Looks like State farm is trying to f@ck me over
« on: November 17, 2008, 09:06:15 AM »
I was working on my 14 and it fell over on its left side, long story short my bike is completely custom and they know that and now they ask me why would I put so much money into a motorcycle. The claim the may have to total my bike because of the amount of the repairs, but I was told by my agent which is my sister that all my custom work would be covered in case of a loss as long as i have pics and receipts. The claims department are on some different $hit.. Let you know how it goes.

I got SF as well, simply because they are one of the few to reasonably insure a bike. And I have extra extra coverage.

Really interested to see how this turns out...

ur sister is right.. as long as u have receipts. they will cover it u will have to argue with the claims adjuster. i went thru this about 5 months ago. i gave them receipts totalling over 6000 when they totalled my bike. along with the retail on my bike (2002 busa) they gave me 10600 all said and done. and i bought the bike back for ($cheap). now i did have to argue with them on the value of the bike. pm me and i can give u some more input. or u can call me 502-410-3039

For me, I don't have any receipts, but I took a boat load of pictures just in case. Hopefully, that helps.

Yeah, so far, so "good".  Can't really blame them for asking a few questions and some proof when you are talking about that type of money for what would normally be close to nothing to fix.  I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't pay the "extra" amount for the damage and then total out the bike.  You then would have the option of a buy back (like blu88 said).  Once they get a look at tht thing, I think they will change their tune.  The "only" down side would be the likelihood of a salvaged title  :(  It's mainly because of those sneaky, underhanded people out there that try to get over on Ins. Companies that makes it worse for us on legitimate claims.  Either way, Insurance Companies are crooks too-all that loot we give 'em and then give us hell when it comes time for them to hold up their end of the deal.  Let us know what happens, it shouldn't take to long for them to make a decision.

State farm dont offer custom riders on motorcycle policys, my sister checked several times and as long as I have my reciepts and pics I was covered, thats what under writing told us both. Plus she has a complete file of all the work I did meaning copies of all my reciepts and plenty of pics even a copy of the mag my bike was fetured in.

It's an adjusters job to spend as little as possible to repair damage. It's just part of the game. Tell him/her you're going to insist on the reimbursement you are entitled to through your policy and as guaranteed by the prior information provided to you by State Farm agents.

yea there easy to work with for most part, but its my understanding that if u dont value bike with mods(other than normal $3k in bolt ons) and have total custom, they may not pay u anymore than what stock bike is worth.  but having recepits has to help..but something to keep in mind. u build $40k bike and its insured as stocker, better make that call and get uptodate pics and values on insurance just in case!! hope they take care of u tho!

The best thing I have going for myself is my sister is my State farm agent, she assures me that I wont have a problem and she has made some calls and all my custom work is covered. I have sent many riders from this board and others to her for insurance and she said we have nothing to worry about ( Smithabusa).. I will call everyone today who PM my their numbers because I see this is a hot topic due to many of us have modded and custom bikes, this has been ongoing since November 4th. 313 410-9350 is my number and I will keep you all posted...Derrick aka (Steve)

I got some news for you Steve, your sister/agent has ZERO control over what the adjusters pay or dont pay/cover or dont cover. Agesnt sell policys, thats it. They dont write the checks. State Farm screwed me over in a big way, once. I sent them packing

Sorry to hear about the mishap :(, and I hope they take care of your claim fair and square. I also have SF and they have been pretty fair thus far I did have to debate with the adjuster at the time but after a few receipts and a second look they honored their policy. can't wait to ride with you in 09 :beechug:

I had this discusion on another board...I also own a custom bike, estimated value of nearly $50,000...if you don't specificly overinsure it for the apraised value of the custom work, then they don't have to cover it for more than the cost of the bike.  I also have State Farm, but it just makes good sense or planning if you are going to do all that work to insure it for the value of the bike + custom mods...I would try and fix it and then reinsure it with a custom bike insurance company, think of how they would have beaten you if it got stolen...what is the bike worth $12000 tops with out custom mods???  That's what they would probably try to give you, insurance companies are shitty like that.

I'm glad you made out alright...you have a nice bike, you may want to think of insuring it for the custom work you have done to it....might cost a lil extra, but worth it if something realy bad happens.

It is like this, for the most part an insurance company will pay for your repairs if you can show them that your bike cost more then the book shows them. First thing to remember is most of the time you are dealing with a person just like yourself. If you back them into a corner with hard words and a bad temper they will come right back at you, make sure you talk to them like a person. They are doing a job and that is all that it is, this is nothing personal to you or your bike.

1.   When you are done doing your work take your bike to a local shop and have them do a stated value estimate on your bike. For those that do not know what this is, a stated value is an estimate of what it would cost to build your bike just like it is from a stock bike also this would include your cost of the stock bike plus aftermarket parts, paint, and any mod’s done.

2.   Here is an exp. my bike 2002 GSXR 1K Turbo when I went down in 2005 the book at the time was $6300.00 this is what they tried to give me for the bike and was going to total it, repair cost $6800.00

3.   Stated value estimate from local shop with all the adds $22,500.00, talked with the adjuster and emailed this to her, check to me within two days and clean title bike with cash in my pocket.

Remember I know it is hard but keep all your invoices for everything even oil, I can not say this to much stay cool when talking with the adjuster (most of the time they are looking at a book and have no idea what a bike or parts cost).

Look at it this way the have a blank check with your name on it, all you need to do is show them how much to put on it.

let me know if you or anybody needs any help. I will do what i can.  Richard

SF gave me sticker, minus $500 for "miles", minus my deductible when the tornado redecorated my 08 with 1050 miles on it.  They asked if I had aftermarket exhaust, windshield, even if I had the zipper-sticker on the tank and were going to pay for all that.  I told them the exhaust was ok and I'd just put it on the new one and they were cool with that.  The deducted $3,800 from my settlement and let me keep the damaged bike.  I sold it with a clean title to a buddy for a couple hundred more so my net out of pocket was zero (new bike was below retail).  He has it all sanded down and we're going to paint it this winter.  The damage was scratched plastic and chipped paint everywhere so he has only a few parts to buy (stator cover, clutch lever)  I can't complain about SF at all.
