College Paper Questions: Why Land Speed Racing?
« on: April 21, 2009, 11:26:09 PM »
I'm taking some classes at the local college. I'm doing a paper about The Texas Mile. If you have the time, please let me know your thoughts on these questions. Also, feel free to post anything about the genre that I may have forgotten to ask. Thanks!
Why Land speed Racing/Drag Racing/Standing Mile Racing?
Do you compete in any other motorsports?
Any military experience?
Family?
How long have you been racing?
What do you do for a living?
How fast have you gone?
Do you consider yourself an aggressive person?
How far in advance do you plan for a race/event?
Have you ever crashed? What happened?
How much money do you have in your race vehicle?
Describe your feelings and actions during a run.

Feel free to answer some questions and ignore others. I just need enough information from enough people to form some conclusions about the sort of person who does this sort of thing. I get the added benefit of comparing you guys (and girls) to myself. Thanks!

Why Land speed Racing/Drag Racing/Standing Mile Racing?
got the bug watching the first Texas Mile
Do you compete in any other motorsports?
no
Any military experience?
no
Family?
wife and two kidos
How long have you been racing?
Playing in LSR since 03, maybe earlier if you consider runs on bro's busa in New Mexico desert.
What do you do for a living?
try to make people feel better
How fast have you gone?
210 and change
Do you consider yourself an aggressive person?
no
How far in advance do you plan for a race/event?
not very, things seem to come together the night before at around 2am
Have you ever crashed? What happened?
first crash, big brother was chasing me, I was 4-5 years old, on my 50cc Montessa trials bike, I had it wide open and was looking back when the front tire stuck in a drainage grate. I thought I must have flown 150ft but it was probably more like 10ft. lol
How much money do you have in your race vehicle?
ouch, more than the wife knows, but she is very suspect with the frequent brown truck visits.
Describe your feelings and actions during a run.
Butterflies always on the first run. wring the throttle a little watch the tach, shift, make my self as small as possible, hit the N20 button in 4th, watch the tach, let up on N2O, shift, same for 5th, and 6th, then look up from tach on occasion and watch for 1 mile maker. make sure and pass it at full speed, roll off the throttle and apply brakes.

Best part of LSR is hanging out with TFA, TexMex, and BBQ!

Why Land speed Racing/Drag Racing/Standing Mile Racing?
So far haven't made it to Bonneville, not sure I want to  :?
Been dragracing since I was 18,(over 25yrs ago), LSR in the mile since 2007
I do it all cause it is such a rush of adrenaline, sure isn't for the money  :hys:

Do you compete in any other motorsports?
I have tried almost every other kind of motorcyle racing at least one or twice.

Any military experience?
No.

Family?
Wife and 3 children 1-boy(20) 2-girls(18 & 6)

How long have you been racing?
Started in 1982, kinda had a little push from Pops, he has been racing since I was born.
He had his own speed shop on the East Coast, back in the days of RC Eng,
Fast by Ferraci, and Vance & Hines while they still worked for Russ Collins.
He can go on and on about street racing stories with Jack O'Malley of Orient Express.
You could say racing is in my blood!

What do you do for a living?
Work in the Powersports Industry

How fast have you gone?
Over 200mph @ two different events,
always into the wind it seems, best of 202.577mph

Do you consider yourself an aggressive person?
Aggressive, naw, but competitive, oh yea... just not in a mean way, always willing to help  :thumb:

How far in advance do you plan for a race/event?
Just ask my wife, months in advance I eat- sleep- and breath it.

Have you ever crashed? What happened?
A couple times roadracing, nothing I couldn't walk away from though.
Usually it was over driving the tires, once was going way past my abilities, never did that again.

How much money do you have in your race vehicle?
Lost count, and don't care to try and add it up, might hinder my future spendings.
However I do all my own work, and do loads of homework before spending any money.

Describe your feelings and actions during a run.
Here is a write-up I did right after my 1st 200mph pass:

Concentrate, hit the shift points, spray from 4th on instead of 5th slight crosswind
(not anything like March) Got a little aggressive on the start spun pretty good out of the hole (193.244)
OK, we left a little on the table that time, shooting for 195, I will be satisfied, 200 I'll go nuts!

