Larger front or smaller rear, or both

Are you trying to go faster or get better fuel mileage ? Dropped two in the rear on my '06 calculated 205 MPH. Unfortunately without additional power it just makes the bike sluggish. As far as fuel economy the sweet spot seems to be around 4K. By running a higher gear you'll be traveling around 80 MPH for peak fuel performance.

trying to get better fuel economy, also reducing engine wear.

engine wear i wouldn't worry about, plenty of 100K mile hayabusa engines out there.
