Zumo 550
« on: November 21, 2007, 03:58:39 PM »
Guys, about to purchase a zumo 550... What is the best way to stem mount it?  I dont know that it comes with any way to do so, but other aftermarket companies make mounts.  Which is the best and does anyone have pics and/or a good tutorial about installing it  so that it doesnt fly off?  Thanks for any help!

Comes with a pretty good mounting kit, but I had to get a little creative to mount mine. 550 is very nice, love mine.

Techmount makes 2 versions for the busa:

first is the stem mount that fits in the 13mm stem hole of the busa.  (this is the one i have)

second is the control mount version which bolts to the handlebar pinch bolts.

here is a link to the site.  i think they make great products.

this is just my opinion.

The tech mount stem is the one I have chosen, is there anything special you need to do to get the Zumo to bolt right up to it?

i have the little garmin etrex on my stem stand attached by superlock velcro.
sounds fishy i know but it works great and holds really really well.

you can get it from Radio Shack.  here is a link to that product.

it works great.

then again,
they (Zumo) may offer a better alternative than my idea.

my buddies magellan is held on his xx blackbird (stem mount) by regular velcro and its held for the past 2 or 3 years.
preparation for the surface before sticking the sticky stuff is the key. :P
just a thought, not necessarily a solution.

For some reason I thought that the Zumo came with a black plastic cradle looking piece that had holes in the back that could screw to the plate?  If not I have seen this before, let me find a photo that I can post!

hey,
if they come with holes in the backing plate (that can attach to the stem stand plate) that would be a perfect mount.

(the superlock or velcro still offer some resistances to vibration however)

but the stability of the hardmount could yield to a safer arrival of the zumo.

Says that this hard mount with the holes comes with the GPS?  Also, you make a good point with the vibration being a factor which is why I have already purchased rubber grommets to put between the plastic bracket and the Techmount stem plate!  Good stuff, I am making progress, keep the ideas flowing guys!

The 550 comes with 2 Cradles. 1 for the bike, one for the car. It also comes with handle bar mount, which doesn't work good on the Busa...you will see if you try to mount it that way. I mounted my cradle to the Tech Mount Double Stem Stand.
