Busa wiring problems??
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:29:23 AM »
Ok i just got a good deal on a busa. It needs some work, but i didnt know it was to this extent. Ok im a newbie I have pretty good knowledge of what im doing, but i need some help
The cluster has some weird wiring issues. The tach idles at 3k, even though it is at normal rpms. the spedo is stuck on 110 whether the ignition is on or off. The engine temp is broken.
All this just seems like a cluster, but it misses and sputters at low rpms. once to mid-high it is fine. Sometimes it even backfired through the intake.
The bike is an 02. A couple owners before me put a 06 motor on it. Idk what the problem could be. I need help!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Taking into account everything you have provided and maybe trying to "see" through to what you maybe encountering; The Combination Meter (or gauge cluster to you) is made up of four "Stepping Motors" that operate the Speedometer, tachometer, fuel meter and the engine coolant temp meter. All meters will move to a full-scale immediately after the ignition switch is turned on to enable self-calibration. et al., from the service manual.

To reset - follow the full procedure below to hopefully gain a clear indicating meter.

If you have found that one or more 'Step Motor' is faulty (like the engine temp), you may be better served to replace the whole gauge cluster rather than to replenish the individual step motor itself - i.e., cost of individual v. total replacement.

Also, what I would do on the rest of the bike is remove all panels and give the bike a thorough pre-flight on all torque specs. As you go around all points, note where you find a lose bolt. You may just stumble on the lose fitting right away. If you need torque specs on specific areas, let me know.

:!: One other thing - before starting the re-calibration - Remove and inspect all prongs on the 'lead wire coupler'. Make sure you are getting a good solid connection and then re-insert. :!:

Yea idk man. That spedo was stuck on 180 this time. It didnt move any. But as far as the engine temp goes, i played with the kill switch with the bike not running and it will go to reading where normal opperating temp, but when i flip the switch to on it goes all the way to the bottom again. And the bike is still running really bad. I think its worse now!
I appreciate the help. If anyone has and tips for me let me know please

You could try one from another bike. Smithabusa or Petrik might know another way to do it...

It might, if you can get your hands on another ECU you'll know for sure.

Ebay has a few for sale, or someone here might, could be someone here might lend you one also.

But before you go and spend money, talk to Petrik or Smithabusa, or someone they suggest. Those guys are doing a lot with the stock ECU.

Anyway, good luck and hope you find a cheap fix.

If you need a 185 speedo, I have one. 17,xxx miles. 150.00 TYD

I would check out the ECM first. Before bailing on the gauges.

However, the gauges cannot cause the engine to run lethargic.   :? did you run through every connection? I wonder if the tipover switch,,, no, ,that would kill or not kill  :?

Leave it till you get more info or an ecu. You could damage that engine.

b4 buying new parts, ohm out the pickup. you can access it under the tank by pulling apart a 2pin plug. it  will cause your problem also.
so your not throwing a code at all?
you said has diffrent motor, has anyone messed with the cams? (has the valve cover been resealed)
