Title: 1397 won't start when warm

I just got my motor running last week but now it won't start when warm. It turns over but too slowly to start.
It starts fine when cold although it may be turning over a little slowly then too. Do I need to get a higher CCA battery since it's a 1397 or is my battery getting old? The battery sat for about 7 mos. before I put it back in the bike. It's the stock battery and I haven't replaced it since I bought the bike in Oct. of 2000.

I'd certainly suggest a new battery.  The Honda one has more amps than the stock one, a battery is a lot cheaper than running the risk of hurting the starter.  I don't know the part # of the one that fits the Honda but a number of people on the board have said they are using it so someone will be happy to post it, I'm sure.

I ran a search for the Honda battery, here's what I found:

Yuasa YTZ14S exclusive for Honda -- part # 31500-MCR-D02. Approx $116.00. Has 30 CCA more than stock Busa battery and fits in battery box. This battery helps but you may need a 24v setup for a high compression big bore motor.

I hope I don't need the 24v setup, it sounds complicated and I get real nervous doing electrical work.   (http://images/smiles/converted/no.gif)

When u are starting it hot try to crack the throttle open about quarter of turn and push the button.. if that does not work u need a new battery........the motor may still be tight from assy needs to be broken in....  (http://images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif)

Ditto crack the throttle and get a new battery to make sure,And don't let the button go untill it starts..

The motor it still tight,put some miles on it..

When I had my 13-1 1397 it started right up even on hot days..

What do you have the cams set at?

I need to get in touch with you,and did you post any pics of your bike with the new paint yet?

I ordered the Honda battery today. I called 2 places but neither had it in stock so it should be here by Tuesday, or maybe this Friday if I'm lucky.     (http://images/smiles/converted/smokin.gif)

My 1397 acted this way when hot. I ended up putting a 2nd OEM battery in the tail compartment and hooking it all up with #2 cable. I have not had any difficulties since. Opening the throttle a bit while cranking,as was mentioned earlier, does indeed help.Cam timing set to a low intake # will make starting more difficult due to earlier intake closing. My Carpenter cams are set at 110/110.

The battery didn't come in Friday so I'll have to wait til' Tue. to see if it does the trick.
After I drove it today, I cracked open the throttle a little to restart it and I think it turned over a little faster, but it still wouldn't turn fast enough. I didn't wanna keep on trying because I've heard too many starter horror stories.   (http://images/smiles/icon_eek.gif)

You might want to move the exhaust cam a little bit to give the cams more overlap.

That will bleed off some cylinder pressure.

I put the new battery in today, drove it for awhile, waited 15 minutes...and it STARTED!!

I checked the voltage on my old one when I pulled it and it read 12.4. After returning from the drive with the new one, the new one read 13.2. I wonder if my old battery was a little tired?  (http://www.superkaos.com/phpbb/images/smiles/o.gif)

There are several solutions, but first you should figure out what your problem is

Bad battery, or to much compression

What pistons do you have? 12.5 to 1?

What are your cams set at?  to high and you make midrange power but bad top end, and won't start for shit.
