Title: Oil change Hot or Cold
Post by: Commuta_Busa on November 18, 2005, 01:46:51 PM
I wonder how many people start their engines, get it to temp, and then drain the oil

vs

just letting the oil drain after it's sat for awhile

me personaly, I'm not in a rush so I drain my oil when it has sat for awhile...

Is there any difference other than speed???

I do cold after it sits awhile, more of the old oil in the pan instead of in the motor    I could be wrong

Hot. I believe it has more suspended particles. Correct me if I am wrong, I am always here to learn. I let it drip a looooooooooooooooooooong time, sometimes overnight.

I agree plus the oil is thinner and flows (drains) better

One of the first cautions in the manual states" If parts replacement is necessary, replace the parts with Suzuki Genuine Parts or the equivalent....

So where are those part numbers for the Suzuki Hayabusa Ghetto Stage 1 turbo system?!?!?

I usually drain the oil while the engine is cold, then start it and let it run for 10 minuits to get the rest of the oil out of the engine

I always seem to find more small particles in the oil after draining and revving the motor to redline for a min of 2 mins.  My method kicks your ass...!
ps,,, COLD , your motor was hot when you last just it off probably.  sj

It doesn't really matter whether ya do it hot or cold or whether ya let it drip 10 minutes or 10 days.  :duh:
Title: Re: Oil change Hot or Cold
Post by: TheBull350 on November 18, 2005, 08:56:19 PM
i alway's did it cold, my thinking was that the particles would settle or drain back to the pan during the cool down time while the warm/hot oil was draining back to the pan. thus leaving more dirt in the pan for the drain  :?

But as GND111 said: THAT'S WHY WE HAVE OIL FILTERS!

(he does have a VERY good and valid point here!)

so now the question: Is it worth the debate?

Drain the oil hot, THEN run it again to get the rest out!??

That's a debate on it's own. Interesting to see if the rest comes out. Like the oil in the cooler etc. I know there is always about 1/2 liter left over from an oil change. Curious if you can do any damage with most of the oil in the drain pan and not in the bike??  :?

I always drain it hot. If you did it cold I think to much would stay behind as a coating on all the parts.

I do that as well, drain it hot, then start it up after a minute for a couple for like 10 seconds and shut her down to drain even more out. Then i still let it drain for like 20 minutes.

I usually time the oil change after my last ride on that oil run.  Pull the drain and let her drip while im changing the filter.  If I have other things planed, I do them also.  When Im all done working on the bike, I will plug it and refill with the new oil..   The drip, drip to the last drop does nothing in my opinion, but I fill better about it like most do.

Drain it warm.

When it's cold the sludge sticks to the bottom of the pan and stays there when you drain it. When it's warm, the sludge is suspeded in the oil and drains with it.
On a bike, the sludge also sits in the clutch basket.

Don't beleive me? Pull your oil pan after draining your oil cold, you will find sludge in the bottom of the pan.

Danno,
If you pour a few gallons of gas in the case, it strips that sludge right off. rinse the gas with warm, soapy water....then refill with oil. This is the most effective way to destroy your motor, without any sludge worries.

100% correct.  We pull our pan all the time and you can be gauranteed that cold oil leaves the sludge behind.  Cold oil always comes out looking much cleaner and that's why.....

I do it hott after letting it run on the stands for about 5 minutes... If you are running thicker oil, this will help get the oil warm and somewhat thinner consitancy. Then drain this will allow the oil to flow out better then cold oil which would be thicker. Thus taking more time to drain and tend to be more sticky and stick to parts instead of coming out... I replace the filter with a OEM suzuki filter with the oil change. I also change my oil every 12-1,500 miles. Just to make sure. The manual says not to replace the filter till 10k LOL yea right why would you wanna put new oil into a dirty filter. IDK either...

drain the oil hot because any particles in the oil will be suspended in the oil and will flow out instead of staying in the engine. also i have heared that as long as 80% of the oil is drained (because some will remain in the oil cooler in the clutch plates and even a small amount in the pan an head) from the engine that is sufficient, assuming you don't have serious contamination such as antifreeze, which is beyond the scope of a normal oil change anyway.

Well not so hot as you burn yourself working on it, but the oil cooler is really pushing it, something you may want to do as long as you got the time, instead of the oil cooler is drain oil and remove filter, drain filter put it back on put 2 or 3 qts of cheap oil in fire up the motor let it run for 5 or 10 mins, then change oil & filter and use your good oil, its extra screwing around but your oil will stay cleaner a lot longer
