Which tire should I burn this year
« on: March 24, 2011, 07:29:22 PM »
Hey there fellow busa ryders, I'm trying to find a good tire for my 08 Busa.  I ride pretty hard, a little street racing here and there and I was considering the Dunlop sportmax Q2's. Do anyone have any suugestions? Should I use the Dunlop or another tire? And what size is best, the 190 50/17 or 190 55/17?
Thanks in Advance,
Mike

Q2 is a great tire, But it is not a very high mileage tire, I usually get about 2,500 out of a rear and 5,000 out of a front, But a buddy of mine has them on his ZX 10 and rode to the dragon and back with them and has about 4,000 miles on front and back and they still look good, So I guess depends on how ya ride.

Define, "street racing" :?
Head to head racing on expressways with speeds exceeding 165+...
Thanks for the input fellas, I have the Dunlop's and hopefully they last longer than the shinko's because last year I went through two pair of them.

Thx,
Mike

165 mph as in the top of 4th gear?

Your idea of "burning" through tires is going through two sets of tires in a YEAR?   :hys: I'm speechless...

I could see a pair of tires per month as long as you don't do any track days.  If you're doing track days, it's going to be more like a pair of tires per day.

I'm not talking about holding the front brake and grinding down a perfectly good rear tire for no reason.  I'm talking about purchasing a fresh set of tires from the vendor at the track in the morning, completely wearing them out in 60 miles or so of use on the track, and then throwing them away at the end of the day.  Heck, even with reasonably civilized street use, I'm guessing that most of us go through two sets of tires to every oil change.  I can remember going through many sets of tires on my Hayabusa from street use, ranging from about 400 miles to about 1500 miles at best, for each set.

That's why I can't understand the OP urinating and lamenting about two sets of tires in a YEAR.

Q2's are great for street riding and street racing.  They're not too bad on the wallet either.  Another option is the Power Pure.

Here's a pretty good street tire shootout, that includes the Shinko 005 Advance, the Shinko 003 Stealth, the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT, the Michelin Power One 2CT, Pirelli Diablo Rosso, the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP, the Bridgestone BT-016, the Bridgestone BT-003RS, the Avon VP2 Supersport, and the Dunlop Sportmax Q2:

As far as motorcycle magazine testing goes, Roadracing World seems to be about as honest as they come, but I'm always suspect of stuff that the mainstream motorcycle magazines print, especially Motorcyclist and Cycle World.  Too many times I've seen them print stuff that I have experience with, and it's like we're talking about two different things.  I don't know if it has to do with pressure from major advertisers or what.

That said, a few years ago, I was at a track day where Motorcycle USA was testing open-class bikes for a magazine article, and I was impressed with these guys.  This particular track day organization had an "A+" group exclusively for expert-licensed road racers, which was really nice.  There are a number of non-racers who have done enough track days to be able to get into the "A" group, but if you're a racer, it's just unneccessary traffic, and a polite pass for a racer might not be percieved as such by a non-racing "A" group track day enthusiast.  Anyway, all the magazine guys were expert-licensed road racers, so they took their stock open-class bikes out in the "A+" group.  The more pedestrian motorcycle magazines might be a little bashful about pushing it, for fear of turning a loaner bike into a rectangle and damaging the relationship with the manufacturer- these guys were not.  Somebody got their feathers ruffled, and before long, it was starting to get physical out there.  The Ducati 999R, by far the most expensive bike there, had almost been looped earlier during acceleration testing on the drag strip when it's finicky dry clutch got a little grabby.  And now I was watching the same bike coming around with it's turn signals broken off and dangling by their wires, as these guys were stuffing each other on the brakes, backing them into corners, and torching the tires doing sideways corner exits.  It was pretty freekin' funny.  They were not disturbing anyone else in the session, or I think we would have had to pull them in and have a talk with them.  Anyways, as far as magazine tests go, Motorcycle USA rode the wheels off of the bikes they were testing that day.

I think you'll like that better than the BT-003.  What size did you get?

You still have the 120/60ZR17 BT-014 on the front, right?

I have not been able to find tire pressure information for the BT-003RS, but I did learn that it's not related in any way to the BT-003. It's a completely different tire, it's just that they gave it a similar name and a similar-looking tread pattern.

I think it's safe to assume that it will need a cold inflation pressure somewhere higher than 23 psi (the recommended cold inflation pressure for the BT-003) and about 30 psi, and unless we can turn up some information to the contrary, I'm thinking closer to the 30psi end of that range.

Yes, the 120/60ZR17 BT-014 is on the front and the Bt-003RS is a 190 on the rear.  Not a 200......too fat.

I personally like the power ones the best. Thats what I use at the track. Its not uncommon to burn a new one up in a day. I normally flip it if its wearing more on one side then throw it on the Busa to wear the middle out.  I get my moneys worth   :D

Yup.

As much as we shouldn't do it, riding on the track pretty much means that you'll never have to pay for tires to ride on the street ever again.  That pile of blue tires with plenty of tread in the middle is just too tempting.

But don't try this at home, kids.  Just because we do it, doesn't mean that it's a good idea.  It's one thing for me to risk it on my own take-offs, but I have an ethical problem with selling take-offs to street squids, who might then get hurt on them.

Yea I read that article before. I was hoping to find the right sizes for the little iddy biddy 2Fiddy I am going to race this year. I am stuck with the BT -003RS but I guess I will have to get over it.  :hys:
