What up guys........
So the Busa is down for the count.
She stopped runing and all it would do is backfire out of the intake.
Had a buddy do a leak down test and he says the valves are the problem.
Hes still in school and cant do a repair like that.

Does anyone have an idea of how much it would cost to replace them?
Or should I just try to find a used engine  :bah:
If it aint broke.....fix it till it is :)

FYI-
You won't know how much actual damage you have until your engine apart.
As an example, a rod bearing can go bad if a valve hit the piston. If you do take it apart you might as well rebuild it completely including undercutting the trans.

I'd suggest buying and installing a known good engine ( 93 or later with the better starter system ) and then repairing or parting out your damaged engine. You can use your existing wiring harness and TBs to save some money.

I have a couple of low mileage engines if you decide to replace it.

Thanks for the info.......I can get a 2000 engine locally for $1500 with 9700 miles....seems like a good price to me.
Changing to a newer than o3 engine requires changing the ecu and some wiring no?

$1500 for a Hayabusa engine is a good deal as long as it doesn't have any issues.

Unfortunately there are a lot of damaged engines being sold as good recently.

The 02 and later engines have the better ECU and wiring system.
The 03 and later have the better starting system.

At minimum you should retrofit the 03 starter system to the earler engine. You can do a search here to find all the parts needed. If you don't replace the starter you risk losing the starter and or cases if the battery gets low or the engine kicks back

Because of the oem cam chain tensioner, you have to replace the engine?

You do realize that a leak down test is inconclusive if your cam timing is incorrect. At TDC your valves could be open now, put them back in time and do another leak down test. Backfiring will be due to intake cam out of time, resulting in your ignition timing being wrong.

You can also check the valve clearance on the engine. If one or more of the valves have a large clearance, then you have likely have a badly bent valve. That said, just because the valve clearance is good does not mean that you don't have  a valve, it only works one way (to show a badly bent valve)
Any day on a motorcycle like this that ends just needing parts and labor is a good day.
