Shorterning the front forks
« on: August 22, 2008, 06:11:24 PM »
I am running a 02 gsxr 600 front end, fornks triple tree. I am wanting to shorten the front end and respring and revalve it.

My machine shop can shorten the tubes, just wondering about thespringing of it, the valving should be easy , we have revalved fork before.

Wondering i the step can be explian to me

You dont shorten the tubes, you machine a spacer under the dampening rod to lower them internally

is this inverted 600 forks or the older standard forks?
the standard forks are harder to shorten
the inverted forks are easy to shorten (they are internally shortened)

THese are non inverted. the clamps are on the tubes itself. I was to the cut the tube remachine the threads and it used a shorter spring inside.

for the spring you just need to shorten the spring spacer that is above the spring

Dont cut the tubes, just machine a spacer and put it under the dampening rod and as Pinky said shorten the spring spacer on top. For more preload cut less from the spring spacer than the height of the spacer under the dampening rod. If you want to go 2", cut the spring spacer like 1 5/8". It makes it a little tougher getting them back together but the additional preload eliminates any slidehammer effect when launching as the forks are already topped out. I wouldn't screw with the valving on the forks, it doesn't really matter much for dragracing

the standard forks are alot harder to disassemble the shock (where the spacer would go on the dampening rod)

The big problem with the non-inverted forks is that you can only go so low and you run into problems with the length of the lower leg. I had my Bandit forks 1.75" through the tubes with clipons attached and a 1.5" internal spacer and couldnt go any lower. I only had 2" of total travel and rules prevented anything less

I have some detailed pics of the install somewhere. I'll try to dig them up for ya. For springs I went through Race Tech and got the stiffest ones available. I also slowed the valving down with some 20 weight fork oil. I didnt want to bottom the bike out on the street.

If you're already 2.5" through the clamps, Im courious how much travel you have left. Can you take a measurement like the one below?

Well If you're hoping to get it lower it wont happen. The best you can do lowering them internally would be to reduce the amount they stick through the trees. If you're 2.5" through the trees now and you lower them 1.5" internally than you would be 1" through the trees and still only have 1" of travel and at the same height you are now. I know this is not the answer you're looking for but you cant shorten the lower leg. If you want the front any lower you need new forks and trees.

btw, You really want at least 2" travel if you plan on doing ANY street riding
