AMA HD XR 1200 AT INDY

Happened to watch it after the MOTO GP today and was actually pretty impressed how well they could get those things around the track.Didn't appear to have much of a top speed down the straight but the winner still put in a lap speed of around 1:55(most of the MOTO GP's were in the 1:40's),looked like fun.

I am a fan of ALL of the XR1200 series.  

Here is a Spanish BBQ cup bike.  Note the OEM oil cooler location, the Termignoni RACE 2-1-2 carbon fiber exhaust system, Metzeler 17" slicks, Braking wheels and rotors, and the Ohlins suspension using 2" risers in the rear (bolted to the OEM passenger foot peg location):

By the way, that's not a Vance & Hines XR1200 cup race bike.  I'm guessing it's just a stock bike dressed up as one, to serve as a promotional tool.  

The race bikes have a 17" Braking wheel, not the OEM 18" wheel.  They have a lowered fender that works with the 17" wheel.  They have an oil cooler relocation kit to put the oil cooler horizontally behind the number plate, and the number plate itself has vertical ventilation slots cut in the bottom half of it.  Nobody races with the stock handlebar either.  That's not even the "race" exhaust system- it's the street version.

The British XR1200 cup bikes look like the Spanish BBQ cup bikes (to me  ), except that they mount the oil cooler vertically behind the number plate, and they use longer Ohlin's shocks, instead of the shock risers:

I'd be REALLY tempted to jack the back end up, to put that thing on it's nose and try to get it to turn.  If it was an "X" model, with the nice fully-adjustable Showa reservoir shocks, I'd be tempted to try the 2" shock risers that bolt to your un-used passenger footpeg mount holes.  But for yours, I'd be tempted to use the longer (415mm) Ohlins shock set for that bike- they're not as expensive as you might think.  I THINK the correct part number is HD852, but I could be wrong- check first.  Just make sure you actually get the longer ones- a lot of people mistakenly buy the stock-length ones, which can be a LITTLE longer, but don't really help like the long ones.  Sucks to buy shocks and then either have to send them back or buy the risers to make them work.

I understand that the fork innards are pretty much standard Sporty fare also.  Race Tech says the stock springs are only .60 kilo (no kidding!).  I don't know how much you weigh, but the correct fork springs for most of us are going to be nearly TWICE that rate.  They top out at 1.2 kilo, and that might be about what you need.  I might try just fork springs and thicker oil if I was on a budget.

Too bad there isn't an economical way to put a 17" front wheel on them yet.  That's probably the deal breaker for me, because it basically adds $1,000 to the cost of the bike, having to buy an aftermarket 17" wheel so that I could put decent tires on it.

ya you are right, doing the suspension is the way to go, the tires have never been a problem on this bike, the bridgestones stick real well, I went down as low as you can more less go with no loss of traction what so ever, and thats on dirty street roads....

Cool.  I still check these things out all the time. 

What size and model of Bridgestones are you using?  I think they come with an OEM version of the Dunlop Qualifier, but I guess I could be wrong.

Jacking it up gets you more cornering clearance too.  I don't think these things will even reach the edge of the tire before decking out hard parts.  Looks like you may be decking out the exhaust on the right side already.

How are the bars?  The one I sat on felt like a chopper- I think I'd want to change to a flat or even maybe a clubman style bar, or maybe even go with clip-ons.  I'm about 5'10" and 185.

I am sorry, my mistake, they are Dunlop Qualifier sportmax, and yes I did it the exhaust. That exhaust was generic Two Brothers with and elbow, I put it on this bike, it was not made for the XR, the head pipes to the colector are stock harley.... that is why it is a little low and hits....
