Casey Stoner began his return to the Ducati MotoGP team by testing its 2015 bike at Malaysian Grand Prix venue Sepang on Saturday.
The 2007 and '11 world champion has rejoined Ducati in a test and ambassadorial role, leaving Honda after a five-year association that began with his final two seasons of racing.
Stoner covered 54 laps and set a best time of 2m02.1s, seven tenths of a second off the fastest Ducati race lap of the 2015 GP at the track.

"I need some time to get back to speed and get the feeling back, because I haven't ridden a MotoGP bike for one year and any bike at all for six months," he said.

Ducati and Stoner have so far played down the possibility of any race appearances, and the Australian said his priority for now was to support frontline riders Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso.

"The Desmosedici GP has a lot of potential," he said.

If they're going to run the '16 bike I wonder why he hasn't been given a shot with it yet.  He's only ridden last years bike.

.......... and he was only 7/10s off the fastest lap on last years bike @ Mugello ! Thats not far off race ready.
I hope they give him a go. One website said they might let him ride as a guest like they do at most tracks where they invite local riders.
I'd love to see Stoner rattling some ego's at the front !

Stoner is going to be given some practise laps !

Casey Stoner will return to the MotoGP fold on Tuesday during the Sepang pre-season test, Ducati has confirmed.

The double world champion turned his first Ducati laps since 2010 in a private session at the Malaysian Grand Prix venue on Saturday, after which an appearance on an unspecified day during this week's official, pre-season test was announced.

Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone and test rider Michele Pirro represented Ducati during Monday's opening day and Stoner will join them on Tuesday.

Following three seasons as a Honda test rider after retiring aged 27, it will be the first time the Australian has shared the track with the MotoGP field since his last race, at Valencia in November 2012.

Stoner declared himself happy with his pace at the end of Saturday's running, when he had lapped within seven tenths of a second of Ducati's best race lap in the 2015 grand prix.

"We've got a lot of things to test and get myself a little bit more acquainted with the bike but generally I'm very happy," he said.

"The Desmosedici GP has a lot of potential, hopefully we can give the right input and help the two Andreas to try and achieve something great this year."

Ducati has so far played down the likelihood of Stoner's new role including wildcard race appearances.
