How to tell a 1397
« on: March 31, 2011, 02:58:59 PM »
Bought myself a 2005 Busa and seller says it has a 1397 kit in it. Any way externally to tell if he is correct?

You really cant tell without taking the head off or putting it on a dyno.  How much hp did the seller claim the bike made.  If he claims it made over 210hp or so, he probably had headwork done too.  You can pull the exhaust off to see if its been ported.  You can also check on the back of the head to see if the head is labeled by the porter.  Carpenter stamps the head on the back right side.

Well, I would be inclined to agree that it isn't a big bore motor. That said, the tune could be shitty or the cams could be installed incorrectly and a 1397 could make 166. without headwork and cams an 84mm bore motor pretty much sucks. Not as low as 166 typically, but still crappy.

Thought as much, not inclined to tear into it to see. Truth be told I would prefer a stocker for daily ride.Damn thing still has pair valve and stock air cleaner.

If it's been on the dyno what are the torque numbers? A typical stock bore would be around 100 ft-lbs. Jump in here Jon! 1397 should be closer to 110 ft-lbs. regardless of HP.

If it has the pair valve on it, thats a good indicator that the motor hasnt been rebuilt.  Most builders wouldnt put that stuff back on during a rebuild.

If it is 110 tq and only 166HP, it is probably a 1397 that needs to be tuned and cams re-timed. \\Do you have a dyno sheet for it or a dynojet run file? If so, shoot me a PM adn I will post it or if you can, post it here.

A couple of 1397's I built with just intake cams on both sides still made over 180

Spent at couple afternoons on dyno-can assure you tune is NOT  shitty. Cannot speak to cam timing. Bike seems to run well all around just  not power I would expect. Will see if I can figure out how to send dyno chart.

Most people would put a full exhaust on it  before they  tore into the motor to get more power. That and still having the pair  valve  on I would really doubt it has a 1397.

Something is up if it is making 110 ft-lbs torque and only 166 hp

I would assume your torque peak is at around 7300-7500 with those numbers and then drops off pretty quickly making about only about 85- ft-lbs at 10,000.

Cams are likely not degreed in a good location, unless you want to use the bike to tow trailers   :bike:

If the head isn't ported and the cams are still stock, you won't really benefit from really aggressive cam timing, but you could likely make 15 more HP, with only a 4-5 ft-lb torque loss.
