I have a few but the one that's saved my butt the MOST is making eye contact with the car driver in their driver's side mirror as I approach them when passing on their left.  I can tell if they're paying attention or not.  When they're NOT paying attention they don't check their mirrors so I slow a bit before passing and more than half the time they change lanes right in front of me, no signal or warning!!  The situation changes, depending on traffic flow.  If I'm in the left and the whole lane is moving fast then I just look for head movement of the driver to my right, those kind of drivers look and steer at the same time!  Practice looking into their mirror and/or checking for head movement, it works!

Just thought of another tactic: Run through scenarios in your head! Imagine every traffic situation possible and how you can defend against/avoid an accident.  In a nutshell, think about the "what ifs" as you're approaching an intersection, for example.  What if that car approaching to my right runs the stop sign? What if the car coming towards me turns left right in front of me? What if I have to bail off my bike, which direction should I roll to avoid getting run over by the car behind me?  You know, stuff like that.

Loud Pipes saves lives.
Pretend your invisible and no one can see you, that way your never in a position you can't evade from if necessary.
I have even heard that those neon lite kits help make drivers more aware of the bike at night.
Don't do anything that would cause disrespect to another driver and be more polite.  Road Rage issues solved.
Wear the appropriate clothing of the day.  Cotton rubs thru in less than a second when used as a barrier between you and the pavement at 25mph, leather good, cotton bad, bare skin even worse.  I've seen accident victims who have rubbed their ear, shoulder and breast off on the pavement because of no protection clothing or helmet was worn.  She was a passenger wearing only a t-shirt and shorts bare footed. Nasty scene.

Loud pipes piss most people off. Staying out of someones blind spot in the first place, saves lives.

I agree with you, they do piss people off, but they are always looking to see where the obnoxious noise is coming from.  I never said the noise decibel output level of the pipe was the saving grave, but rather hoped that the implied thought was that the noticability factor that one receives once the loud noise had been identified.

Just a thought to ponder; the exhaust on a motorcycle points to the rear, that's where the sound goes too.  A car coming towards you wouldn't hear the exhaust.

Don't you wish all idiots had such a open public announcement! Rather than always having to guess where they were they would just scream it out themselves!

No.  :? Then everyone would be screaming all of the time. That's not good.  :|

That is the exaggerated version of reactions that I see from a quite a few people when very loud vehicles drive by not just bikes.
