Title: Busa project
Post by: zrxdean on April 30, 2019, 01:15:42 PM
The May El Mirage meet was cancelled, so I’ve had a little extra garage time on my hands. This past weekend I saw an ad for a Busa roller, and couldn’t resist. If I’m going to drive all the way to California with the ZX10, I might as well have 2 naked bikes to race, right? It even came with a sidewinder header.  I'm thinking alcohol and wet nitrous, like the ZX10.

So, I'm in the market for an engine. I still have Karl's Gen 1 ECU, reflashed by the late great DaveO. Or I could spring for a Gen 2 and get the extra displacement. Any suggestions?

thanks,
Dean

Can always add a Gen 2 crank to get extra inches, Gen 1 rods are stronger--bigger pins. Bummer about the may meet!

I didn't know that Jim, thanks. That makes the choice easier.

I've been watching eBay, and intact Gen 1 engines are selling for 1500-2000, does that sound right to you?

I'm hoping the June meet will be 2 days, it's a long drive.

Found a virgin 2002 engine for a good price. Needs a valvejob, but there's no road rash, and I don't think it's ever been apart. Even came with a Yoshimura header.

Now to get pistons and cams. I'm learning all sorts of stuff about Busa basics :)

Valve job, or just a good lapping? Most times that is all, esp with not a ton of miles.

Just saw the lakebed is closed again----

There's a fair bit of rust on the valves, engine has been sitting for a while. The engine is said to have 13K miles.

With stock bore pistons, I wonder how much compression I would need to make 400/380 cams work? Someday the engine might grow, I'd rather get the biggest cams I can swing now, these things are pricey.

Never mind, I think I will go with 2 intake cams, drop in pistons and some port cleanup.

Cometic thin head gasket, and Gen 2 cams have more lift/duration than Gen 1,

we have built several 600+ hp gen 2s with the 18mm pins

Jim, once again I thank you. Just bought a $50 Gen 2 ex cam.

Hey Scott, thx. For spray I’ll take all the (oem, cheap) rod strength I can find.

Dean get the inlet too unless you plan bigger
gen 2 when it came out was essentially the common mods guys were doing to gen 1's
stg 1 cams, longer stroke, lighter valve springs and Ti valves ,
any of this stuff will help a low $ build
maybe use the gen 1 springs on the Ti valves for the Nos

Thanks Greg, for now I'm going to try the Gen 1 intake and Gen 2 exhaust. I think this will give me around 106/109 lobe centers with the OEM cam sprockets, but I will check.

I cleaned up the chassis, replaced the head bearing, refreshed the damper, mounted a GSXR1000 rear wheel, front and rear brakes, dog bones. I had the short kickstand, lowered fork, clip ons and rearsets from Greenie. I have an external Walbro pump, regulator and fuel cell that will go on next.

I ordered ARP studs, but after a week Jegs tells me it will be another month, argh.

did you try calling ARP?
And got caught out with those rearsets at BMST as FIM does not allow pegs that do not fold, not sure about everyone else as they were on Dave Scott's new bike.

Nothing in the SCTA book about folding pegs thankfully. Thanks Jim.

I haven't called ARP, but they list for $290, while Jegs wants 180. I may cancel and call around, but I'm in no huge hurry.

I see the lakebed is closed this weekend, I hope things dry out soon...

No rain yet, fingers crossed.    https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/getobext.php?wfo=sgx&sid=EMRC1&num=48

I found a shop with the studs on hand, should be here next week.
