rust removal experiments = success
« on: March 14, 2012, 02:01:14 AM »
The header pipes were rusted to hell & gone after running(if you can call it that) at Bonneville last Sept.
They were so bad i almost threw em in the trash, but thought WTH, let's do a lil experiment.

So i tried:
CLR = fail,
locktite naval jelly = fail.

then i bought some of this stuff:
uosales@ultraone.com

unfortunately i didn't take before & after pix of the headers, but not a spec of rust remained after treatment.
So i did one end of a meg internal which had been sitting in the garage for 2 years.

Stuff is amazing, not an acid, just takes a few days with part immersed.

yup, it's one of those products that does exactly what it says it's gonna.

To do the headers, i bought the $100 gallon jug of concentrate, mixed it with 4 gallons of tap water in an ice chest/cooler.  The 5 gal mix was just enough to cover 4 header pipes & collector.

I let em soak for a week and rust was gone.

There is a black residue (reduced iron?) that cleans off real easy with a brush &  liquid you spray on (came with the gallon jug)

Cool stuff.

I watched some of the slideshow and was impressed. I like how they sprayed down that car without taking anything off and just used a tarp to catch and recycle the cleaner.

Seems like it pretty safe to other materials too, some of the parts in the slideshow all the rust came off but the stickers and rubber parts stayed mint.

one thing they tell you to be careful of: after treatment you rinse it completely, get all that shit off, it is bare metal and VERY prone to rust immediately.
So gotta protect the surface somehow.

I drenched the headers in WD-40 after treatment bc i didn't have any high temp paint avail.
For sure should have painted them.

Very cool Karl. But do you really have a mild steel header? I didn't think they existed anymore.

Dean,
Yup,  the Murray header and collector are mild steel and were rusted completely inside and where they fit into the collector. The meg is aluminum.

The jet hot coating mitigated the rust but obviously they don't coat the mating surfaces.

Although cosmetic, the rust was over much of the coating.

Wonder stuff took ALL of it off. :thumb:

Bob, i hear you about everything rusting up in Houston, in fact I just ordered 50 gallons.
I'm gonna fill the tub and soak in it, maybe my rusty parts will be good as new.
