TOP TEN, ALL-TIME OPEN WHEEL RIDERS
« on: November 20, 2003, 12:57:00 PM »
Friends:  As a winter, bench-racing effort, I am trying to identify, and save from obscurity, the TEN FASTEST open-wheel RIDERS of all time, On any bike, and at any place.  But with an "official" speed, not GPS (which is so very accurate, but hard to verify...)

These would be for (Bonneville) full mile or 1/4 mile, since they didn't allways have the "exit" speeds.  Same with Maxton, and of course, the one speed for el Mirage.

My present candidates are:

JON MINONNO..............252+++MPH...BONNEVILLE...1992...TRIUMPH
STEVE KNECUM............251.+++MPH...BONNEVILLE....2003....HAYABUSA
LEE SHIERTS..............250.006 MPH....MAXTON....2003...HAYABUSA
WAYNE POLLACK.........247.947MPH...MAXTON...2003...HAYABUSA
JOHN NOONAN.............247.735MPH...BONNEVILLE....2003...HAYABUSA
DENNIS MOTORHEAD....245.198MPH...BONNEVILLE....2003.....HAYABUSA
SCOTT GUTHRIE..........240.128MPH....MAXTON....2003....HAYABUSA
DAN KINSEY...............239.+++MPH....BONNEVILLE....1991....HARLEY
DAVE CAMPOS............238.+++MPH....BONNEVILLE.....1974....HARLEY
CHARLIE TOY.............237.+++MPH....BONNEVILLE.....1995(?)..KAWASAKI

Notice that 6 of the 10 members are on Hayabusas-and all in 2003!

Potential candidate is:
HANK BOOTH....236.+++MPH...BONNEVILLE....2003....HAYABUSA.

I would very much appreciate if anybody with knowledge about the above "missing" details could add to this thread.  Especially Larry, Joe, etc.

AND, Hank, the 1974 Dave Campos record ( which still stands), was set on a PANHEAD CHOPPER! Complete with bondo-molded,  custom painted and pin-striped frame.

I might add, on the subject of EXIT SPEEDS, that Jon Minnono would be further out in front.  On that colossal run in 1992(?), that his EXIT speed was over 256 MPH.

I find it interesting that only 2 MPH seperates Bonneville and Maxton

traction limits speed at Bonnie-veeelage
length of course limits speed at MaxieTun

Get a decent long paved course and you would see higher speeds. True, there's no great steeped tradition; but you could certainly go faster.

Perhaps a cloak and dagger, fly-by-night meet could be arranged with some of the Big Dogs who could take turns on runs each carrying the same collection of GPS units with them?

Rear hub has a drum brake on one side, drive sprocket on the other side.  They are reversable.

This "style" of riding was used for a number of years.  ( I have used it, but in leathers, thank you.) The problem is when you fall down - which someone did.

I guess Rollie typically wore leathers, but he was trying to break the 150mph barrier, which had never been done on a bike before.  Apparently the quality of leathers back in 1948 just wasn't up to todays standards 'cause they kept tearing at around 147, so this was kind of a "spur of the moment thing" for Rollie.  well it worked.

Both this picture and the event contributed significantly to the Vincent/HRD legend (especially the "Shadows" or "lightnings").  Nothing else could touch 'em back then.

I had heard this record stood for longer than any other, but I haven't been able to confirm that.

TZ750, there was one other guy that did the swimming trunks thing and went down at 140.  I don't know how messed up he was, but I do know he lived to talk about it!!

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack this thread.  While I'm not the salt addict you guys are (but I don't have a turbo... yet), I've always had some admiration for Rollie Free and thought I'd mention him.

Good question about tech, Dennis.  If I remember right, the Rollie Free thing was done on "private time."  Private time is when one "rents" the track from the BLM, and race on it.  The only "tech" is AFTER the record is "potentially" set, to see if the bike is legal.

Since the sanctioning organization, like the ECTA or SCTA is not in charge of (or insuring) the event, they have/had no say about the "riding costume."

GatoR...I believe I remember about the rider you are speaking of.  I think the rider was Tommy Smith, of Turlock, California.  He was riding a Triumph twin in about 1950-52 when the bike tossed him onto the salt at something over 140 MPH.

Last time bathing suits were used at Bonneville!

At least half of those numbers are not correct.

Better to erase and start over...
