Bad Rattle/Knock in bottom end, NEED some serious opinions
« on: January 19, 2008, 09:15:02 AM »
Hi all,
1st post,  :( shame its a problem

had my busa about a week now, LOVE it to death,

But....

noticed a rattle in the bottom end when idling out of gear,
noise clears up when you pull the clutch in,
release the clutch then its back,
also, give it a tiny rev from idle, and it makes a pretty load knocking sound,  and u can feel a shudder through the bike,
clears up over 2k rpm,  basically only hear it 1-2k rpm,  and only when in neutral that i can tell

you feel a vibration/knock through the bike as well as hear it =/

it's a very noticeable sound, cant miss it :(

Any ideas on what it could be??
anyone with an idea please post,

its a 2000 model,  58,000klm's on the clock  1 owner, mature guy so not thrashed > sorta know its history, this is 1st issue its had

Need all the help i can get, before i take into my local suzuki dealer,  don't need them trying to rip me off to badly

If you take it to a dealer, better bring some lube. Not for the chain, if you know what I mean.

That sounds like it would be in the clutch/tranny area. Not sure what though.

Could be the clutch basket.  If you spun a bearing, you will hear it wether you pull the clutch in or out.  Drain the oil and see if you see some gold/copper shavings in the oil.  If you see shavings, you definitely spun a bearing.  If no shavings, just bout sure it is the clutch basket.

don't think it's a bearing because it would knock with or without clutch engaged like you said :thumb: i had a bike do that and it was basket, springs in it were too loose and it chattered

possible in the clutch basket area..follow what they said and if you can take the cluch cover off yourself and see if theres any broken parts basket plates ect..

drain the oil into a painters funnel with a fine screen and see if there anything in the oil?

Mine makes all kind of noises.  I stopped worrying about it when I read so many posts talking about the same thing.  I don't feel the knock - just hear it.  Did you talk to the previous owner?

I heard a knock (a perception of one) on my stocker and my 1st 1397 but never had any sign of bearing wear after 2 years of each when they were torn down... :thumb:

Where is your idle?

Have you checked the oil level? (low oil the motors tend to sound clunkier)
Take off like a 13, flick it like a 6

Turn idle up to around 1400 to ensure good oiling and it will rid you of that thump sound...

Before you go to your dealer turn up your idle and see if the knock goes away.  I have a 2000 and when the idle dropped low the motor would make clunking sounds as you described. If it doesn't try some of the other suggestions.

You'll likely get better advice from the guys here than your dealer  :thumb:

Yep stay away from the dealer,  the busa is just another bike to them,  they wont know near as much as you will get here,  find a local member in your area,  buy em a beer and check it out.   Dont be afraid to work on it yourself,  if you get stuck hop on the puter and post a question you will have a GOOD answer in 5 minutes.  I learned years ago not to go to the dealer, none of my bikes will ever roll into a dealer shop for anything but minor warranty work.

If you live in South Georgia I can tell you a dealer that has a Hayabusa expert on staff ME. PM me if you want name and location of the dealer. It will probably take someone that knows the Hayabusa about 30 seconds listening to the bike to tell you problem. If you are confortable working on it take clutch apart and tell  us what you see. Could be warped steel plate, it will be harder to remove than the others. If you find wear replace ALL clutch plates, steel and fiber.  Tell us more and someone here will be able to help you. Good luck.

I doubt if there's anything wrong with it... turn the idle up to 1200-1300 and it may disappear  :thumb:

Hi all, just a update.. sorta..   i havent had it looked at yet,    had a few mates look listen to it, "scratching their heads"
turning the idle up didn't help as  the rattle only happens when you rev it between 1k rpm and 2.5krpm but it does not happen at all if i pull the clutch in then rev up the motor,
the rattle sorta sounds like the motor is knocking (pinging) at the low rpm's  i thought maybe dirty injectors at first... but since you can pull in the clutch to remove the sound.. i kinda dropped the bad fuel/fuel system idea, i think clutch or no clutch the sound would be still there...
the sound also reminds me of the sound of a piston hitting the head softly..  but im sure its not that..  it would happen clutch and no clutch + all through the rpm range

this is the best i can explain the sounds of my problem,  maybe if people ask me questions about it to narrow down the problem list .. it may make more sense, (i am not the best at explaining stuff)

is it possible to be a main bearing in the bottom end???  could engaging the clutch remove a damaged engine bearing sound?  or would it  be definitely damage  in the clutch area somewhere???

also,    once a month i go on a trip to the city from my house for some business,   i always park in the same undercover parking lot, and park my bike  in the same parking spot..
every time i go back to my bike to go home, the dash says the temperature is maxed out and over heating etc, i have to re-set the dash to fix it  lol i don't think its a problem.. but has anyone else experienced this??

cheers steve

and thank you to everyone who has replied so far i appreciate it very much,

Hi, i had my bro-in-law have a listen, he seems to think there might be a rod or linkage from the end of the clutch cable to the clutch assembly itself that may be worn and rattling at low rpm and dies off when the clutch is engaged =/

im not sure.. as i think it would rattle when idling ?  it makes a very very slight noise when its "just idling" i wouldnt call it a rattle, but even it goes away when the clutch is engaged,

seriously this is bugging me out lol... i need to sell my other bike to pay for any repairs etc.. (wifes rules) -.- and yea.. im trying to get a handle on what the noise might be before i take it in.. as the mechanic could just say anything.. and get away with it..  im not good with engines lol  i just ride them

anyway,  ill keep adding any new info

Cheers
