B-King mile gearing?
« on: March 19, 2012, 08:38:47 PM »
First time running at the mile, could someone give me some insight on the best gear ratio for getting the most mph out of my B-King.  Suited rider weight is 216#, I have the bike down from it's portly 518 to 441# ready to ride, tires are power pures on carbon wheels, rear tire size is 190/50.  The bike put down approx 185 hp at Johnny's.

So the kink in all of this is the aerodynamics or lack there of.  Everything I have read about here is either on a fully fared bike or a naked with much more hp.  The stock gear ratio which is on it now is 18/43.  I also have available but have never installed a 17t front and a 41t rear.  I was thinking about just running what I have on it and maybe try the 41 depending on the out come of the 18/43 run.

Thoughts?

Stick with the 43 and then try the 41 if it pulls it.  If the weather is good you should have no trouble going 185mph+ if you work on your tuck... ;)

I would forget about the 41T , you don't have the HP for it , your bike dynoed at 185 HP , 41T will be to tall .  I would start with the 43T then go to the 42T , if there is any cross wind stay with the 43T . for get about the 17T front , stay with the 18T .

So how did it go?
Not as well as I had hoped.  I could not pick up anything on the back half, 3-9 mph was all I could manage from the 1/2 to the finish the entire weekend.  With the 18/43 it was not pulling to 6th.  Most all runs Friday & Sat I crossed the traps in 5th around 10k, I was shifting at 11k.

The only extra sprockets I had with me was a 17t and 41t.  I stuck the 17t on Sat night and on Sunday was able to pull 5th to redline and crossed the traps in 6th but not deep into 6th.  As crazy as this sounds next trip out I'm going 17/45 and lose some gut so maybe I can tuck a little tighter. :hys:

Best 1/2 mile 160.x mph
Best mile 167.x mph

It's like trying to push a bill board through the wind.  :)

If you are running basically a stock motor, then your shift points are too late.  With stock cams/head, your bike will accelerate faster shifting at 10-10.2K.  Then you really need to think small with the tuck:  arms, legs, and feet into the bike.

When he short shifted then he couldn't pull the next gear. Remember true RPM lag's the Tach so his indicated 11K was closer to 10.2K ~10.3K RPM's

Thats a pretty good mph with your hp on pump gas.  Kenny's  BKing Jeremy rides made 211 on MRX01 and runs 8.79 @ 153 on motor. Cyc head work, two intake cams and raised the compression, HTP tuned. They are hard to move air with.

Yeah belive me I've read his thread repeatedly over the last year, tried to contact him on the other board but got no response.  It's here if anyone is intrested. http://www.hayabusa.org/forum/random-thoughts/105973-my-best-results-texas-mile-today-pics-3.html

Best mile with the 18/43 was in the 164 range.  I picked up 3mph and was able to use 6th just by droping 1 tooth in the front.

I know he gained 10mph just by trying different things with his tuck.  Getting the air around him was a big difference and then later he took off the fake side air ducts..  Once the wind picked up on Sunday that got him in the 180's but I know he was 170+ even without the help of the wind. ;)

I know my tuck needs work but i had no idea how much untill we got home and my son showed me a lot of the pictures he had been taking.  I looked like a frog man! :hys:

I pulled a lot of things off, bar ends, belly pan, sliders and my side air ducts.  My ducts ARE functional thanks to some molded fiberglass rams.  I lost 3mph without them, put them back on and got it right back.

Airbox inlet

If I knew that Shane had a tail wind I had forgotten that.  I was also getting some wheel spin on the big end even after dropping the air pressure.

 Are you kidding me?  I appreciate your input and offer to turn wrenches.  You LSR guys are a different breed.  I had several veterans of the sport offer valuble insight to this first time mile runner.  Most of my experience comes from years ago 1/4 drags with cars, everyone held their cards pretty close to their vest in the pits cause you might be lined up against the guy you just gave that good advice to.

Tom it was good to meet you and I understand that your mind was else where that's understandable, enjoyed visiting with you just the same. :thumb:
