Deck height
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:14:56 PM »
Starting to assemble 1397 Je kit that i purchased from APE. Base gasket is a stock OEM Suzuki gasket. I will be using a cometic .030" head gasket. I installed base gasket and snugged down cylinder with spacers and washers. Zeroed deck bridge on top of cylinder. In center of piston I measured -.008". While rocking it I measured a minimum of -.007". On outside of piston I measured -.005" and a minimum of -.004" while rocking it. Does this sound right?

Here is my zero with it across block.

Measured -.008" across center without rocking it

Edge of piston without rocking it measures -.005"

Edge of piston rocking it measures a minimum of -.004"

That's tight, I like it. Should make good power  :thumb: :thumb:

Did you polish the pistons?

Yep, I got rid of all the sharp edges and couldn't stand them all scuffed up so i polished them.

Is there any extra HP in polishing the top of the pistons ? I heard there is none  :? What are the benefits ?

Looks nice by the way  :thumb:

Also i like to use the solder method ! no need for spacers or washers nothing extra. Check the Brock's site ! Its called MAC ! if you want to use that method however you will need a good digital caliper gauge. I think thats the right name  :D

Good luck with your build  :thumb:

Polishing the tops will build more heat. and will also cause dentition.

Sure wouldn't want anything like that to happen. So i went back in and scuffed up the pistons again. Thanks Spaz :thumb:

The polished combustion chamber surfaces would reflect the heat, it would make the engine more thermally effcient, not transfer as much heat to the piston. The polish would help keep the deposites off the tops for awhile.
So what is the piston to bore clearance?

The benefits of taking off those sharp edges around the valve pockets by polishing are large . Taking that teet down thats dead center on the tops of most forged pistons is needed as well because it's sharp. Polishing the entire top does not hurt a thing and is generally good build practice when one has the equipment to do it the easy way .

As icrman just posted , it also delays carbon sticking .

I agree , they "did " look nice

Did some surfing on the net and couldnt come up with a definate answer on polishing the tops. Some people are for it and some are against it. Some people bead blast the tops some polish and some scuff them up. Who knows? I am just going to leave them alone i guess. They are still pretty smooth, I scuffed them with 1000 grit.

Cosworth pistons come polished from the factory. Mahle come coated. Two of the best pistons in the world, two different outlooks. Next time I am in the BMW F1 clean room I will check.      LSL

Some say that you want a light coating of carbon to reflect heat. I dont know, now i am confused. :? I still have the head off and wouldnt take much to put a shine on them, since i only scuffed them with 1000 grit.

They are fine as is. I think more builders glass bead than polish. And more do think a light coating of carbon helps ( Gives more compression for sure.) Your deck is good and will make power safely.  LSL

It almost looks like  the thin area around the intake valve relief is still there? Could be the picture, but defiantly want to knock that down so not sharp...I wish I woulda known that on my first install of j.e.'s :?

I know what you are talking about. But how much should it be taken down? It looks like it can be taken down quite a ways and still be thin. How much should be taken off? Or should it just be "rounded"?
