Title: Starter Kickback problem
Post by: gsx1300r_is4me on May 09, 2016, 02:27:43 PM
Hello guys I need some assistance. I had my starter go bad on me on Sunday. I didn't know how bad things were until I was on my way home and my bike suddenly loss power, my first thought was the bike sounds like I loss a cylinder or two. So I come to a light and I'm trying to keep the bike rev up so it doesn't cut off. All of a sudden I hear what sounds like someone threw some bolts in my engine. So now I have the "oh shit" look on my face, I slowly pull off from the light into a park lot and shut the bike down. The next day I take the starter out and the splines looked like someone grinded it with a diamond point rotary bit. The starter gear is f%$% as well. So now I need a starter/starter gear to turn the engine so I can at least assess what the deal is. Any feedback would be great!

Take a pic of the cover and starter area.. I would switch to 03 and newer stuff if you didn't crack your case

I've replaced the starter and got a heavy duty APE starter gear. I tried to start the bike and all i got was "Click". Long story short I put a break bar on the starter clutch. I rotated the crank and all of sudden the crank stopped and will not budge. I know for a fact I didn't dropped a valve.

I took the gear out, took the starter gear/starter clutch cover off and tried to spin the crankshaft, it spins almost 1 turn and stops like the pistons are hitting something or something else is going on.

Sounds like your motor is locked up, remove the starter clutch and see if there is any debris caught in the guides, if not my guess is that your tensioner went out...and the valves are hitting the pistons....

Time to pull the plugs and see if everyone is moving up and down... if they are... as the red queen would say... Off with it's head...
