Quick Question: Is stock rear tire tubeless?
« on: November 24, 2002, 11:51:00 PM »
Just found a nail in my rear tire, sucks big time.  Does the stock tire need an inner tube?

Thanks for any info.

How about plug, then a new tire.  You can have excellent results with a plug, but for a motorcycle the risk and cost of a new tire do not match.

Progressive makes a great kit for emergencies.  Comes with plugs, and CO2.

Forget the plug man !! Just buy a new tire. That way you wont have to worry about the plug ever leaking or any dramatic results that could happen from a possible plug failure and you loosing airin a turn or at high speeds... Don't put a price on your life!!! a tire is just a mear $$ amount .
FACE YOUR FEARS, AND LIVE YOUR DREAMS.      It's better to have it and not need it... than to need it and not have it!!!

Plug Patch( not plug) plus a tube the only true way to repair.

True! I don't know how long you have been doing this .  But lets say your riding along a dark lonley hi-way and bam a f#$k'n flat (nail) .  A tubeless you can fix onsite easily!  What about a tire with a tube in it ?              Get a kit for a temporary fix is what I say.

I only have experiences with plugs on a car tire.  Just curious, but why can't they patch a motorcycle tire like a car tire.  Or can they.

It's not that you can't plug a motorcycle tire.  Its more of a safety issue.  Even on cars, some plugs will leak.  The question is do you want to risk that on a motorcycle for any longer than you have to?

In a pinch, plug it, get home and order a new tire.  If you must, ride it plugged until the new tire arrives.  But, why test faith for the cost of a new tire by riding on the plug until the tire wears?

I think that's what everyone is saying.

But can you actually use a patch that goes on the inside of the tire?  Or is that not safe.

A patch from the inside is better than a plg (if done right).

I buy tires from guys off here that have nails / screws in them and fix them for myself.  I work at a tire store and use the plug patch combination units (very nice stufff).  I dont particularly like just regular plugs, they might start a real slow leak one day, but they dont magically come flying out.  If you can make a patch come flying off magically then you are a true magician.  I understand the guys who dont want to take any chances, but everytime you ride on the road you take the chance of hitting something with your tire to cause a flat.
