Title: England : Shakespeare county raceway has closed.
Post by: HOS on May 18, 2018, 03:56:30 AM
Its very sad news that as of the start of this year one of the major UK dragstrip's has closed due to the whole area
being redeveloped for new housing.

So apart from Santa Pod, I don't think we have any other permanent drag strips left?

Was Santa pod due to noise complaints? ?

Drag strips like airports are built in the middle of nowhere and then civilization surrounds them.  Most airports last because they generate real money despite the noise but drag strips are mostly lost when civilization comes and never return.  One shouldn’t have to drive for hours to legally have fun with their cars and bikes.

Santa Pod is ok, business as usual.
But Shakespeare Raceway near to Stratford on Avon has closed because it is being redeveloped for new housing.
This is also why there is no Bulldog Bash 2018 which was held at Shakespeare raceway.

Cala are the developers.

One of the problems we have is that all the new housing developments have no facilities for people for leisure and they are shutting down places used for leisure and other activity places to build on the land. But people can't get loans to buy the houses because the cost of living has grown so much and wages have gone down a lot in real terms. The banks will not lend to buy houses under their own rules.
A home loan is max 4 x the joint earnings of two adults in work. But most houses are now 20+ x the joint wages.
We need low cost housing. not cheap shit housing thrown up and being sold for not much less than the normal selling price of normal quality housing. The housing crisis here is immense.

There and everywhere. It's actually a greed crisis.

Absolutely.
The UK and the US will always have a housing/schools/hospitals etc crisis while they keep letting millions in ever year.
So we just keep building more and more houses with uncontrolled immigration? Nah this country is already too densely populated.
They said last week that to make a dent in the housing crisis they would need to build 4 million houses like now!
That's two or three new cities!
Its a fuck up and a long time in the making.
There won't be any solution in my lifetime for certain.

The old WW2 airfields became race tracks or got built on.
Santa Pod is an example another is Elvington raceway.
The Jaguar Landrover and AM proving ground at Gaydon is an old airfield where I used to go and
watch bike road racing at club level before it got bought out.
Shakespeare raceway was partially still used as a runway for light aircraft.
The UK 200mph club in its peak of popularity used to hire one of the joint RAF/USAF bases for a day in east Anglia.
It may have been RAF Fairford? I'm not sure. Maybe someone else would know?
