opinions needed gen 1
« on: December 14, 2011, 08:03:08 AM »
Guys I have a gen1 that I just got.  I am use to 1000 and this is my first busa to drag race.  I have them motor out and was thinking of waking it up a little with thin head gskt and dual intake cams.  What would you guys do???  I also heard of taking the base gskt out to up compression.  Can you do this with out taking the pistons out?   any help would be great!!

you can remove the base gasket without removing the pistons from the rods, however you will be removing the cylinder.

a nice ported head, with two intake cams and a think head gasket will be a nice reliable little power plant

So I would have to take the bottom end apart.  I am trying to avoid opening up the bottom.  How bout milling the head?

As I understand, you want to pull the head(only)  and do the dual intake cam mod, possibly mill the head.

The intake cam mod w/ cams degreed and mill the head will def up the power and be very reliable.

I would slip the cylinder up pull the base gasket, mill .010 off the head to clean things up a bit, degree the two intake cams, take the bike to someone who knows how to dyno tune it, and be happy with reliable approx. 170+- rear wheel HP. Just my .02 worth.

If I slip up the cyliders, will I have to cut the base gasket off?  Is there enough room to do this without pulling the pistons out of the cylinder?

No not enough room to do with out risk of dropping something into the bottom end. Forgive me but I have to ask, why don't you want to pull the cylinder? You're right there!

If you pull the cylider, do you have to take the bottom end apart?  Thats what I am trying to avoid.  Wasnt sure if you can put the pistons back in the cylider from the bottom

Noooooo!!! This ain't no ZX 14. You can pull the block up and set it back on with the pistons going back up through the bottom. Just take your time. If you had any dealings with old school kaw 900/1000 and suzuki 1100/1150 engines you'll be right at home.

Thanks man, I feel much better now.  I think Im gona take baske gasket out and do the dual intake cams.  I will clean the head up and lap the valves while its out.  What does a 8 over 170hp busa run?  Ive only owed 1000s before.  I have a 06 1000 10 over stk motor and my 15 year old son has been 8.82 at 153 on it.  It only puts out 160rwhp

Keep in mind that a Busa is much heavier than a 1000 but it makes a lot more torque. Rider weight is a big factor when tossing numbers around...lol

That being said, I have a friend that is 195 lbs, suited @ 6" over with just the intake cam mod and he runs consistent 9.40's. I've been as quick as 9.33 on a set up similar to what you are doing @ 147 mph.

My busa is set up @ 3" over, base gasket removed, JE drop-ins, .010 milled off of head, two intake cams, 16/43 gearing, murray sidewinder, 3" off the ground, air-shifted, shifting @ 10,400, my weight is 205 suited, I run consistent 9.40's @ 146 mph. I've been a best of 9.28 @ 149 mph. I'm sure with a light weight rider the package would be quicker. :bike:

Thats good to know!!  I am 225 naked, so I need some torque!!  I have been 9.32 at 143 on my 06 1000.  We will see what this busa can do as soon as spring shows up lol
