Texas Mile -Turbo Busa- 197MPH
« on: November 02, 2008, 04:01:35 PM »
Just found out why I was unable to get my bike to go 200 at the texas mile. I made 300hp on the dyno and thought I was in for sure. Drove 970 miles to get there and made 7 passes with the best 197.8mph.

I was the guy with the stock length black busa who had a hard time keeping the front wheel down. I put a new gear position sensor on the bike at the track that tricks the computer into thinking its in 5th gear when you are in 6th. Well I pulled the clutch and put it in and made several runs that never seemed to pull hard on the top end.

Well you need to plug the sensor in!!!!!!

I just pulled the bike  apartt looking for a boost leak or something and found the plugj ust sitting there. I read in the manual that the default for gear postion sensor is that the computer thinks it is in 6th gear all the time. This is possibly is why it wheelied so easily(no timing retard in 1st and 2nd). And would not pull on the big end. I even tried to run it out in 5th gear and only went 191mph(19 tooth in the front and 39 in the back). 197mph in 6th.

I guess I will be driving to see you all again in March. Thanks for listening to me cry. DPC

in the maual page 4-30 it said 6th gear default. Maybe you are right because I was at 9900 rpm at 3/4 track in 6th and the same at the mile mark. I'm such a bonehead! Its a long drive to make a dumb mistake like that. It did pull real hard 1st-4th gear and most of 5th.

In a way your luckier then me I drove 2000 miles and spend all Saturday doing 150 mph then a 170 mph last run to find out my O2 sensor was lieing to me.

fixed it the next morning to tune my bike up to 210mph and then blow up my last run when I was trying to equal my 230 mph mark

So far out of that engine I've save 3 rods and pistons, the trany and the crank everything else is toast.
Maybe this year?

If it did default to neutral, I could see it killing mph and HP(since your fuel mapping is now jacked up) and lucky you didn't melt it.  But if it does default to 6th like the manual states, I don't see how it could have really slowed you down on the top end unless it was hitting a speed limiter(which I thought was 186mph?)  :?:     Either way I am glad you found a potential problem and got it fixed, I am just trying to figure out if it actually could slow it down up top...

Couple other guys at the Mile were questioning the speed limiter/GPS mod thing also..... couple felt they were still hitting a speed limiter eventhough they had the GPS mod keeping the 5th gear signal.

See ya in March......

BTW great looking bike...... I liked the EFR style dump. :thumb:

the manual says default is 6th gear, i know when i unplug it and run it to the limiter in 1st or 2nd gear it smacks the limiter at about 10,800 indicated, guess about 10,200 ish actual.

Stock wheelbase I'd run a bigger front sprocket so you can keep the power controlled a little more as well. Even with the 10,200 6th gear limiter a 19/40 combo will get you 200 mph if I remember correctly.
previously owned a 01 blk/gry Busa little of this little of that...oh yeah and a ghetto turbo 320horse/200ft.lb. 8.92@169
Bikeless....for now.

My rev limit is extended to 11,300(by DaveO), on the dyno and at Bonneville my tach was reading 11,800-12,000 when I hit the rev limitter. I knew that they had happy speedo's, but didnt know about " happy tach's".

300HP should get you over 200MPH in 5th gear easy. Jen ran 216MPH with 294HP - Oct 07 and 222MPH this year with around 320HP.

I had 19/39 gearing and at the 3/4 mile mark I was 9500  rpm +/- and it just never seemed to pull anymore. I know I've had a few too many happy meals and weigh 230#. also, how much will loose leathers slow you down? My leathers from the pictures look kike I weigh 330#. :D

You may want to drop down a gear or two in the rear with your weight. We were running 19-39 on the 222MPH run pulling 10,700RPM's in 6th.
