Anyone here done a 1070 kit??...
« on: December 19, 2008, 03:16:15 PM »
I'm kicking the idea around about putting a 1070 kit together for my 01 GSXR1000  I don't want to tie up a fortune in this motor but want it done right..... I was thinking a 1070 kit from APE, maybe get a street head from Port Tech and some Yosh stg R type R cams.  Anyone done one of these for a daily street rider?  I don't want hot starting problems or over heating problems......just have an 01 1000 I would like to build a sleeper out of to embarass some 09 Zx10s and 1000s with.....

My first idea was to send it to Sal at ACE and let him work it over but I think thats a little more money then I want to spend right now....I KNOW the bitch would fly then though.

Also my back up plan may be just get the head ported/skimmed some, slap on a thin yosh head gasket and slap in the yosh Stg R, type R cams and keep the stock bottom end....then I know it would still start fine when hot and not overheat, but that would probably only get me 170hp and probably not worth spending the money on...... I know a Carp. head and cams would make big power but would probably kill the bottom end and midrange power which I love.....not to mention I would have to sell my first born to pay for it.

Thoughts?

Dam Alan, after all the crap you went thru with the busa if the 1K were mine I think I would take it to a dealer for oil & filter changes LOL

Yeah no shit huh??.....  Well at this point, I am still planning what to do...Not in a real big hurry to tear into it.   I would like to pull the motor and ship it to Sal and tell him "fix it"...LOL....I still might, it will take me a while to get the loot together if I go that route.  I am gonna make sure the busa is problem free for a while so I have something to ride while the 1000 is down.

Still looking for opinions on combos at this point.

If you use common sense if the overbore doesn't get the cly walls to thin and the pistons don't get comprestion up to high and the cams used are sensable then go for it, most of the problems I know of when the guys do big bore setups is things get overdone and then ther back in worse shape than before they started
The older you get do you notice you start chickening out way before the bike does

Well, really lookikng for feedback from people that have done these style motors on real streetbikes that actually get ridden often or even daily.   I want it to start easily on one battery and not overheat in traffic w/ 1 fan.  Those reasons are kind of why I was thinking of sticking with the stock pistons and just doing a top end.  I really want to keep as much low-midrange as possible so I won't be using real big cams....  01-02 1000s have a STOMPIN low to midrange, I know I will lose some of this going with a ported head and cams but I don't want to destroy the low end.  I know the 1070 kit will help all across the range, its the head/cam choice that determines the powerband.  I could do the 750 Intake cam on the exhaust side but I think that would kill too much on the low end.

This is my daily rider so reliability and longetivity are priority one....  I would like it to make an honest 180-185hp with strong midrange.

Now that I better understand what you want, I would recommend this, based off of what I have seen:
- 1070 kit
- ported stock valve head from whoever you trust to do a good job
- OEM intake cams on both sides with adjustable cam sprockets

Aftermarket rods and 750 valve springs are a good idea, not sure if you wanna spend the money thou.  I had a buddy with a 1070 with the above mentioned set-up and he rode it on the street and it idled fine, didn't run hot, cranked off 1 battery and ran strong.  It was a nice overall set-up.

Hope this helps & Happy Holidays !

I love  my 1070 motor.....
If you dont go  bigbore, do 2 1k intake cams.

I have done 01-02 1k and  03-04 1k motors.....

Now i have a 01-02 with 03-04 electronics and fuel system.

I have MTC 3mil pistons, stage 2 head  with big valves from cooper performance, with webcams.
I Drive it on the street, and race it on the track. It also cranks on 1 battery a ytz14s....

THe horsepower difference between the 2 models is bout 5 hp.

If you need to ask me anything else, just let me know...i have been running 1070's for bout 4 yrs

Well, I decided to put my gixxer motor project on hold for a while......the 350 in my 71 vette is starting to show its age (143k miles) and it looks like a crate motor will be on the shopping list sooner then I thought so.....  The 1000 still runs 100% perfect with only 10k miles so.....the hot rod bug will have to wait for that one for a while, prolly till next year.

Thanks for all the replies....I will continue to study up on combos and info that way when I am ready to do it, I will be armed with knowledge... :thumb:

My friend has been running a KWS 1070 kit w/major head work, big valves and Web cams now for the past 4 years. He has 1 full season of road racing on it (about 10 races) and about 2 years of track days probably around 15 or so days. Has kinda quit riding it on the streets now but was up till this year. Super quick bike. Puts out 180hp and still running strong.

Thanks but I've already checked into that.  My buddy has an 2006 1070cc motor in his 2002 chassis.  The 2002 1070cc motor that came out ran 5mph slower than the 2006 motor did.  He told me everything I needed to change.

I got a crackhead deal on a 4mil stroker so I'm doing it.  Now the motor will be 1143.

I was thinking the same thing...buy a motor out of a salvaged bike and that should put you ~10hp up on the 01-02 motor, then you could do some mild top end work to get you were you want to be.

I've put a lot of miles on both 02 and 05 1K bikes, and I liked the 05 power delivery much better.  The little time the motor is actually below 5k rpm is not enough to warrant the extra 01-02 lower end umph...IMHO.  And the potential of the 05-06 motor is far superior.

Interesting this thread is still going.  I thought the 05 up 1000 motors had different bolt patterns on the head requiring modding the frame mounts?   I know the 03/04 motors will work though. Not sure what you would do about the difference in the rev range....the 05 and later red line at like 13,500, 01/02s are 12,500.... I would probably have to use the ECU/gauges out of the 05 and later i would think..... Once you get into all that, slapping a 1070 kit with a decent head and medium sized cams would probably be easier...  Not doing any of it for a while though.   Gotta get the kinks ironed out of the busa right now before the Tx Mile. :thumb:

Yeah, thats what I am lookin for..... Is the Falicon crank stock stroke?  You definetly have some goodies in that one.... I would like to see some pics of your bike. My 01 blk/silv is my favorite out of all the gixxers, it just needs more snot to stay ahead of the light weights riding the 08 1ks....

Ofcourse my project is on hold for now but..... always researching.. :D

Dude I originally built a 1070 in 01 stock head, web 540/566 cams .385/.335,600 springs,j.e.'s made 176hp&92ft lbs fun little bitch to ride until broke stock rod.(never again) Purchased 02 red/blck same cams same springs self ported head that daveo extended ecu cause power was still on the rise at the box.after ecu extension & took off taller road race tire bike made 180.6hp&86ftlbs didnt quite have the grunt from 4k& under but who gives a shit that bike was a blast w/completely stock bottom end, thinner yosh. head gasket & from 2nd gear roll on the stock bottom end motor would wax the other. I would like to build another one w/3mm j.e.'s,self ported head, carrillos &.395in &385ex stock stroke would be close to 200hp. 230-240hp busa's are fun but not as much fun to ride as close to stock wheelbase gixxer 1k extended ecu & -1on countershaft sprocket & -1on rear sprocket & 194mph....
