good bike GPS?
« on: April 18, 2007, 01:13:43 PM »
I'm thinking about mounting a GPS to my biek to track top speed. I started to look on ebay, but there are a gazillion models, many with more functions than I need.

You folks have a favorite, basic GPS that will serve my purpose?

Thanks,
Dean

Just bought a gently used Garmin Etrex with car and USB adapter for $73 delivered. Gotta love ebay. -Dean

Garmin makes great little GPS's - It survived a roll over but the wind shield bit the dust. The Tiger Racing gauge pod looks real good.

I have the Garmin Map60D. high end model thatI got for multiple purposes. only issue I had was during high speed runs vibration would cause it to shut off. I rubber mounted the mount to the triple trees and it solved the problem.

glad to see Jen's excursion wasnt too bad then.
she doing OK?
and how's that dynojet screen working? can you see anything at all while in motion or is it too small to read?

garmin forerunner. very small with big numbers and a velco wriststrap that with the extension will fit around most gauge clusters.

Hey! I was just going to say the Etrex works good.  I bought it to go  geocaching when I lived in Hawaii, but it mysteriously ended up on the motorcycle when I moved back to Texas.

The LCD Screen is practically useless to look at at speed. It does have some little value as a data logger used in conjunction with a DL32. Jen is doing pretty good, wrist still hurting a little. Hope to get her back on the bike drag racing next month. Yes that is Jen's GPS that she unknowingly donated to the cause.

I have a Garmin III Plus that has been used regularly, on bikes since 1999.  I also have a Garmin Quest that is about 2 years old that seems to be bulletproof also.  I use Ram mounts specific to each model.  I've used both of them, at different times, on the Busa and on my KLR650 thumper.  If they will take that old shaker they will take most anything....

I am very happy with my Magellan Explorist XL, large color screen, direct route mapping works well, SD card slot. There maybe better ones out there but I can take this on all my vehicles and do hand held as well.

You might want to read this about the Etrex(4 pages of good and bad) here.
http://tinyurl.com/3xrvql

I got mine of Ebay($80 with patch cord), and it's got the joystick issue(selection function sporadic at best), that will make you wish you had a window on your bike to throw it out of.

Guess I'll eventually tear into it and see if I can wire a remote selector button to it(or throw it in the "what a waste" drawer?

I like the Garmins I have used, they are great..here is the new bike, I hope to run 194 mph on it in a a week and a half at El Mirage..it's a bunch of left over parts and a custom one off system from Barry at Velocity with an intercooler!  The welding on the new headers are phenomenal, it looks like robotic welding!
