I ALWAYS watch other people and watch for sand or gravel especially in EARLY season here in North Western pa! haha

Got my motor back together didnt have the tank on or the muffler..rolled it over to pre oil it kicked over on the lube i used to slide the throttle bodies on and i about had a heart attack! Almost didnt have to worry about riding this season!

Look at every other vehicle like there going to run you over. Never assume there going to stop at that stop sign or light.

Yeah I do exactly the same thing. That and I always ride faster then the flow of traffic to keep peeps from coming up from behind me.
Also stay in the left lane on four lane side streets.
Also ride in the tire track part of the lane, not the center. Less likely you'll encounter debris, fluids etc.

Quote from a guy at the dealer when I picked up my first bike: "Most people in cars don't notice or pay attention to bikes.  Ride it like no one can see you, and anyone that can see you is purposely trying to run you off the road and kill you."  I ride with the assumption that everyone is going to turn in front of me, everyone is going to merge into my lane, hell, everyone's out to kill me.  Saved me a bunch of times.  Hard to get folks who don't ride to understand how physically and mentally taxing street riding is.  I'm BEAT when I get off my bike from anticipating and avoiding hazards.  Still take this hobby/release over golf or fishing, though .  For now  :?.

I heard a quote once and i canot verify it but it sounds cool...

"A person riding a bike on the street makes more decisions a second than a fighter pilot in a dogfight."

dont get taken by supprise .
If somebody hits you then you FAIL at  street riding a motorcycle because you were not ready for em.
Youve GOT to think like this.
Use your speed, agility  experience and street smarts

Keep your mind, eyes and head moving, looking for any situation approaching.

Don't get lulled into daydreaming.

Keep the attitude that you'll avoid accidents and be safe.
