Gen 1 suspension advice
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:16:07 PM »
I'm gonna start a track busa and had a question or two about stock suspension.\\

First I'll ask if stock suspension can be adjusted to handle "well" on a road course?

I guess then I'll have questions to follow....i enjoyed the curves even after I stretched my busa but have never really put it on a road course.  It felt "squirly" but i was on pilot powers and stretched with leaky forks...

any help greatly appreciated...I'm starting with just a frame and I'm on a budget so stock may be my only option.

In my opinion it may just depend on your weight. If you are 150lbs or less, in all reality most stock suspensions are good enough once you adjust it appropriately for how you intend to ride.

If you are like most Americans and weigh 185lbs or more then you might consider afermarket suspension upgrades. Use the Search function and you will find plenty of info on the subject.

Yea I'm about 170...5-11.

I looked through some of the tech stuff and I get tired of reading...need more one on one yes or no answers.

I was comfortable on my stock suspension...I guess that should he enough....then I'll adjust as I start track days.

You'll at least want stiffer springs for the front. Stock busa fork springs are way too soft. Most important thing is to have it set up correctly by a suspension guy at a track.

If you are just starting run what you have, but if you want to go fast be prepared to drop $3500 on cartdridge kit and rear shock.

Last spring paid close to $2000 having my forks upgraded with Traxxion AK-20 internals up front and a Penske 8983 rear shock setup for my riding weight and riding style, being in the 240-250 lb range mostly made a huge improvement.  My Busa feels so much more planted even when I hit uneven pavement while leaned over in the corner.

Couldn't agree more, once I had Traxxion redo my complete suspension wished I would have done it sooner it made that much of a difference

the gen 1 was a little bit undersprung in the forks for my geared up 220 lbs. Especially  when hard on the frt brakes .
In hindsight  i should have just put in heavier spings up front.
Instead i just went back to smaller ,lighter bike.

http://www.sportrider.com/suspension_settings/suspension/146_suggested_suspension_settings/viewall.html

Found this a few weeks ago. I weigh 150 (plus gear) and have been riding my '07 on the suggested settings in the owners manual. I found these settings to be a huge improvement for "spirited" highway riding  :bike:.
