Gen 2 crank rotor in a Gen1
« on: September 20, 2010, 04:22:34 PM »
Anyone put a gen2 crank rotor in a gen1 WITHOUT using the gen2 stator?

Looking to possibly switch over to gen2 electronics and wondering if I need a stator as well.

John

not sure. the 2 people i know of swapped everything out to a gen2.

the windings are a different size, you have to use both

Thanks Steve. Do you know if they a different diameter or if they are a different width?

no i just know that there both a different size, a friend of mine tried to put a 07 rotor on a 08 bottom end and the stator cover would'nt fit, i can find out tomorrow for you..

Thanks Steve. If you get a chance to look at it that would be great.

I am thinking that Suzuki may have increased the width of the stator a little to increase a few watts of charging power. If that is the case, I may not want to use an 08 stator with a GEN1 rectifier, IF the GEN2 rotor will fit with a GEN1 stator.

use all gen2 stuff, and disable the secondaries in the ecu...., you may want to use an offset brock's pin also, considering your timing...

Stator is larger diameter too I believe. just a little.

Once I receive teh GEN2 rotor, I will compare to a GEN1 to see if machining changes could be made to use modified GEN1 as well.

This seems feasible since the GEN1 is 24-1 and the GEN2 is 24-2.

Could it be as simple as just machining another tooth off of the GEN1 to acheive a GEN2 compatible rotor (assuming the rotors are indexed the same way with the keyway)?

Anyone have a GEN2 and a GEN1 side by side to compare?

What did You find out about this issue Sportsbikerider - can the Gen1 rotor/stator be used with Gen2 harness/ECU ???   And if so , then I just rewire with the Gen1 rectifier/regulator - right ???

Did that, amazingly it worked.
But John has a lot more experience since this thread started, just wait..

Yes, it works, You just need to grind off the additional crank rotor tooth. Be sure it is the correct one as compared to a GEN2.

But what about this, no grinding, bolt on gen2 rotor in gen1 engine ,with gen1 stator ?

There is a slight diameter difference between GEN1 and GEN2 rotors. Not sure if you can put the smaler stator in the bigger rotor or not. Probably best to just grind the tooth if you are using a gen1 stator.

OK -I belibe , that Gen1 stator and Gen2 rotor will work together for the ECU cranck signal , but I`m worried about charching voltage and rectifier/regulator  :? I want to keep Gen1 rectifier/regulator also !!!
But if You say, that it all works together fine , then I`ll have to take You`r word for it

I can verify , that Gen1 rotor (with one removed tooth ) and stator works OK with Gen2 ECU/ wireing  :tu:  Mine works fine  :thumb: I also use Gen1 regulator/recifier but I`m planning to swap this part to Gen2 one also soon  :D
