2008 GT40R!
« on: March 08, 2012, 03:17:42 AM »
So I've always wanted a turbo bike even back when I had my R6. I bought the busa last April and rode it with the nitrous setup all season. Thanks to busacraver I ended up buying a stage one kit on here and the story shall be told below!

Here's the bike the way it sat last year... Decent running bike (8.80's-9.00's on motor)

The kit I bought was a used oriental express kit...

After much debate and advise from many here I decided the 2860 it came with wouldn't get me the numbers I wanted and I needed to upgrade the motor also if I went bigger turbo...I ordered a GT3076 and decided to do up the motor! JE pistons (base spacer), Carrillo rods, APE studs/bolts, high volume oil pump gear, 2" pan, 70lb springs, SS valves & adjustable cam sprockets.

I was very lucky to have a buddy who owns a shop (B&V Performance and Repair) who said I could build the motor and do all the work at his shop. Because I was doing a lot of fabrication work it came in handy! I also decided to port my exhaust ports which turned out well.

Ok I'm done for the day I gotta get up in 3 hours to finish the bike up! I'll continue the project update some time this week or weekend!  :tu:

Ok bike is done but I was too tired to fire it up today! Tomorrow morning and keeping my fingers crossed I have no leaks or issues! Back to the project!

So once again with the advise from many here I had found out that I wouldn't get away with running 350+ on pump safely with out some type of cooling so I decided to buy a core and turn my plenum into W/A setup. I bought a used Gen I radiator/heat exchanger (Thanks tom!), 500gph pump and lines from the same vendor (Frozenboost). My bike is lowered so I had to shorten the heat exchanger. As you can see the plenum went through several phase! Richard was nice enough to modify the end cap for the charge tube from the 4088 and tap it for all my boost pressure needs.

So because the size of the core I selected I either had to run a LSR style tank but I wanted the extra protection of the factory tank so I decided to just notch a section of it and re-seal the tank. Took many many hours and honestly didn't give me any benefit because I only dropped 5lbs or so off the tank and the capacity is slightly less but it is what it is!

So I get the bike done and I get it on the dyno (I'm using an LC1 to do editing through the ECU) and it's idle'ing fine and I'm running it through each IAP map but then I notice a noise and it sounded mechanical so I shut it down. I have my buddy look at it the next day and he can't really figure it out so I had to pull the motor anddddddddd the nuts for my cam sprockets backed out! Word of advise, ALWAYS use loctite not matter how much you torque them down. I was lucky because of the two gears ONE bolt was still on the exhaust which saved my motor. I pulled the head and all the valves were still good and the didn't hit the pistons...That's all for today I'll post another update soon! I posted pictures below of the setup I'm selling and when I had it complete with the 3076.

Good to see the home build!

as for teh cam sprocket, that sucks. After degreeing, I always remove one bolt and red loctite it, then roll the motor to get to teh other bolt, and do the same.

You should teardown the motor to nothing and clean everything...cut your filter apart and look at the debris, flush all of the aluminum shavings from the bolt scraping teh head. Sucks to do that, but....
Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.

Thanks John! That's exactly what I had to do to get them loctite'd all around. I was lucky enough that I killed it soon and nothing really got into the oil system. I pulled the pan when I had the motor out and looked at the bottom end and also nothing was in the pan or oil filter. Even today when I drained the oil after letting it run a while nothing was there. I'll keep my fingers crossed it was all isolated on the head.

So I started to do more research since I had to pull the motor to fix the cam sprocket issue and found out that my setup was built well but the cheap 3076 I went with could cause a lot of issues...after much discussion with busacraver (man is a great motivational speaker  :hys:) I decided to go ahead and do things right the first time around and go with the 4088...At this point I went ahead and order the Bosch 044 pump, RCC fuel rail, 80lbs secondaries and give Richard (RCC) a lot of my hard earned money LOL!

Timed the cams at 107/111.

I decided to go with 19/42 gearing because I want my bike to be dual purpose being able to do some LSR, street racing and some drag racing.

I figured with the added power I needed a lock up so I was lucky to grab an andersson clutch from turbopete.

I don't run mirrors but wanted a way to see behind me so I installed a back up camera in the hump. This is wired to run whenever the bike is on.

Plenum I made and Richard finished up (Amazing welds!).

You can see the difference between the kit I built and the 4088 kit from Richard.

Annnnnnnnnnd here is the finished project waiting at Williford Racing for a tune. Because the plenum is untested (although the ratings on the core are good) and it's the first bike motor I've built I'm not hoping for big big numbers like busacraver and am more looking for the motor not to give

As a side note I just purchased a WMS switch for my on-board compressor and this regulator to run compressed air to the wastegate since I have a tank in my swingarm already for the air shifter so I won't need to run manifold pressure or deal with C02 fill ups.

Keep an eye on your fuel pressure with your pump mounted so high. The Bosch pumps aren't really intended for lift. Might work just fine, but keep an eye on it.

Thank you for the heads up. I'll move it to under the battery when I get it back.

Yes. I was honest with myself and decided I was not experienced enough to do it and didn't want to try with the numbers I was shooting for. He's got a lot of stuff going on down there so hopefully I'll have it in time for budds!  :tu:

Finally done! It over boosted on this pass but it made 652 @ 35+ (I think it was 38'ish but I'll wait till he post up the video). I'll have more details once I pick it up Saturday! I can't say thank you enough to EVERYONE on this board that has helped me out the last 4 months, Richard for the AMAZING kit and parts, Rodney for being the best tuner on the east coast (My own opinion not trying to rub anyone the wrong way), Lloyd/Busacraver & Bobby at B&V Performance and Repair!

Thanks everyone. I picked up the bike and was able to get some testing and as it's been said time and time again boost is ADDICTING! I ran around on spring pressure only today and that was more then enough!
