what do i (Karl) say about Bob Carpenter?
Simply that going to his NA 1635 kit was unequivocally the best decision i've made in LSR.
period.
FULL STOP (for those geezers old enough to remember telexes)

My Johnny Cheese dyno numbers fell well short of Bob's numbers; did i care?
nope.

I built a Carpenter 1635 in mid 2010 and started running high 2-teens, me 240# suited, 6' 3"
did some tweaking & technique improvement...

Greenie (asphalt bike):
March 2012, I ran 224 at Texas Mile in neutral air, next day i went down HARD, started having friends ride my bikes.
then...
Colt hit 203 in Houston 1/2 mile
Zack Millholland (smaller guy) ran 227.3 at Wilmington Mile, neutral air
Colt (smaller guy) ran 230.1 (twice) at Loring Mile, lil tail wind at start.
Colt hit 208 in Loring 1/2 mile!!!!!!!!  Holy schittttttttt!!!!!!

RustBucket (salt bike):
2 weeks ago Bob Sellers (big guy) set new MPS/F-1650 record = 225 at World Of Speed (record was 221), and no we weren't spraying.
Gotta say, this was Bob's 1st time putting tires on salt, 1st time he threw a leg over a 285hp NA motor bike.
1st full pass = 220.5
2nd full pass = 224 (qualifier)
3rd full pass = 226
all with 3-4mph side wind, no help from mother nature.
there was assuredly more in it as Bob's technique markedly improved each pass, but in impound Ryan made me an offer...

Fancy custom streamlined plastic?  nope, off the shelf Catalyst, no mods to it.

Best part?  = longevity!
Nov 2010, I pulled down the motor with new pistons & bearings ready for replacement.
Didn't install em.
head perfect, leakdown 1-2%

Sept 2012 I still have those 85mm pistons & bearings on the shelf.  Anyone wanna buy em?
I am out of the game bc of injuries, but Ryan O. has RBR and Dean S. has Greenie so i expect more great results.

Why did i take the time to tap all this stuff?

Because the advice of Larry Forstall, Steve Knecum, Ryan Ostergard, Bill Warner, Fred Vance, Tom Gates to go to a Carpenter 1635 kit was, like i said above, the single best decision i made in LSR.

How do they hold up on the street? Can you get 3-4,000 miles on the street out of them? When you say high teens, do you mean 8 teens?

Every one I know,3, that has the "new" Carpenter 1635 head is close to or exceeds Carpenters claimed 290+hp. I have two "small blocks", 1350 and 1340 rhey both make around 235hp.

217-219 in the mile.

hold up on the street????????

That is NOT a street motor, 18.5:1 CR.  gotta use race fuel.

Do you know what dyno was used with those engines ?
I`d love to see that head, don`t have the money to buy one, spent all in mine, and it has to do.

For Winkelman, you have to take down few 10hp`s to make it streetable, i have that kind of engine and it took awhile to find right compromise between power and longevity.

Both Karl's motors and both mine were on Johnny Cheese Dynojet Dyno. The last time Karl and I were on JC's Dyno( same day), it was 85-90 deg, fairly high humdiddty, 1000ft elevation.

I was thinking of the stroke lasting on the street. Mine is just a 1397 and makes 215hp. I would like to stroke it if I new it would have the longevity and dependable as my motor now has. A couple 1,000 or so miles a year.

i think a 1635 would easily last 3000 mi on the street, especially if you were judicious about often you took it to the limiter...

I'd hate to lower the CR to the point it could take 93 octane.

If i were gonna run a $15,000 motor on the street, i'd pony up for 20 pails of Q-16 (100gal = $1400)  and keep the Cr at 18.5:1

I dont mind puting c16 in it ( i do now, mine is 14:1) My idea of a street motor is c-16 fuel but going on 150 mile rides and a little street racing now and then. The big thing is lasting more than 3,000 miles without taking out the bearings

Q-16 makes more hp than C-16 in my very hi CR motors.

i don't think the Q-16 costs much more...

My purchase price for the shop as of this past Friday was $82 a pail for C-16 and $110 for Q-16.

The thing you must worry about on the street is oil temp.. I wouldn't run this as a daily street driver, with that comp..your just asking for trouble.. now if you want to blast up the street thats fine.. but ride it as street bike..idk i wouldn't.. unless you don't give a shit whats going on inside....imo

weird on such high prices!

In Houston, i pay right at $70/5gal of Q-16; bring my own Jerry can, they fill from a 50gal drum.

BTW:  VP guy told me don't store Q-16 in a plastic container and don't store it for any length of time in the 5gal VP pails.
use a metal container with a solid O-ring seal

I believe that is has to do with what the state and local laws are on MTBE and lead. Some states can't sell fuels with MTBE from open containers and some can't sell it at all.

I totally believe that. I have kept oil temp under 200F, at that point it needs more than hi-vol gear to keep pressure up, it can`t drop under 30psi if wanna keep big stroker alive. Of course idling takes it down with warm engine. Over 2500rpm it`s around 45-100psi.

its interesting that someone has put an rpm and oil
pressure minimum number attached to a stroker.my thoughts on oil pressure
at idle were pointed towards the camshaft and buckets,as low oil pressure thats restricted
into the head with stronger valve springs and more aggressive
camshafts means more wear potential. With the crank and rod
bearings i question how they would wear much under almost no load
with a closed throttle,do you think the high  comp is too high
relative to the given oil pressure at idle?

You can have 400hp turbo engine with lots of torque and still high comp stroker n/a will wear bearings easier. I have found that there is lot less trouble when put in a hi-vol oil pump. I have standard oil filter and must be careful with cold oil, not to spray oil allover before it warms up, after that it`s ok and holds up pressure. Now the bike is very streetable and can make longer trips with a passenger. With NOS you can make few pulls and that`s it, i can put the 240rwhp on the road anytime.

Yes, that`s true, cams will wear if there is not enough lubrication. This one time i had some trouble with AFR and there was very high temps, lost exhaust valves and little damage to head, there was also exhaust cam and buckets started to wear, oil was too thin at that temp in head. Now there is quite blunt nose in cams and spring pressure just enough it works.
(what was the question again, little ADHD going on)
