Falicon stroker crank & stock clutch basket - how noisy ?
« on: September 08, 2008, 12:29:03 PM »
A local builder installed a big block, about 1600cc and 13.5:1 he says with falicon 9mm billet stroker and a muzzy billet block into his personal next seasons engine.

After getting the engine running he said that the whining sound from crank gear to clutch basket gear (primary gear in english?) is very noisy.

When hearing of his thoughts and engine spec I got a vague flashback that with billet stroker the clutch basket is recommended to be upgraded too - but I thought that the gear was still stock gear and only to make the basket stronger.

Anyone else detecting a BIG whining sound when running alike combo - it does generate street bragging rights, but does not sound right? ...or ?

I used a stock basket in my bike to tune it on the dyno . had a kiddie 8.5mm billet crank . no whining (or any other strange) sounds .

running a 10mm APE billet crank with stock basket in my Kit car since 1 year I noticed a slight noise reduction after the first 500 miles, but its still whining...
think its caused by the different(japanese?) modul of the teething on the basket.
 :?:How can this be fixed?

Falicon said that let it run for a while to get to smooth the gear...

Maybe the gear could be smoothened also by other means ?

of course I am sure!
its the same whining you hear when going backwards in your car (presuming your car doesnt have an automatic geartrain)
its a very common phenomenon on straight type teething

I have no idea if it is right or wrong but, if I heard my bike making that noise after a rebuild I would be worried. However, I have heard "Pete Jackson" gear drives on V8's make that noise and thought it sounded awesome.

falicon cranks always made a different noise than the stock cranks, even back in the oil cooler days, i could always tell when someone had one in motor, you can coat the primary gear to make up some of the clearance to quiet it down, it does work, I always ran mine with no issues, the oil collers used to sound like a rod was bangin around in there

It might be the oil pump gear. I put a new one from schnitz in a 1000 and it wined really loud like that. Switched to an ape and no more whine.

I think this engine still has the same oilpump as when it was a muzzy billet 1441cc. Only the crank is changed and internals modified accordingly to fit the crank.

I think you'll find that the Schnitz gear is an APE gear and they all come from the same "outside" supplier.

I know but i think they had a bad run of them. That is what was said when I called and asked about it. No biggie the other gear fixed it.

Checked it in this bike its the same oilpump gear as before, before falicon crank no whining sound - now, quite street respectable sounds... its the crank/clutch basked gear, most likely.

If this is something that gets settled down with time, it means that there will be pieces of metal going around the engine - dont like that idea that it settles down. Or do you guys think that it just hammers the gears so that the gear gets a different shape rather than worn out ?

anyones guess Petri ?....whatever--its not good IMHO...very high pitch vibration / energy causing that sound

might want to check the clutch outer for stress cracking at a regular basis

Yep - luckily or unfortuately not my own bike. We will be dynoing (ie. mapping by reflashing using ECUeditor)  this 1700cc beast on monday. We shall see or should I say hear then...

It has s2000 injectors and a bosch high volume fuel pump with 4.4bar fuel pressure for juice.

Yep, with mild cams saw about the same power as turbos with 0.7bar or about 70hp more than stock K8. Cant wait until he gets the right cams in...

Not really - while running in it just has gotten less and less noisy. Anyway the owner does not complain as the power levels are very good.

There is a dyno video somewhere on this board to hear out the latest situation.
