Title: Theory, weight vs hp vs mph.

Looking so see what changes you have seen in your mph with changes you made.

Trying to get a idea, or rule of thumb per say of weight vs hp vs mph on bikes.

Something like 10 lbs or 2 hp= 1 mph.

I really wonder what the effects of weight on drag raceing bikes are, I suppose ET could be good to know, but that varies so much it might be hard to narrow it down.

I weight 230 now, want to get down to about 195 or so, so would 30 lbs be good for 3mph?

Ok lets see what you all think.

I've been told ~4hp = 1mph, and that seems to be pretty accurate going off of results I've personally had.  Can't help with the weight.

on zx12 i rode the owner was 200lbs and me 130lbs made up about .5 difference. cant remember mph but i think is was 6-7 mph difference

Some additional points

"Add lightness to improve performance"
Losing body weight is the cheapest and ultimately the best 1st move.
The location of the weight removed is also important.

I agree on body weight. I am just trying to get a rough idea of these numbers from ppl that have made changes. Since I didnt dyno my bike before and after the changes I dont know for sure how many mph diff was made per hp. I am going to monitor the weght close and see what the difference is, and the hp from now on.

I would say lowering weight in certain areas will help more than others.
 if you can lose 10 or 15 lbs of rotaional mass you''ll see more gains than losing the same on just mass.
 HP is lost through drive train, if you can improve drivtrain, more HP will get to the ground. plus losing overall weight.
Wheel weight, chain weight, non-oring, ceramic bearings, tire weight, synthetic oils, free up brake pads, etc.
 I heard 10lbs mass=1hp,  dunno if thats accurate.

on my bike he has ran 5.8's@126 I have went 6.2's @ 119
Before I was turboed he wasl about 4 tenths quicker than me and about 5 MPH better in the 1/8

I remember 25lbs per .1 also but I thought that was related to drag race cars...

For average drag racers, 20-25lbs = .10 & 1mph. More realistic.

 I seem to recall Robert Suprenant and some others posting that 25lbs = .1 in the 1/4. Also 25lbs = 2mph and 2mph = .1

 Seems to be inline with what a few have posted already. I've never seen 1mph = .1. Two mph is more like it.
 Not really sure on the hp though. From what i've seen, 5hp would make a couple of mph. I've seen a few bikes put a pipe on and pickup 10hp and they usually pickup 4-5mph in the 1/4.

Remeber when they put on a pipe they pick up hp but they lose 25 or so lbs as well.

I ran 108 pre Pipe, and 113 with the BDE and supplyed map

so that is 5 mph, 1 from weight and 4 from hp ? at 2 hp per mph that means I would have picked up 8 hp

I think that sounds about right.

 Could be. I don't think you loose 25#'s going to a full system. I think you loose something like 15 or so which is still a good bit. Could be wrong though. I have a full stk system that i can weigh to see where its at. I believe the Brock/Hindle weighs 8-10#'s???
 I think that the formulas are close enough to use as a general rule of thumb.

I know the BDE system weighs like 8.5lbs. I belive someone said the stock is close to 32 lbs. plus pair is like a lb or so. I dont know for sure, just going off memeory.

in the qtr Hotrod is 9 mph faster than I am, I outweigh him by 95 lbs. IMO 10lbs is 1 MPH (of course I am also a lot larger than him when it comes to trying to get out of the wind, so that could have some effect on it.

See that brings up another thing I was thinking about. My jacket is nice, its one of those Joe Rocket 3 in 1's great summer jacket. It grabs the wind bad though. So I am thinking this year at some point I might get some leathers, It will be interesting to make some back to back runs with different gear on and see if there is a mh difference.

20 lb = 1 mph is what I come up with
3-4 h.p. = 1 mph
