K3 Vs. K5+ Wheel Weight?
« on: November 16, 2008, 02:34:26 PM »
I have a 2003 GSXR 1000 front wheel sitting here. It has the rotors and a Shinko 120/60/17 tire on it. My scale shows about 26.5 lbs.

Does anyone know how the later model wheels stack up to this, weight-wise?

Thanks.

Shane

from what i have been told the 05-06 wheel's are lighter (not sure about the 07-08 but i would guess so) the rear is a direct swap, using the spacers from the 03-04, and the front is not, i cant remember what the diff is, but i know it is possible to use the front from the new modle. i dont have those newer rims on i bought 2 used magnesium rims on put them on my 03 1k  :shock:ohhhh damn did it change how fast the bike turns, i did the same thing to my old 1100 and with the same result only i had PM race light rims i put onit. i realy need to do a bare rim weight test some day when im swappin tires though. to put this on paper. i can say on the rear rim with a stock rotor on the stock rim and a completely burnt off on all sides pilot power race med compound tire on it, compaired to a marvic magnesium rim with a galfer wave rotor and Ti bolts and a almost brandy spankin new Bt014 tire on it, the mag rim set up felt a bit lighter using just my hands holding them both at the same time, realy the only good way to test would be to have the same tire on or no tire at all and weigh them both, i can say though from swapping the tires out on back to back rides it is very very noticeable during the ride, the bike is waaay more flickable from side to side and the front end is very ehhh wheelie happy now, well like it already wasnt but not its just stupid

I'm looking to do the same type of swap but with a 04 1000. From the previous post it looks like it can be done but what exactly needs to be done in order to get the front swapped also? Any one??? Also does any one know the exact weight of a 05-08 gsxr 1000 rear rim. I know that the front is 9.3lbs without a tire and rotors.....

To use a 05-06 wheel on a older model, you will have to use the 05-06 rotors.  You will also have to make spacers to put between the caliper and where it bolts onto the fork.  This is because the newer rotors are larger than the older ones.  Without the spacers the caliper won't bolt up.  Besides this the wheel should bolt right on.

01-04 wheels weigh the same,
as they get newer they doget lighter

I went to 07 wheels to cut a good bit of weight...
I had a 02 5.5in rear wheel and when i went to a 07 6.0in rear wheel and shaved 3 lbs
