My 48 LED Kanji Mirrors
« on: April 09, 2007, 08:57:11 PM »
I've been seeing pictures of these around for a while on the forum and no one makes them so I took a stab at it.  I decided fit 24 red 20000mcd LEDs inside each mirror.  They aren't typical red LEDs either(8000mcd), they're 1.5x brighter as well.  These are the same LEDs I used to make my 122 LED UFO tail lights.  All went well with popping the mirrors out, but putting them back in is a PITA.  I drew/traced the emblems in CAD and printed them mirrored and to the exact size I wanted.  Then traced it the emblems out with an exacto knife on some vinyl sticker I had laying around.  I put it on the back of the mirrors and only left just the Kanji exposed.  Then broke out the the $15 sandblasting gun I bought and sandblasted the back.  Peeled the stick off and popped them back in the housings.  Wired up the bike so that the wire comes right up the middle of the mount and drilled a few holes (none of which can be seen) so no wires are showing.

Total LED Count...so far
122 red 20000mcd LEDs    - UFO Undertail Taillights
168 orange 8000mcd LEDs - Rear Tail Signals
40 switchback LEDs           - Front Parking/Turn Signals
7 blue LEDs                      - Raptor Shift Light
48 red 20000mcd LEDs      - Kanji Mirrors

TOTAL: 385

Here is the post you were talking about. You can order them from there.

MIRROR KANJI LED TURN SIGNAL MOD - Have Your Mirrors Done Today!

 Suzuki Hayabusa OEM Mirrors ONLY

Beside getting your ride to stand out by having custom mirror turn signals, they are installed in the outermost area of the motorcycle and at eye-level of most cars, which increases your turn signal visibility and helps drivers in your "blind spots" notice your signaling. Mirrormod utilizes your Hayabusa OEM mirrors fitting them with super bright LEDs (which are brighter than most tail lights), that are mounted inside your mirrors, therefore they attract more attention.

Since the lights in these mirrors are LEDs, the system has an additional benefit: LEDs light up about a fifth of a second quicker than incandescent light bulbs. That may not sound like much, but at 65 miles per hour (105 kph), your car covers 19 feet (5.8 m) in a fifth of a second. LEDs could give someone the extra time and space needed to avoid hitting you.

mirrormod details:
Price - $80 per set (includes shipping mirrors back via priority insured mail)
Livetime Warranty - as long as you own the bike
Quick Turnaround Time - not more than 72hrs (excluding weekends and holidays)
All connectors, straps needed for installation included
Fast installation time - ride ready in less than 15min - Installation Guide included
Available in AMBER, RED, GREEN or BLUE color
Additional Customization Services (available at extra cost)
Custom Logo/Image engravement
Gear Position Indicator Integration
100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee
Send Private Message to Sangai or email service@mirrormod.com for shipping / payment details !

Here are a couple of pics of the mirrors:

Yep that's the one I was talking about! I even spoke with him a good while back about getting mine done, but I read some where that he was getting harassed by some company and had to stop making them??

Oh well, I can say I made my own and learned a few things along the way... Plus saved some $$$ as well. :)

Just used a heat gun to heat up the outside of the housing until you could pop it out. :)

Sangai is the man to get these done, wish I'd known he still did them before I took a stab. :)   Oh well, like I said at least I can say I did them myself! :)

For the etching I drew/traced the emblems in CAD and printed them mirrored and to the exact size I wanted.

Saving mirrors for the same projects myself.

The hard part is finding OEM mirrors in perfect condition! New ones even have freakin marks?

48 red 20000mcd LEDs      - Kanji Mirrors

Where would I buy some LED's like that, and how much should they cost?   I have a close friend that works at mouser.com, maybe some one could look on their website and tell me the right part number.  So many options I'm not sure which ones would work best.

Thanks for the help.

I used these from mouser.com on mine, but since I've done mine they've come out with even brighter ones! :)

Thanks!!!   She had 4,000 of them in stock, so I'll have no problem getting 50 of them tonight :).  Now I need to find a wiring diagram.  Its been a while since I put a simple circuit together.  Any idea where I can find one?   Also, did you put anything over the back of the mirror?   I tested it out with some LED lights that you replace a tail light with, hoping that would work, but I can see each bulb shining though.  Is this just because they are not bright enough?

What size Resistors did you use?  I ordered some LED's and I'm planning to put it together this weekend.  They were the same LEDS you used from mouser.   I plan to do the same setup. 24 LED's.  Thanks for your help!!

How much would you charge me to do 2 sets? Also- could you put a set on the front of the mirrors, so I can do 'something else' with the stock signal lights?

Haven't tried this yet but it sounds pretty straight forward.  They look great!
