02 fuel tank and pump on a 99 busa?
« on: April 14, 2009, 05:11:05 PM »
I have a 99 model Hayabusa, and recently bought a full painted fairing set with matching tank from an 02 model.

The 02 tank is missing the fuel pump. I thought it would be the same as my 99 feul pump but its definately not. So now i'm wondering what would be best, to paint my 99 model tank, or to buy an 02 fuel pump?

Is it only the fuel pump mount that's different, or is there other stuff i need to change? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

You really need to run the in-tank set-up. Much more reliable.  :thumb:

Do you know exactly whats needed to convert to an "in tank set-up"? I'm new to Hayabusa's and a bit confused after readind too many searches. I dont want to run anything aftermarket just the 02 fuel pump to match the tank i have.

The 99/00 external fuel pump set up is totally different than the 01, 02 and later internal fuel pumps.  I have not personally seen a converted set up but it is involved either way you go.

So to answer your question, if you got connections on a great painter that can match your paint on the 99 tank, that would keep you all stock.  Not saying that is the best route to take. But maybe the best for you.

Not sure of the history of your bike but the older external pumps had a recall and upgrades before Suzuki switched to the internal pumps.  The problem is the screens seem to clog over time.  And to really clean them right and replace all the o-rings is a little on the expensive side when using OEM parts.  However, I did mine at about 38,000 miles and have not had any issues since and am approaching 80,000 miles.  I picked up a second pump just to have on hand in case mine fails again.  I'll just rebuild it and swap em out if necessary.

the 01 and up internal pump set up is much better. Look for a 01-07 stock fuel pump/sending unit set up (for sale section or ebay) and use it. you will need the o ring and fuel pumps screws. You will also need new fuel line to run from the tank to the fuel rail. It has been about 4 or 5 years since I did mine. You will also need to modify the connector that went to the stock pump as the new pump has different ends.  One wire is for the sending unit and one is for the pump. Don't remember which is which, ( been a few years) but the entire swap is not difficult.

If you have a friend with a newer busa, 01-07, lift the tank and that will make it easy for you.

May not be the cheapest approach, but you could put one of these in with two pushlok fittings and hook your fuel lines up to them. It would be the easiest way to convert.

when I replaced my 99 tank with a 2001 tank it was easy. Get the 01 -07 fuel pump and you are good to go, all my gauges work also.....

Beat me to it! Out of the gate with good advise! Good job, Lee!  :thumb:

It kind of sucks as the advise you probably didn't want to hear, especially since you just bought a full matching set. But, having the proper plug-in for the fuel tank and having it routed back to the ECM and then onto the fuel gauge sending a correct signal,, you are looking at a lot of patching and wiring.

If you don't have the patience to check and double check to know that every single prong from the more current fuel pump mates correctly with the later in tank fuel pump,,, you are set for more headache than you realize.

Sand, prime, tape off and paint the old tank. Sell the 2001 to someone and recoup your costs.

You guys are killing me. Either I am a lot smarter than I think I am or you guys are making it a lot harder than it is. my bike: 1999 busa with 1999 busa ecu. switched to 2001 intank pump, cause that set up is light years better than the factory external pump. I clipped some ends off the fuel pump harness and the 2001 fuel pump and rewired the 3 or so wires, can't remember cause it has been years since I did it and ran some high pressure fuel injection rubber hose as fuel lines, and I was done. 2001 tank with 2001 internal pump on my 99 bike. all gauges work fine. This entire swap should take no more than 2 hours, including bolting on the new tank!
