with BBQ sauce.. They're Awesome and he loved them.. If you haven't had them give them a shot and think of Bill.
It was a good day! :thumb:
Miss you my friend.
