Engine temp gauge
« on: June 10, 2011, 08:28:58 AM »
Has anyone had a problem with their temp gauge maxing itself out when the engine is started, and it stays there? Have tried almost everything including a new set of gauges. Any ideas?

What have you done lately with the coolant? Tells us more than what problem you are having.

Possible air pocket in the cooling system................I've seen it many times in cars at work.  Take the coolant fill cap off and leave it off overnight and see if the level drops.

What have you done to the bike? Has it been apart? Covers off? I am kind of with Amode on this, if the gauge is topping as soon as you turn the key on, you have a wire off, loose, plugin on wrong. Get your covers off. Take the nose off, unplug the gauges and check for bent prongs. Anything. Check all and try again. Fuses, too.

Mine does that if the kill switch is set to off.

I just went out to the garage and turned the ignition key on with the kill switch set to off and the temp needle immediatedly spiked.   As soon as I flipped the kill switch to run, the needle dropped to zero. I hope this helps.

God, I totally forgot about that issue! This was discovered years ago on the Busa;
'Newbies to the Hayabusa (and all typical Suzuki bikes)

'DO NOT USE THE KILL SWITCH TO TURN YOUR BIKE OFF!'

It shorts out your electrical systems. Use your key and forget the kill.

Why did not the Factory fix that issue?  Or does it strictly apply to Gen 1 bikes?

Fix what issue? There is no issue. If you use the kill switch, it kills the bike and the gauge goes all the way to the right. As soon as you put the switch to run and either put it in neutral or put the kickstand up, the guage functions as it's supposed to. The bike is not supposed to run if the kill switch is set on "kill" or if the bike's in gear with the kickstand down. This is all basic safety things, there are no issues to "fix" here.

And if you're bikes showing full hot while it's actually running, you have either a bad temp sensor or a bad wire that's either grounding out or disconnected.

The "issue" I am referring to is where Chris stated in his earlier post :"it shorts out the electrical system:".  That sounded like a problem to me.

It does'nt short out your electrical system or you would blow a fuse, and if you are running hot while running it could be a bad stat or a head gasket problem..or fan switch or fan motor

 It's just something I remember reading here back in 1999-2000ish. There was a large concensus, by mulitple members, written up here that the kill switch was causing issues.

If it has never happened,, don't do anything.
If it has happened,,, try it,, or don't do anything about it.

But really,, I don't care what you do to your bike.

Well, as for me, I will use the ignition switch to shut the sucker off.  Kill switches were originally designed as a safety feature anyways in case of ignition switch failure.  It is just as easy to turn the friggin' key off.

P.S.  Chris, forgive me if I placed you in a difficult position.  Come on over and help me burn off some of this cash from last week's sell off...........we could rent some "female companions" and go see a Disney movie and then go to McDonald's.  I will pull out all the stops for you buddy....... :tu:

I have always shut bikes off with the kill switch, never had any issues.     Using the kill switch gets you in a habit of using it so you don't search for it when you need it.
