ZZR1400 - national PSB champion of 2008

Cool - finally everything I need on one internet site. I am very close to a the local 2008 national winner ZZR1400 dragrace team and hence any zzr1400 discussion will be welcomed (assuming that the topic ZX14/12 includes ZZR1400). On the other hand I promise to give feedback (to what I know and can be released) within timelimits I have on this topic.

Last season we run the engine with a fair shot of nitrous, never got the all motor prostreet engine running properly. The bike has amongst many other things:
- ARC
- KMS
- One stage nitrous
- Wired clutch
- Two batteries in front
- Slightly ported nitrous engine with 60shots one stage
- Highly modified prostock engine
The rider/engine builder Sami Vittaniemi virtually blew up an engine per race in the seek of excellense through out last season when trying out everything from conventional to unconventional. That paid off like the title says, a lot of competence was gained yielding to desired outcome.

Btw. tried to hack the ZZR1400 ecu (USA model K6), but unfortunately they have not included the backdoor like we have in suzukis.

When you say Prostock engine are you meaning, Muzzy billet?

ZX14 do not really have a separate block as busas have. This engine is very special, requires even a certain type of ignition plugs so that there is enough room for the very high compression pistons to come close to the head without the pistons hitting the head ;-). Gas ported pistons, of course, mtm. Only few persons have seen the head so not much info avail publicly about it - sorry.

I guess not, so it must be all hand built by your crew,
how big were you able to get it in the stk block?

Bore and stroke?

How high is the compression, are you using a remote starter?

Just interested in what R&D is going on this this engine.

Some of the engine internals we would like to keep quiet of at least right now. Comp is anyhow well over 15 to start with. Local requlations say it must start from a battery, now using a special starter for this.

Here is another interesting angle, this is just on the other side of gauge cluster and behind the empty headlights. What in earh is a powerful vacuum pump doing there ?

On fuelling side a walbro intank pump and slightly upped pressure with a regulator mod. With nitrous we were closer to 300hp and no problems with fuel. The original fuel pump is not too strong, a bit weaker than busa pump when we measured it.

KMS engine management is very good, it adjusts the fuel on track too based on oxy sensor readings - hence tuning has always been fairly quick.

This thing sucs amps though so much that it drains the batteries every run. The racong magneto just can not keep up.

 Hey PetriK, It would be great if you can find us out some info  on the ZX-14 ECU, as defeating the speed limiter & not having to use a speedohealer etc, & just learn more about how the 14 ecu  works?? It seems more complex & "finicky"??

Very cool, I would love to pick up a ZZR 1400. Might have to retire the old 12. I just picked up some spark bolts to run in the 12 that are probably similar to the ones you may be running, surface gap(NGK R0045Q-10). They sure ain't cheap. When I get home I'll have to post a pick of them and see if they are similar.

Thank you Petrik, This is a way cool thread you have posted and i hope you continue sharing what you can and understand what you can't. Some of us have been working with the electronics of this bike with not much info fourth coming. There is no easy way to access or intrud into the ecu'' as you said no back door that grants easy interface. We have the fuel system figured out and how its controlled along with the limiters. changed the clutch to muzzys prostock clutch - same cover as in the piccie above by halvefast. fairly good I hear. was the fastest bike of the first nationals race over here.

now looking for some clutch tuning advice to perfect it.  any hints who would be up to the speed ?
