i am 6'3", 230# and tried the stock shield 2 times in back to back testing against higher alternatives (ZG DB, and another brand).  The oem shield is not high enough for me to get my helmet out of the wind at 210mph +/-.  as a result i got wind buffeting and very blurry vision even with the chin of the helmet hard on the tank.  blurred vision at 200mph in a heavy crosswind is NOT  safe...

Jeff, i have no words of wisdom, but i have bailed big time on a pass only 2 times.

once when a strong gusting cross wind made me cross the entire track, from far left to the marbles on right side in about a sec.

once when my vision just stopped working (oem shield)at about 3/4 mile, again with a gusting cross wind.

both events skeered these ole bones!

CM1, if i were you i'd be mostly concerned with getting comfortable in a tuck, getting your launching, shifting, shutdown routine down pat, knowing exactly where you are on the track, and even monitor yr gauges a bit.
all that stuff seems trivial, but smoothly doing it all at once takes practice.

just my opinion...

Monitor your guages, like look at your gear indicator and be sure you are in 6th gear when your shiftlight comes on.

This has been a heated debate for years on here.
If you are a 110lb test jockey in Japan, I would say stick with the stock screen.
Being you live in the USA and aren't afraid of a double cheeseburger and fries, there is no doubt that the ZG double bubble will help you.
I know this............ :hys:

Excellent comments Karl, and glad your feeling better.
Chopperman, You didn't mention if your preparing for your first land speed event. When ya first show up you will need to complete several lower speed license runs to determine your ability before they allow you to run as god intended. Frustrating as that is, it plays into fvance comment about "Monitor your gauges, like look at your gear indicator and"... I mention this because at your first event (Like Mojave) you may not receive the approval to attempt 200! This is for your benefit. Only after many "laps" will everything slow down, field of vision becomes wider, and ya start noticing your gauges, position on the track and how correct your suspension setup is.
My prediction is helmet buffeting around 200mph with a stock shield will be surprising. The double bubble shield will reduce buffeting allowing you to see... an option would be a 4" extended stockish shield.
The double bubble may help you go faster, but the real advantage is reduced buffeting, increased safety, increased comfort. Yea they work.
JMHO, YMMV

This will be my first lsr event (Ohio). Thanks for the great reply.  I am grateful to everyone that has provided their comments gained from their experiences.  I'm not expecting to pull the trigger and go over 200, just hoping to get there without a lengthily trial and error period.  Thats where the comments from you guys helps tremendously.  Been riding for 45 years, just no sanctioned events like lsr.  Lookin forward to it.

Thanks again

When I started my Bonneville saga, five years ago, I thought the licensing deal was bs. After I finished licensing I was really glad that I had to do it. My first shot at pavement LSR was at Goliad. First run I did a giant wheelie, second run was 202+. Honestly I was scared shitless. I had never, in my 40 years of riding, done a standing start drag race. And I was really worried about getting stopped. Looking back I would have really benifited from some slower licensing runs. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. :bike:

Chopper, I'll give ya one of my top secret lessons learned, but you owe me a beer. And don't tell anybody.

Toss the hump, and slide your ass way back, you'll gain 4 - 5 mph.

With what power does that work ? Not to get wheelies easier when weight is further back.

Hmmm, As a point of reference I was making 182 hp last year, normally aspirated. Wouldn't expect to have a wheelie problem in the higher gears.
Sure in the first couple gears it wants to wheelie, but the tall gearing really has reduced the aggression through 1 - 3 gears.
Not sure why one would want to slide back in the low gears.
Just my humble opinion, and your riding style may differ. In the upper gears... when I slide back. I grip the bike as best as I can with my feet and grip the bike hard with my knees. Actually I'm stretching back, making my back flat. My ass is not resting on anything, but rather an inch or so? off the seat, therefore with my weight on the pegs and handlebars, as neutral, and low, and on center as possible.
