You ain't kidding, Johnny!

The competition isn't knocking at the door, it's kicking it in!!

Great job Charlie, you really kicked ass.  That last run was as smooth as silk.  It was good to see you and watch your runs.

Good job to Bill Warner at 226 naked in his first time out on a new bike.  Fastest naked man at Maxton!

Hopefully my bike will be ready by the next meet.

I have gremlins. You all know the feeling............

I seem to go faster in a headwind for some reason, don't know why??  Maybe not 235 the next meet, I will be hoping for some improvement...maybe 230.  The 235 is the naked guys holy grail, (just like 250 for the fairing guys) You are the only one that has done it and I think you did it twice.

I really need to get a little seat time on this bike.  Its a lot different then the Vmax and I definitely have a N/A right wrist not a turbo one.  First I need to find out what happened to the bike on shutdown on that last run.  I have a little water in the oil (just enough to make it look like Peter North was in the motor.  Seems like the head gasket.  Plus, I pulled the plugs last night to do a leak down and found #2 plug was f'ked up.  Here is a pic of it.  All we can think of is when the water hit the ceramic on the plug it exploded???  Any one have ideas.

Bill:

No, you are not imagining it.  I didn't post up about it until now, because I don't feel like getting flamed by everyone and arguing.  Not much time for the internet lately.

It has been MY, and I repeat MY experience, that the conditions on Sunday were some of the best I have seen at Maxton, at least for me and my bike, the way I am set up.  A 10 mph+ STEADY HEADWIND is when my bike runs best.  I went over 240 three times in one day with A 20=(?) MPH headwind.

Second best conditions are usually the 3/4 headwind/crosswind frome left to right that is the norm 90% of the time.

Third best are when it gusts from left to right.

The worst conditions for ME were the day we had the 10 mph tailwind.  My bike lost all steering input at 225 all 4 (?) runs I attempted.   I would try tokeep it between the cones and missed them by an inch once.  I would chop the throttle, then get mad, and then crank it open again, but as you know, the boost is gone, run over , maybe a lousy 225 max.  The tower was going nuts watching me and was glad I bailed making any more runs.  Those were the scariest runs I have ever made at maxton and were 20+ mph slower than I have been there before.  My runs in the 240's & high 230's were only scary when it came time to slow down.

Again, I am not telling anyone they are WRONG. Everyones bike is set up different.  And maybe 95% of the bikes there will run better with a tailwind.  But for those of you out there who think it's crazy that there bike felt stable at ultra high speeds with a headwind, it's not that crazy.

My feeling is that there is more downforce and the bike stays planted in the front.  It doesn't really make sense though, because how could a 10 mph tailwind take away from the 230 mph of wind you are having push down on that front end?

I don't claim to be smart enough to figure it out, but I know what has ahppened in the past for me and my bike from first hand experiences.

JMHO

Oh yeah, that plug doesn't look melted?  And its the only one?  Were you mapped and tuned at the boost level you were running at?  Kinda funny only one plug fried.  When I melted my motor, ALL the plugs were messed up.  Then again, my screw-ups tend to always be large in scale!

walt,
what works for 1 guy doesnt mean it will work for the next guy (as if you didnt already know that). you're the one thats doing over 240 on your bike that noone else has rode so how can anyone dispute what you are saying if they havent ever rode your bike in those conditions?

Yeah I know Charlie, you're right, but you know how the internet is......

You post up something a little controversial, or that can be easily misinterpreted because people can't hear HOW you are saying it, and next thing you know they are jumping all over ya!

Your run was the fastest I have have been able to stand there and see at Maxton by 4 mph.  I swear, it seemed like it took you less than a second to go from about the 3/4 mile mark to dissapear thru the turn about 1/3 of a mile later.... It was really cool to watch.

Hopefully you'll come in May so I can get to watch a few more.  May be a little faster if its a warmer track and the weather isn't too hot!

Congrats on your 200 Club Memebrship!

I was really hoping to hear some feedback from someone that ran the same configuration last year as this first meet. I wonder what the conditions did in regards to speed. I was happy with my outcome but wonder if it slowed me down or not.

Walt, are you finding the "help" of the head wind on the acceleration or just the handling when you're rolling out after the traps? I guess I can envision the headwind on the front helping to keep it from nosing over on the roll off thereby helping stability, I'm just not so convinced on the acceleration. I know when I rolled off I didn't nose dive nearly as much as I thought I might. Could have been the head wind but I won't know until I can run under different condictions. But what do I know, I'm just a girl!

Deb...please..don't give me that "just a girl" nonsense!  Your bike looked really great, and I know you did it all yourself.  There are plenty of guys that couldn't do that.

I am strctly talking about acceleration.  From the start to the trap.  I haven't really thought about what affect it has on the slow down.  And I don't roll off.  I chop and grab brakes immediately, so maybe that's not a fair comparison.

auughhh, I shudder when you say Chop! I've seen too many newbies chop & unload too fast with not so good results! (Don't try this at home!!!   :) ) I still roll off & don't chop but it's probably how my suspension is set. Which I think I need to mess with now, maybe...?  Is your suspension tight so you don't feel much shift on the chop?

You really have me wondering about your thoughts on this headwind. I'd love to stick you in a wind tunnel. It's got to be your aero flow in conjunction with your suspension. See now this is where the really nerdy people on LR.com start talking about CP's & CG's and the likes. We proved some of this out with Todd's pushrod adding & removing a fairing which uncovered some suspension opportunities. You know, I bet the LR.com would be a great place to discuss this AND it might help distract them from the 200mph club minimums long enough to not shut the board down again!  :vl:

Take me with you if you go, you have me intrigued!

Yeah stiffer springs in front.

Now I had to raise it because I went back to the stock oil pan.

Interesting. Now I know how nit picky you are, but have you spent a lot of time looking at your front vs rear height? It seems logical to me (yeah I know, Captain obvious here) that if a head wind helps & a tail wind hurts then your front to back pitch may need a little tweaking. Obviously I'm no expert here but I would give it a good look. If I felt a headwind was helping me then I'd be trying to duplicate that effect without the "benefit" of the headwind or detriment of the tailwind.

I know you don't need me to tell you that but, hey, sometimes hearing it from someone new puts the lightbulb on!

Deb

PS: Call Todd for the how to's, I'm just the idea girl!

Yes I have a ridiculous amount of time and energy spent replicating the front and rear heights, including hanging electric winches with chains from my garage ceiling, to raise & lower fork tubes, measure sag, etc.

Problem was, it all changed after the raked fork, then chaged with the new swingarm, now changed again with stock oil pan.