Next 2 passes, we have a problem now the bike doesn't want to shift right
under the loads of NOS or falls back out of gear. (188 and 183)

Load up the bottle again, change attitude, make it or break it, spray in 3rd on up,
again I spin off the line, but it shifts: (195.872) Wahoooo! goal #1 done

Let's try and back it up, want no excuse of butterflies tripping the lights,
this time spray in 3rd and wring it right out each gear pick your butt up in 5th
slide back but don't miss 6th, yes another clean pass! (198.832) oh baby I can taste it now!

Running out of time and Nitrous, and we brought 27lbs! It's 3:25 and the track shuts down @ 4:00.
The bike is now smokin' hot, and little time to get bottle filled and up to pressure.

OK! locked, cocked, and loaded: pull up to the line take a moment to get my head on right,
picture every shift, concentrate on every rev, don't spin, sit back- tuck tight, on the line
and they stop to look for Rustman's K&N somewhere on the track.

Good cause the bike could use a little breather, now I'm calm and ready.
Checklist gone thru twice, "Bike 710 on deck, let er' go!"

Nice launch shift quick this one comes soon, again, now spray, shift, shift,
sit back tuck in squeeze tight, last shift is good, tach @ 10600 hang on tight,
she gets a little light in the rear and starts a little sway, nothing scary, hold it past the line. Done!

Now the hard part, riding over to the timing booth, was it enough, did I do my part,
was there enough in the bottle?

She walks over with just a little smirk on her face, "tell me good news" ????
You went 200.256mph, you did it! I ripped off my helmet and gave her a big kiss!

Thanks to all the guys on here and at the track who helped support my effort:
Karl, Gary Johnny, Ali, MadMike, everyone you meet at the mile are really great people.

Huge thanks to my wife and Dad, who was the only one willing to crew for me
and wanted this just as bad as I did.
Just 1/2 fast!
Personal Best so far:

9.65 @ 143mph 60"

Why Land speed Racing/Drag Racing/Standing Mile Racing?
I did the drag racing thing for a while and it wasn't nearly as fun.  I felt like I was just getting going when the 1/4-mile was over.  Plus being a bigger guy it's also harder to compete with the jockeys.  LSR gets my blood flowing again... :thumb:

Do you compete in any other motorsports?
Drag, LSR, Auto-X, etc. I'd like to do some track days but just don't have the time right now.

Any military experience?
Almost 10-years Air Force

Family?
Wife (first kido on the way) :D

How long have you been racing?
R/C cars since I was 10, bicycles since age 13, motor sports since age 16. Over 13-years for the more expensive toys...

What do you do for a living?
Air Traffic Control

How fast have you gone?
204.468MPH Texas Mile (3/28/09) all motor basic bolt-ons!

Do you consider yourself an aggressive person?
Not really unless someone is in need of help.  I will tell you how it is without the BS though...

How far in advance do you plan for a race/event?
Depends on the race and what it is...

Have you ever crashed? What happened?
Not while racing, only screwing around on the street...

How much money do you have in your race vehicle?
Not much in the new project maybe $3k.  The  next round of mods is going to be expensive...

Describe your feelings and actions during a run.
Actually it's different more me.  The first run is probably the most excited I get (unless something goes wrong).  Since then, I'm totally calm and just taking it all in head down tuck tighter.  I love going fast!   :thumb:

Hmmm hope this helps! here we go
Why Land speed Racing/Drag Racing/Standing Mile Racing?
Funny you know I never really thought much about racing. Then the first time SRAD took me to a RoadRace I watched him and it just looked soo cool. I just had to try. I was hooked from the first trophy! RoadRacing was just the thing that I looked forward to ! I couldn't wait to get back to the track. After I won a Endurance class championship I thought I would take a break but then we bought the HeavyBus (for SRAD to tour on OOPS!) and we started talking LSR and next thing you know here we are!
Do you compete in any other motorsports?
Well as I said earlier I RoadRaced for several years and we have two projects coming up through my job possibly 3. The first two involve building and racing an Electric Race Car both Drag and LSR. The third project is top secret stuff.
Any military experience?
Nope!
Family?
Uh umm yeah what about them? Not in the Military and they don't race.
How long have you been racing?
7+ years
What do you do for a living?
Currently I handle Production and Customer Relations for LogiSystems a Company that builds Electric Vehicle controllers
How fast have you gone?
192mph(If you believe GPS and the Texas Mile Certificate)
Do you consider yourself an aggressive person?
NO not at all until I get on the Race Track and then it's elbows and knees rubbing, and you know rubbing is Racing
How far in advance do you plan for a race/event?
Me months, SRAD, Minutes :(
Have you ever crashed?
Yep
What happened?
Racetrack at Hitchcock the bike wheelied up on the start I chopped the throttle it came down I pinned it, it came back up, I chopped it , It came down and turned into a shopping cart! I lost the front, Broke a bone in my foot and tore the nail off of my pinky finger.
Racetrack at Houston in a Endurance Race I was all the way over exiting for the Pit when a Unlimited bike came around the corner too fast didn't see me and sideswiped me running about 45mph faster than me and knocked me into the grass.
Hurt my feelings.
How much money do you have in your race vehicle?
Describe your feelings and actions during a run.
Wow! Thats a little harder than the rest.  Theres so much going through your mind its racing a thousand miles an hour. Trying to get the best accelleration, trying to get a good body position, trying to listen to hear any funny noises, trying to listen and make the shifts right, Sometimes I shortshift this gear and wind that one out more, feeling of the wind( there was some bad windshear at the Mile on Sunday), Trying to watch the Markers so I know when  to shut down, trying to wait, I just read this the other day,,, I remember
Faster faster faster until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death! I don't know who said that but it's pretty true. Really it's over so fast there's no time to be scared. The windshear thing was very bad and happened at over 150MPH and I wasn't really bothered about it until I got back to the staging lanes and had time to think about it then it scared me pretty badly. So I went right back out and did it again!

To preface, I haven't raced at the Texas Mile yet.  I run at Bonneville and El Mirage.

Why Land speed Racing/Drag Racing/Standing Mile Racing?
Where else can you legally go faster than your friends have ever dreamed of going?  Most of the regular joes have peaked the speedos in their 85mph toyotas a time or two.  Some have popped 110 "once back in college".  People trip when you tell them that's first gear on your bike, then they do a backflip when you tell them it's got six gears.  On the Long Course at Bonneville, you're running over 5 miles at full throttle.  Add that up over a week, then do it again the next year.  Pretty soon you've logged a hundred miles or more at greater than 200MPH.

The LSR people are THE GREATEST in motorsports.  Regularly, anyone will help you out even if you are going after their record.  Where else on earth can you be in the middle of a desert, miles away from anything, go to the next pit and ask the guy from New Zealand if he has a tool and come away with a makita and drill bit set from a guy you've never met.  Or show up at a BBQ in the middle of a dark desert night and get fed till you are full sharing stories with a great diversity of people with experiences as varied as the world is wide.

Do you compete in any other motorsports?
Drag racing, motocross, trail riding, ATV's, old cars, basically anything involving controlled explosions and air time.

Any military experience?
Non-prior service.  Long history of family service.  Dad was in the Air Force during Vietnam.

Family?
Lots.  Kids, wife, aunts, uncles - they all enjoy participating.

How long have you been racing?
riding for 35 years.  racing since I got my license, maybe 25 years ago.

What do you do for a living?
Engineer in R&D (Electrical)

How fast have you gone?
206 and change

Do you consider yourself an aggressive person?
not personally but in a kickboxing ring or on a bike maybe.  I don't ride at the limit though (see family).  I'm a 7/10th's kinda guy - I like safety margin.

How far in advance do you plan for a race/event?
months

Have you ever crashed? What happened?
Twice on the street.  Somebody turned left in front of me without signaling at the last minute and I high sided getting around them.  They didn't stop and see if I was ok.  Once while riding in the snow around lake tahoe on my GS500E.  Cal-Trans had just sanded the road and I touched the front brake in a turn - my bad.

How much money do you have in your race vehicle?
Lots but not nearly as much as the non-production class guys and the car guys.

Describe your feelings and actions during a run.
Calm cool and collected.  The rule is "nothing big fast".  My heart rate comes up but I just try to enjoy the ride.  That's what I'm there for.  It's like a ballet of speed, small inputs, and positioning.
